The pivotal role of the food service industry in alleviating urban segregation and boosting city vitality.

Urban segregation challenges the sustainable and inclusive development of cities, yet little is known about how to address it effectively. This study examines how restaurants in Chengdu, China, a city renowned for its vibrant food culture, shape social interactions in daily life, aiming to uncover ways to promote greater social mixing. Drawing on 1.52 million cell phone records and information on 5,347 restaurants from Dianping.com, social isolation indices were measured across residential contexts and dining-out activities. The results show that the social isolation index during dining-out ac

Areas of Convergence and Divergence in Adolescent Social Isolation and Binge Drinking: A Review.

Adolescence is a critical developmental period characterized by enhanced social interactions, ongoing development of the frontal cortex and maturation of synaptic connections throughout the brain. Adolescents spend more time interacting with peers than any other age group and display heightened reward sensitivity, impulsivity and diminished inhibitory self-control, which contribute to increased risky behaviors, including the initiation and progression of alcohol use. Compared to adults, adolescents are less susceptible to the negative effects of ethanol, but are more susceptible to the negativ

Assessing Unmet Social Needs in Multiple Sclerosis Care in Australia: A Qualitative Assessment of Feasibility, Barriers and Enablers.

BACKGROUND: Unmet social needs (including housing, transport and social inclusion) contribute substantially to health outcomes, especially for people with long-term health conditions such as multiple sclerosis (MS). Whether assessment of unmet social needs occurs in MS clinical care is unclear. This study aims to (1) understand current practices, (2) identify barriers and enablers to social needs assessments in MS care, and (3) explore the feasibility of social needs screening tools. METHODS: This qualitative descriptive study comprised focus groups and interviews with clinicians, carers and …

Social Circus for People with Disabilities: A Video Analysis through the Lens of the MOHO.

BACKGROUND: Social circus is a branch of circus that primarily focuses on personal and community development, rather than an elite level of professional artistry required of traditional circus. Social circus engages participants in circus activities such as juggling and acrobatics with therapeutic aims such as building confidence or developing life skills. While there is a growing body of literature around social circus, there is currently limited literature exploring the interface between social circus and occupational therapy theory. OBJECTIVE: This study is aimed at examining existing exam

Sequential Social Exclusion in a Novel Cyberball Paradigm Leads to Reduced Behavioral Repair and Plasma Oxytocin in Borderline Personality Disorder.

Patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD) show interpersonal deficits, and altered emotional and oxytocin (OT) responses to social exclusion (Cyberball). In order to extend previous findings, this study applies a novel Cyberball variant. Nineteen BPD patients and 56 healthy controls (HC) played Cyberball for 2 minutes of inclusion, 5 minutes of partial exclusion by one of two co-players, and 2 minutes total exclusion by both. Plasma OT levels at baseline and after 7, 9, 15, and 40 minutes were measured with radioimmunoassay. BPD patients showed a greater aversive reaction and a trend

Ten-Year Outcomes of First-Episode Psychoses in the MRC ÆSOP-10 Study.

It has long been held that schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders have a predominately poor course and outcome. We have synthesized information on mortality, clinical and social outcomes from the ÆSOP-10 multicenter study, a 10-year follow-up of a large epidemiologically characterized cohort of 557 people with first-episode psychosis. Symptomatic remission and recovery were more common than previously believed. Distinguishing between symptom and social recovery is important given the disparity between these; even when symptomatic recovery occurs social inclusion may remain elusive. Multip…

Exploring sign language, social connectedness, and life satisfaction of deaf adults.

This study explored how sign language use and social connectedness influenced the life satisfaction of twelve British Deaf community members (n = 12, m = 2, f = 10, aged 23-79). During in-person and remote interviews, participants compared experiences of sign language use and social connectedness with experiences of spoken language and exclusion. Reflexive thematic analysis generated two main themes. (1) Gaining Deafness: which explored how sign language use and social connectedness created positive perceptions of deafness, enabling authenticity and agency. (2) Empowering Deaf pride: which exa

Transgender Identity and Social Acceptance: Psychosocial Insights from a Phenomenological Study.

Transgender individuals experience complex emotional, social, and psychological challenges shaped by systemic discrimination, social exclusion, and varying degrees of familial acceptance in Türkiye. Despite growing global research, studies addressing these lived experiences within Türkiye's sociocultural context remain limited. This study explored how transgender individuals navigate family relationships, social environments, and available support systems, as well as how they construct resilience and imagine possibilities for social change. Using a descriptive phenomenological approach, semi-s

The medial prefrontal cortex as a proposed regulatory structure in the relationship between anxiety and perceived social support: a review.

Perceived social support is recognized as a critical protective factor against the development of mental health disorders. Anxiety disorders are the most common group of mental health disorders and have a substantial impact on individuals' well-being. Despite extensive research on anxiety and perceived social support, a significant gap exists in our understanding of the neural mechanisms linking these two phenomena. While several brain regions, including the amygdala, hippocampus, and insula, have been implicated in anxiety regulation and social support processing, the medial prefrontal cortex

Differences in oxytocin and vasopressin levels in individuals suffering from the autism spectrum disorders vs general population - a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by deficits in social interactions, communication, and the presence of stereotyped, repetitive behaviors. Oxytocin (OXT) and arginine-vasopressin are neuropeptides produced in hypothalamus and they are related to processing emotions and social behavior. In the light of a growing number of scientific reports related to this issue, the two neurohormones started to be linked with the basis of neurodevelopmental disorders, including the ASD. The aim of this study was a systematic review of previous studies

Status report -- Identifying equity-focussed interventions to promote healthy weights.

INTRODUCTION: We developed screening criteria to identify population health interventions with an equity focus for inclusion on the Public Health Agency of Canada's Canadian Best Practices Portal. We applied them to the area of "healthy weights," specifically, obesity prevention. METHODS: We conducted a review of the literature and obtained input from expert external reviewers on changes to midstream environments. Interventions had to identify outcomes for groups with an underlying social disadvantage. We included papers with a focus on equity and vulnerable populations, intervention and/or e

Development and validation of a social vulnerability index for use in Canadians living with multiple sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Social factors influence the health outcomes of individuals with multiple sclerosis (MS). Social vulnerability indices (SVIs) can identify populations at risk of poor outcomes and inform targeted interventions, but no SVI has been developed for people with MS to date. OBJECTIVE: We developed a SVI, which aggregates several measures of social vulnerability into a composite, and assessed its performance. METHODS: We conducted a national, cross-sectional survey of people with MS in Canada from June 2025-March 2026. We selected social vulnerability factors across demographic, socioec
