Belonging in Reduced-Size Classrooms: Student Outcomes Among Chinese Upper Secondary Students With Intellectual and Other Documented Disabilities.

BACKGROUND: International debates on inclusive education often position reduced-size or specialized classrooms as either supportive provisio … pport (n = 106). Structural equation modelling estimated direct and indirect associations involving social integration, teacher support and academic self-efficacy, with prior special education experience treated as a key covariate. Semistructured interviews with nine RSC students explained and contextualized the quantitative patterns. RESULTS: After adjustment, RSC …

Body language signals for rodent social communication.

Integration of social cues to initiate adaptive emotional and behavioral responses is a fundamental aspect of animal and human behavior. In humans, social communication includes prominent nonverbal components, such as social touch, gestures and facial expressions. Comparative studies investigating the neural basis of social communication in rodents has historically been centered on olfactory signals and vocalizations, with relatively less focus on non-verbal social cues. Here, we outline two exciting research directions: First, we will review recent observations pointing to a role of social fa

From coordination to normativity in social tinkering.

The social tinkering model convincingly explains how local coordination processes give rise to shared practices and conventions. However, it remains unclear whether such mechanisms suffice to account for normativity in the strong sense. Using contemporary language models as a comparative case, coordination alone does not appear sufficient to generate normatively binding standards. The transition to normativity likely requires additional conditions - such as public accountability, sanctions, and stable social roles - that merit more explicit integration within the framework.

Reducing Gaps, Improving Outcomes: Sunnybrook-to-Home Program.

Launched in June 2024, the Sunnybrook-to-Home (SB2H) program was designed to support older adults' transitions from hospital to home through the integration of hospital, home care and community services. Between June 2024 and December 2025, 593 unique patients were enrolled, with approximately 33% referred from the emergency department. Patients who enrolled in SB2H experienced faster access to home care (average 1 day vs. a Toronto Central regional average of 5 days) and shorter alternate level of care stays (3.7 days compared with 7.5 days among non-SB2H patients). Integration of community s

Atypical development of white matter structural networks in children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorder: a graph theory study.

BACKGROUND: Atypical brain connectivity is considered a key neurobiological feature underlying the heterogeneous clinical manifestations of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). However, findings on brain networks in ASD are inconsistent, likely owing to the effects of developmental factors. In addition, how large-scale brain networks in ASD differ across developmental stages remains unclear. We aimed to elucidate the atypical developmental patterns of white matter (WM) structural networks in children and adolescents with ASD using a graph-theoretical approach. METHODS: Diffusion/T1-weighted brain

Birth rates and migration: an AI and One Health approach within the Italian National Health System.

This study examines the future stability of Italy's health and social systems in the context of demographic decline. The Italian healthcare system, grounded in a universalistic and public model, founded on the principle of equity, is undergoing a phase of instability. The COVID-19 pandemic represented a critical rupture, exposing systemic weaknesses, territorial disparities, infrastructural inadequacies, the rigidity of financing mechanisms and the lack of reform regarding citizenship rights for foreign residents. An inductive, interpretive approach was adopted, starting with data analysis fro

The Social Amplification of Risk Framework Revisited: Report From an Exst Workshop on Opportunities for Conceptual Advancement.

The Social Amplification of Risk Framework (SARF) is intended to facilitate the integration of studies about risk across natural, biological, physical, and social sciences. Researchers employing SARF have advanced understandings of the complex dynamic responses of social systems to hazards, the ways that risks are experienced and perceived, and the ways that consequences can ripple across social and governance systems, geographies, and economic sectors. In seeking to build on a Special Issue of Risk Analysis on SARF organized and edited by Kasperson, et al. (2022), an international interdiscip

"The start of something that I hope could be greater": Health information technology tools for social care.

Federal policies and professional guidelines in the United States increasingly encourage and incentivize health systems to collect and meaningfully respond to patients' social risks. In response, many health systems employ health information technology to implement, standardize, and scale these social care activities. We created and evaluated electronic health record tools to support the collection and documentation of social risk information, and the integration of this information into clinical decision-making; the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine labels these activi

Enhancing Primary Care Experiences for Homeless Patients with Serious Mental Illness: Results from a National Survey.

OBJECTIVES: Patients experiencing homelessness (PEH) with serious mental illness (SMI) have poor satisfaction with primary care. We assessed if primary care teams tailored for homeless patients (Homeless-Patient Aligned Care Teams (H-PACTs)) provide this population with superior experiences than mainstream primary care and explored whether integrated behavioral health and social services were associated with favorable experiences. METHODS: We surveyed VA PEH with SMI (n = 1095) to capture the valence of their primary care experiences in 4 domains (Access/Coordination, Patient-Clinician Relati

The Impact of Mild Traumatic Brain Injury Sustained with Blast or Nonblast Mechanism During Combat or Noncombat Deployment on Community Reintegration.

Community reintegration serves an integral role to enhance veterans' quality of life as they transition to civilian life. Unsuccessful reintegration after military separation may contribute to the relative increase in adverse outcomes such as homelessness and suicide in this population. Mild traumatic brain injury (TBI) has been linked to poor mental health, which, in turn, may compromise community reintegration; however, little is known about how the characteristics of mild TBI may impact community reintegration either directly or indirectly. The objectives of this study are to: (1) evaluate

Social and Community Participation in Adults With Chronic Spinal Cord Injury: A Scoping Review.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) leads to disability that limits social and community participation. However, the barriers to and enablers of post-injury reintegration remain unclear. This scoping review aimed to summarise the factors that facilitate and hinder social and community participation for adults with a chronic SCI. Quantitative and qualitative studies investigating barriers to and/or facilitators of social and/or community participation in adults with a chronic SCI were included. Grey literature and six academic databases were searched in March 2025. Methodological quality was assessed usin

The social life of Pavlovian learning.

This article proposes that Pavlovian learning contributes to the formation and stabilization of social beliefs and collective commitments. We argue that associative processes linking reward and threat to social cues shape how beliefs acquire affective salience, motivational persistence, and resistance to revision. Within this framework, social cognition is conceptualized not as a purely inferential process, but as one constrained by affective learning mechanisms operating across distributed neural systems involved in reward, threat processing, and contextual regulation. Appetitive learning may

Gender, social engagement, and limitations in late life.

This study examines gender differences in the pathways among social engagement, physical limitations and cognitive limitations among U.S. older adults. It improves upon previous literature by longitudinally testing both social benefit and selection hypotheses, examining gender differences in these relationships, gaining modeling advantages through structural equation modeling, and by incorporating the frequency of participation in social activities as an important source of social integration that may influence health among older adults. This study uses U.S. panel data of adults aged 60 and ol…

Treatment of co-occurring psychotic and substance use disorders.

People with psychotic disorders and other serious mental illnesses, such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and severe major depression, have high rates of co-occurring substance use disorder, which can wreak havoc in their lives. In this article the authors describe strategies for assessing substance use problems in people with serious mental illnesses, and then address the treatment of these co-occurring disorders. The authors review principles of treatment of co-occurring disorders, including integration of mental health and substance abuse services, adopting a low-stress and harm-reductio
