Feasibility and preliminary effects of outdoor versus indoor cognitive-motor therapy in women with Alzheimer's disease: A randomized single-blind pilot study.

Alzheimer's disease is associated with progressive cognitive, functional and social decline. Non-pharmacological interventions that combine cognitive and motor stimulation are increasingly used in long-term care, but less is known about the feasibility and preliminary effects of delivering such programmes in outdoor rather than indoor settings. This exploratory randomized single-blind pilot study compared outdoor and indoor cognitive-motor therapy in institutionalized older women with Alzheimer's disease, focusing on global cognitive performance, selected functional outcomes, attendance and pr

Loneliness and social isolation in people with HIV aged ≥50 years. The No One Alone (NOA)-GeSIDA study conducted by the GeSIDA 12021 study group.

INTRODUCTION: There is a growing number of people with HIV who are aged 50 years or older, and the prevalence of loneliness and social isolation remains unknown. METHODS: A multicentre study was conducted across 22 GeSIDA centres. A survey was carried out to assess loneliness [UCLA 3-item Loneliness Scale-3 (UCLA-3)] and social isolation [Lubben Social Network Scale-Revised (LSNS-R)], along with sociodemographic aspects, HIV-related factors, comorbidities, tobacco, alcohol and drug consumption, quality of life, anxiety and depression, and stigma. The prevalence of loneliness (UCLA-3 ≥ 6) and

Effects of a Group Protocol on Physical Activity and Associated Changes in Mood and Health Locus of Control in Adults with Parkinson Disease and Reduced Mobility.

BACKGROUND: Parkinson disease (PD) is a degenerative nervous disorder that affects motor functioning. Although physical activity is beneficial, it often is reduced, and psychosocial issues persist such as low mood and perceptions of loss of control over health. OBJECTIVE: To determine the extent to which a community-based physical activity/self-regulatory skills intervention affects overall physical activity and changes in psychosocial factors in adults with PD and in adults with reduced mobility without PD. METHODS: Existing participants (N = 45, mean age = 71 years) of community-based PD g

Racial and educational disparities in mobility limitation among older women: what is the role of modifiable risk factors?

OBJECTIVES: This research explores whether modifiable risk factors (MRFs) are potential mediators and/or moderators of racial/ethnic and educational mobility limitation disparities among older women. METHOD: Utilizing Waves 2-9 (1994-2008) of the Health and Retirement Study (HRS), discrete-time event history models with multiple competing events were estimated using multinomial logistic regression. RESULTS: Black women were more likely to develop mobility limitation relative to White women. This disparity was partially mediated by body mass index. Educational disparities were also observed,

Social capital in an outdoor recreation context.

This study examined social capital development in three all-terrain vehicles (ATV) clubs in Maine using an adapted version of Lin's (2001) social capital theory model. The structural components of social capital identified included collective assets and individual assets in the form of normative behavior and trust relationships. Also identified were counter-norms for individual ATV riders identified as having divergent norms from club members. The second component of social capital is access to and mobilization of network contacts and resources. Access networks in the context of the ATV clubs

GEARing smart environments for pediatric motor rehabilitation.

BACKGROUND: There is a lack of early (infant) mobility rehabilitation approaches that incorporate natural and complex environments and have the potential to concurrently advance motor, cognitive, and social development. The Grounded Early Adaptive Rehabilitation (GEAR) system is a pediatric learning environment designed to provide motor interventions that are grounded in social theory and can be applied in early life. Within a perceptively complex and behaviorally natural setting, GEAR utilizes novel body-weight support technology and socially-assistive robots to both ease and encourage mobili

A Longitudinal Study of Cognitive and Instrumental Activities of Daily Living Disablement Among the Oldest Mexican Americans.

ObjectivesMexican Americans live longer on average than other ethnic groups, but often with protracted cognitive and physical disability. Little is known, however, about the role of cognitive decline for transitions in instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) disability and tertiary outcomes of the IADL disablement for the oldest old (after 80 years old). Methods We employ the Hispanic Established Populations for the Epidemiologic Study of the Elderly (2010-2011, 2012-2013, and 2016, N = 1,078) to investigate the longitudinal patterns of IADL decline using latent transition analysis. Walk the Talk: Characterizing Mobility in Older Adults Living on Low Income.

We provide an in-depth description of the mobility (capacity and enacted function, i.e., physical activity and travel behaviour) of community-dwelling older adults of low socioeconomic status. Participants [n = 161, mean age (range) = 74 (65-96) years] completed interviewer-administered questionnaires and objective measures of mobility. Our findings did not generally indicate that older adults of low socioeconomic status have a reduced capacity to be mobile. Participants presented with positive profiles across physical, psychosocial, and social environment domains that influence the capacity t

Theories, models and frameworks to understand barriers to the provision of mobility-assistive technologies: a scoping review.

OBJECTIVES: There is strong evidence that mobility-assistive technologies improve occupational performance, social participation, educational and employment access and overall quality of life in people with disabilities. However, people with disabilities still face barriers in accessing mobility products and related services. This review aims to summarise and synthesise: (1) theories, models and frameworks that have been used to understand mobility-assistive technology access, (2) determinants of access and (3) gaps in knowledge. DESIGN: A scoping review using the five-step framework by Arkse

Perspectives of patients and clinicians on older patient mobility on acute medical wards: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Low mobility during an acute care medical hospitalization is frequent and associated with adverse outcomes, particularly among older patients. Better understanding barriers and facilitators to improve mobility during hospitalization could help develop effective interventions. The goal of this study was to assess barriers and facilitators to older medical patients' hospital mobility, from the point of view of patients and clinicians, to develop a framework applicable in clinical practice. METHODS: We conducted a qualitative study in one university and two non-university hospitals o

Assessing public awareness and use of medical abortion via mobile phone survey in India.

OBJECTIVE: We assess the feasibility of measuring awareness and use of medical abortion via a mobile phone survey on social attitudes in India. STUDY DESIGN: In 2018, we conducted a mobile phone survey with 3455 married men and women in Bihar and Maharashtra, two of India's most populous states. As part of a broader survey on social inequality, welfare programs, and health, we asked respondents about their awareness of medical abortion and whether they (or their wife) had ever had a medical abortion. RESULTS: Among men and women in Bihar and Maharashtra, one fifth to one third of respondents

Human mobility and malaria risk in peri-urban and rural communities in the Peruvian Amazon.

BACKGROUND: While the global burden of malaria cases has decreased over the last two decades, the disease remains a major international threat, even on the rise in many regions. More than 85% of Peruvian malaria cases are in the Amazonian region of Loreto. Internal mobility primarily related to occupation is thought to be primarily responsible for maintaining endemicity and introducing and reintroducing malaria parasites into areas of anophelism, a challenge for malaria eradication. This study focuses on identifying the sources of malaria transmission and patterns of human mobility in order to

How does playing adapted sports affect quality of life of people with mobility limitations? Results from a mixed-method sequential explanatory study.

BACKGROUND: Occupations, including physical activity, are a strong determinant of health. However, mobility limitations can restrict opportunities to perform these occupations, which may affect quality of life. Some people will turn to adapted sports to meet their need to be involved in occupations. Little is known, however, about how participation in adapted sports affects the quality of life of people with mobility limitations. This study thus aimed to explore the influence of adapted sports on quality of life in adult wheelchair users. METHODS: A mixed-method sequential explanatory design

Geographic Mobility, Place Attachment, and the Changing Geography of Sex among African American and Latinx MSM Who Use Substances in Los Angeles.

The places that people go and interact with others, along with the characteristics of those places, determine degrees of sexual health risk and concomitant prevention opportunities for gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM). The objective of this paper is to use syndemic theory to guide analyses of 20 in-depth interviews with African American and Hispanic/Latinx MSM living in Los Angeles. We describe the places in which African American and Latinx MSM interviewees live and socialize, and how these places influence sexual behavior, drug use, and access to health care. We find

Social isolation, loneliness, disability progression, and mortality among older adults with cardiac disease: a longitudinal NHATS study.

BACKGROUND: Cardiac disease is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality among older adults, yet the psychosocial pathways through which it accelerates functional decline remain poorly characterized. Social isolation and loneliness are plausible mediators, but their longitudinal roles in the cardiac disease-disability-mortality cascade have not been examined in an integrated framework. METHODS: We analyzed 5,654 US Medicare beneficiaries aged ≥65 from the National Health and Aging Trends Study (NHATS) followed across Rounds 7-14 (2017-2024). Cardiac disease was ascertained at baseline via
