Exploring Social Interactions and Engagement in Children With Autism During Inclusive and Adapted Tennis Sessions: A Pilot Study.

This pilot study explored patterns of social interaction and engagement in children with autism participating in adapted and inclusive tennis sessions alongside their nonautistic peers. Sixteen children with autism were observed through video analysis of 111 sessions led by coaches trained in autism. Engagement and social interaction were coded using a structured observational system to describe variability across participants and game contexts. Overall, children with autism tended to display predominantly positive interactions during the sessions. Although they interacted more frequently with…

Loneliness, positive social interactions, and diurnal cortisol among mid-to-later life adults in everyday life.

Loneliness, the subjective feeling of social isolation, is a major public health concern linked to poor health, including stress-related diseases such as cardiovascular disease. However, less is known about how loneliness relates to biological functioning in everyday life and whether age and social interactions shape these associations. We investigated whether loneliness self-reported in everyday life related to the dynamic range of diurnal cortisol (CDR) compared to other indicators of diurnal cortisol (including the cortisol awakening response [CAR], diurnal cortisol slope [DCS], and area un…

Shaping and reinforcing personal views of aging among older adults: the role of non-kin social interactions.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Older adults' personal views of aging (VoA) can shape health and well-being outcomes. This study explores how non-kin social interactions within a continuing care retirement community (CCRC) influence the development and reinforcement of personal VoA before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: This qualitative study was nested within an ongoing ethnographic project in a Midwestern U.S. CCRC. Data included 22 resident interviews contextualized by 2 months of ethnographic fieldwork and participant observation. Interviews and field notes were …

Social interactions in isolated, confined, and extreme environments: A study of Antarctic winter teams using wearable sensors.

Long-duration space missions expose crews to extreme psychological and social stressors due to prolonged isolation and confinement. To exami … ith individual performance, suggesting that more frequent contact did not equate to social support. Social interactions became increasingly clustered within national groups, highlighting the risk of social fragmentation and crew polarization. The use of wearable sensors proved feasible for long-term use in extreme environments. These findings underscore the importan …

The network and interactive pattern of social adjustment and psychological symptoms in patients with spinal cord injury: a network analysis.

BACKGROUND: The network approach offers a novel framework for conceptualizing depression, anxiety and social adaptability as causal systems, which helps in understanding what may be relevant targets for treatment. OBJECTIVE: To determine the network structure and interaction patterns of social adjustment and psychological symptoms in patients with spinal cord injury (SCI). METHODS: A cross-sectional patient-reported study was conducted using an online questionnaire survey disseminated from February to April 2023. The survey included the Medical Coping Modality Questionnaire (MCMQ), Social Su

Simultaneous recording of ultrasonic vocalizations and sniffing from socially interacting individual rats using a miniature microphone.

Vocalizations are pivotal in mammalian communication, especially in humans. Rodents accordingly rely on ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs) that reflect their internal state as a primary channel during social interactions. However, attributing vocalizations to specific individuals remains challenging, impeding internal state assessment. Rats emit 50-kHz USVs to indicate positive states and intensify sniffing during alertness and social interactions. Here, we present a method involving a miniature microphone attached to the rat nasal cavity that allows to capture both male and female individual rat…

Well-being in social interactions: Examining personality-situation dynamics in face-to-face and computer-mediated communication.

Decades of research show that people's social lives are linked to their well-being. Yet, research on the relationship between social interactions and well-being has been largely inconclusive with regard to the effects of person-situation interactions, such as the interplay between contextual factors (e.g., interactions occurring in physical vs. digital contexts, different interaction partners) and dispositional tendencies (e.g., Big Five personality traits). Here, we report on exploratory and confirmatory findings from three large studies of college students (Study 1: N = 1,360; Study 2: N = 8…

Investigation of Relaxin-3 Serum Levels in terms of Social Interaction, Communication, and Appetite as a Biomarker in Children with Autism.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the possible relationship between relaxin-3 and autism spectrum disorder (ASD). METHODS: Serum relaxin-3 was measured in 80 children (50 children diagnosed with ASD and 30 controls). Symptom severity in the ASD group was evaluated by the Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS). Behavioral and nutritional problems in the groups were evaluated using the Abnormal Behavior Checklist (ABC) and the Children's Eating Behavior Questionnaire (CEBQ). RESULTS: Our findings showed that serum relaxin-3 levels were higher in children with ASD than in the controls. The listening resp

[Childhood experiences of seeking parental support, social interactions, and interpersonal relationships in adulthood: a cross-sectional study].

Objectives Some young adults often tend to perceive interpersonal relationships and social interactions as stressful, and as such, avoid them. Seeking help from parents and interactions with neighbors during childhood are known to be important in forming positive impressions of people, thereby influencing help-seeking behavior in adulthood. However, it remains unclear how these experiences are related and how they influence interpersonal relationships in adulthood. This study aimed to investigate whether childhood experience(s) of social interactions in the community has any modifying effect o…

Interactions between the Physical and Social Environments with Adverse Pregnancy Events Related to Placental Disorders-A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Due to different social and physical environments across Africa, understanding how these environments differ in interacting with placental disorders will play an important role in developing effective interventions. METHODS: A scoping review was conducted, to identify current knowledge on interactions between the physical and social environment and the incidence of placental disease in Africa. RESULTS: Heavy metals were said to be harmful when environmental concentrations are beyond critical limits. Education level, maternal age, attendance of antenatal care and parity were the m

Evaluating the Role of Drone-Produced Chemical Signals in Mediating Social Interactions in Honey Bees (Apis mellifera).

Pheromones play a critical role in shaping societies of social insects, including honey bees, Apis mellifera. While diverse functions have been ascribed to queen- and worker-produced compounds, few studies have explored the identity and function of male-produced (drone) compounds. However, several lines of evidence suggest that drones engage in a variety of social interactions inside and outside of the colony. Here we elucidate the chemical composition of extracts of the drone mandibular gland, and test the hypothesis that compounds produced in these glands, or a synthetic blend consisting of …

The interaction of distress tolerance and intolerance of uncertainty in the prediction of symptom reduction across CBT for social anxiety disorder.

Distress tolerance (DT) and intolerance of uncertainty (IU) have been identified as transdiagnostic processes that predict symptom severity across a range of distinct anxiety disorders. However, the joint effect of these two variables on therapeutic outcome has not yet been examined. It is possible that DT and IU may both impact on treatment response to cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) in clients with anxiety, as clients with weak DT and strong IU may be less likely to engage in exposure and cognitive restructuring tasks across treatment due to their associated distress. The purpose of this

Electrocommunication behaviour during social interactions in two species of pulse-type weakly electric fishes (Mormyridae).

This study compares electrocommunication behaviour in groups of freely swimming weakly electric fishes of two species, Marcusenius altisambesi and Mormyrus rume. Animals emitted variable temporal sequences of stereotyped electric organ discharges (EOD) that served as communication signals. While the waveform of individual signals remained constant, the inter-discharge interval (IDI) patterns conveyed situation-specific information. Both species showed different types of group behaviour, e.g. they engaged in collective (group) foraging. The results show that in each species, during different be

Trait hostility and ambulatory blood pressure among traffic enforcement agents: the effects of stressful social interactions.

This study investigated the hypothesis that trait hostility is associated with heightened cardiovascular reactivity to potentially stressful social interactions but not to nonsocial activities in the workplace. Participants were 73 (39 women) New York City traffic enforcement agents (TEAs) who patrol the streets and issue summonses for vehicular and parking violations. During their patrols, TEAs face potentially stressful interactions when they encounter motorists and pedestrians who may be angry about receiving summonses. Mood and ambulatory blood pressure were initially measured when TEAs we…
