Abuse, Social Support, and Depression Among HIV-Positive Heterosexual, Bisexual, and Lesbian Women.

SUMMARY A nonprobability sample of HIV-positive mostly African American and Puerto Rican women in New York City were surveyed regarding abusive experiences, social support, and depressive symptoms. Seventy-five percent reported experiencing physical or sexual abuse at some point in their lives. Multiple regression analyses controlling for relevant sociodemographic variables indicated that child physical and sexual abuse and adult sexual abuse were significantly associated with depressive symptomatology (i.e., CES-D scores). HIV-related social support had a significant negative correlation with…

Social support protects against the negative effects of partner violence on mental health.

OBJECTIVES: Social support for abused women may reduce the impact of abuse on mental health, yet few studies have addressed this issue. We wish to determine associations between intimate partner violence (IPV) and mental health outcomes and to assess the protective role of abuse disclosure and support on mental health among abused women. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted of 1152 women, ages 18-65, recruited from family practice clinics from 1997 through 1999. They were screened for IPV during a brief in-clinic interview, and physical and mental health status was assessed in a fo…

Life events, social support and marital relationships in the outcome of severe depression.

The effects of life events, social support and marital relationships on outcome were examined in a predominantly recurrent in-patient sample of depressives studied longitudinally every 3 months to remission and up to 15 months thereafter. Outcomes examined were length of time to remission, presence of residual symptoms at remission, and subsequent relapse. There were few associations between these outcomes and the social variables. These findings add to other recent evidence that psychosocial factors are relatively unimportant in the subsequent course of severe and recurrent depressions, in co…

Childhood maltreatment, childhood social support, and child abuse potential in a Basque sample.

The present study obtained data on childhood physical and sexual abuse in a Basque sample in order to compare abuse rates with a similar study conducted in the United States. The study also examined the relationships between childhood physical and sexual abuse, childhood social support, and abuse potential in the Basque sample. Although the overall rates of physically abusive behaviors were similar in the Basque and US samples, the rates of physical abuse sequelae (bruises/welts, cuts/scratches, dislocations, burns, and/or bone fractures) were lower in the Basque sample. In addition, while the…

The Type A belief system: relationships to hostility, social support, and life stress.

Certain core beliefs may underlie the Type A behavior pattern, predisposing individuals to health problems and impaired interpersonal relationships. Previous studies have revealed that the Type A Cognitive Questionnaire (TACQ), a self-report measure reflecting these beliefs, is indeed related to emotional distress. The current study assessed the TACQ's relationship to aspects of the interpersonal environment, including perceived social support and stressful events. It also investigated the TACQ's relationship to subtypes of hostility (ie, cynicism and paranoid alienation). Subjects were 111 co…

Forms, interactions, and responses to social support: A qualitative study of support and adherence to photoprotection amongst patients with Xeroderma Pigmentosum.

This study explored the forms, processes, and responses associated with mobilization of informal support across three life contexts amongst patients with Xeroderma Pigmentosum (XP), a condition requiring rigorous photoprotection to reduce cancer risks. DESIGN: Qualitative interview study. METHODS: A total of 25 adults with XP participated in semi-structured interviews conducted face to face. An inductive thematic analysis was applied using a framew…

Environmental sensitivity and perceived social support in relation to adolescent eating disorder symptoms.

Eating disorders (EDs) frequently emerge during adolescence and are influenced by both individual and contextual factors. Among these, perceived social support has generally been associated with better outcomes, although findings remain inconsistent and may depend on both the source of support and individual differences in responsiveness to environmental inputs. The present study examined the role of Environmental Sensitivity (ES) and perceived social support in adolescent ED symptoms, focusing on different sources of support and their potential interaction within a vantage sensitivity framewo…

Social Support Buffers the Association Between Alcohol Use and Depression in Australian Men.

ISSUE ADDRESSED: Alcohol use and depression are known correlates of one another, especially in men, and are influenced by a range of demographic and psychosocial factors. This study examined the association between alcohol use and depressive symptoms in a large representative cohort of Australian men. We also tested whether this association differed by men's age, household income, social support, illicit drug use and help-seeking. METHODS: Using data from four waves (2013-2022) of the Longitudinal Study of Men's Health (Ten to Men; N = 13 776), linear regression models were estimated using ge…

Mothers' and fathers' social support trajectories and children's prosocial development: A dyadic perspective.

The current study examined mothers' and fathers' dyadic trajectories of perceived social support and their associations with children's prosociality. Data were drawn from 4,329 children (52% male, 48% female; 44% Black, 22% Hispanic, 17% White) in a prospective birth cohort study of low-income families. Repeated-measures latent class analysis identified three trajectories of social support at the level of the mother-father dyad from birth to age five: "High and Concordant" (64%), "Paternal-Advantaged, Declining Maternal" (20%), and "Maternal-Advantaged" (16%) social support. Child prosocial be…

Beyond listening: Social media as support, story, and influence in the endometriosis experience.

Social media has emerged as a valuable source of patient-generated data, offering insights into the lived experiences of individuals with endometriosis. While social listening research provides important perspectives on pain, treatment decisions, and community support, the interpretation of online narratives requires careful consideration. Experiences shared publicly may not fully represent the broader endometriosis community, as individuals with particularly distressing or positive experiences may be more likely to post, while others may remain silent because of privacy concerns, stigma, or p

Rumination and depressive symptoms among aging Veterans: The moderating role of social support.

INTRODUCTION: Rumination has been linked to worsened mental health outcomes, but its specific association with depressive symptoms among aging Veterans remains unclear. While social support may buffer adverse effects of rumination on well-being, it is not yet well understood which sources of social support are most effective. This study explored whether different sources of social support (spouse/partner, family, military friends, and civilian friends) moderate the association between rumination and depressive symptoms within an aging Veteran sample. METHODS: Seventy U.S. Veterans aged at lea…
