The accuracy of video imaging in orthognathic surgery.

Video imaging is an important emerging technology in planning orthognathic surgery and educating patients about the esthetic effects of treatment. The presurgical cephalograms of 56 patients, 41 with mandibular advancement alone and 15 with mandibular advancement plus genioplasty, were digitized, and the computer-generated soft tissue "line drawing" predictions were compared with the actual posttreatment cephalograms. Video images of the patients' presurgical lateral view were obtained, and two experienced clinicians compared the computer generated video image predictions with the actual postt

The biomechanical efficacy of a dressing with a soft cellulose fluff core in protecting prone surgical patients from chest injuries on the operating table.

Pressure ulcers are soft-tissue damage associated with tissue exposure to sustained deformations and stress concentrations. In patients who are proned for ventilation or surgery, such damage may occur in the superficial chest tissues that are compressed between the rib cage and the support surface. Prophylactic dressings have been previously proven as generally effective for pressure ulcer prevention. In this study, our goal was to develop a novel computational modelling framework to investigate the biomechanical efficacy of a dressing with a soft cellulose fluff core in protecting proned surg

Evaluation of the three-dimensional soft tissue changes after anterior segmental maxillary osteotomy.

The aim of this study was to assess the three-dimensional soft tissue changes following anterior segmental maxillary osteotomy, in terms of magnitude and direction in correlation to hard tissue changes, using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). The study included 6 patients (age range 17-35 years) suffering from dental maxillary protrusion that required surgical correction by anterior segmental maxillary osteotomy. For each patient, preoperative and postoperative CBCT, photographs, and orthodontic casts were taken before and 6 months after operation to analyse soft tissue changes, in terms o

Predictive Behavior of a Computational Foot/Ankle Model through Artificial Neural Networks.

Computational models are useful tools to study the biomechanics of human joints. Their predictive performance is heavily dependent on bony anatomy and soft tissue properties. Imaging data provides anatomical requirements while approximate tissue properties are implemented from literature data, when available. We sought to improve the predictive capability of a computational foot/ankle model by optimizing its ligament stiffness inputs using feedforward and radial basis function neural networks. While the former demonstrated better performance than the latter per mean square error, both networks

Hierarchical learning creates invariant schema within plastic neural networks.

Cognitive neural circuits must balance the plasticity needed for continual learning with the stability needed to preserve an underlying reasoning framework, called a schema. How circuit learning rules form and protect such schemata from being continually overwritten during learning remains unknown. On a visual boundary detection task, we show that a hierarchical learning algorithm creates an invariant schema circuit whose weights remain fixed following sparse initial training, with additional data serving to refine the upstream representation. In contrast, the end-to-end backpropagation algori

Hybrid quantum-classical neural networks for real-time fault detection in power systems.

As modern power systems continue to be integrated with renewable energy sources, the ability to detect faults in these systems quickly and accurately is becoming more sophisticated. A Hybrid Quantum Classical Neural Network (HQCNN) model is presented in this paper that addresses the real-time fault detection challenge in transmission systems. A classical feature extractor, in this case a 1D CNN, and a quantum circuit are combined by the model, which aids in the classification of faults. Evaluations were conducted on simulated IEEE 14 and 39-bus system and on approximately 800 real PMU fault ev

Optimizing deep CNN architecture via hybrid Harris Hawks arithmetic algorithm for EEG meditation classification.

Meditation is a widely recognized practice that enhances mental well-being and cognitive function. Despite advances in EEG meditation neuroscience, challenges persist in extracting robust and interpretable features from complex, non-stationary EEG signals. Existing classification methods often rely on limited feature sets and traditional machine learning approaches. These methods lack comprehensive integration of advanced time-frequency analysis, deep learning, and modern nature-inspired optimization techniques. To address this gap, we introduce a hybrid EEG-based theta-band meditation classif

Fuzzy based residual shufflenet based breast cancer detection using mammogram images.

Breast cancer is a condition in which abnormal breast cells grow and divide uncontrollably, resulting in the development of cancerous tissue. Detecting breast cancer at the preliminary phase is vital for improving survival rates and diagnostic outcomes. Though numerous Deep Learning (DL) frameworks have been proposed for detecting breast cancer, attaining accurate outcomes remains challenging. Thus, the Fuzzy-based Residual-ShuffleNet (Fuzzy RS-Net) is proposed for detecting breast cancer using mammogram images. Primarily, the mammogram image sourced from the dataset is fed as input to the wav

Dynamic computed tomography evaluation of the nasopharynx in normal Beagle dogs.

Pharyngeal collapsibility has been used as diagnostic criteria in dogs, whereas the normal range and quantitative method have not been studied. Dynamic and static computed tomography (CT) was performed in 23 normal Beagle dogs to quantify the nasopharyngeal collapsibility at different locations. Using dynamic CT, maximum and minimum nasopharyngeal cross-sectional areas (CSAs) were measured at the level of the cranial end of the soft palate, pterygoid hamulus, foramen lacerum, bony labyrinth, and caudal end of the soft palate. The ratio of all maximum and minimum CSA to nasopharyngeal CSA at th

High-resolution CT analysis of facial struts in trauma: 2. Osseous and soft-tissue complications.

In six cadavers, high-resolution thin-section computed tomography (CT) was used to evaluate the sequelae of experimentally produced facial trauma. As confirmed by pluridirectional tomography, CT was an effective imaging method for the detection and classification of facial fractures. The ability of CT to simultaneously depict both osseous and soft-tissue structures expands the role that diagnostic radiology can play in the evaluation of the traumatized face. A method of evaluation is presented in which the face is geometrically conceptualized as a series of triplanar (horizontal, sagittal, and

Emergency department management of cellulitis and other skin and soft-tissue infections.

Cellulitis and other skin and soft-tissue infections (SSTIs) are common presentations in the emergency department. This review describes the varied etiologies and patient presentations of the more common SSTIs: cellulitis, abscesses, and necrotizing soft-tissue infections. A discussion of the common diagnoses masquerading as SSTIs is presented, as well as a stepwise approach to avoiding misdiagnosis. Diagnostic studies are also evaluated, including discussions on ultrasound, computed tomography, and clinical decision rules. This review also provides an evidence-based analysis of the controvers

Aberrant Vessel with Potential Catastrophic Vascular Complications in a Patient with Chiari Malformation.

Craniovertebral junction anomalies are known to be associated with many bony, soft tissue, and vascular anomalies. We encountered a case of Chiari malformation type 1 with C2-D2 syrinx, in which computed tomography angiography showed an aberrant vessel (probably vein) coursing through the soft tissue along the posterior aspect of C1-C7 vertebral bodies along the right-sided joints, superiorly coursing posterior to C1-C2 joint and curving anteriorly over C1 to enter into the foramen magnum. Had this abnormality not been detected, catastrophic vascular consequences could have occurred.

A Rare Case of Primary osteosarcoma of urinary bladder.

Extraskeletal osteosarcoma is a malignant mesenchymal soft tissue tumor without attachment to the bone, and is able to produce osteoid or cartilaginous matrix. This entity accounts for 1% of all soft tissue sarcomas. Thus far, less than 35 cases of bladder osteosarcomas have been reported in the literature. These tumors are associated with very poor prognosis. We report a case of primary osteosarcoma of the urinary bladder presenting with intermittent hematuria, dysuria, and right flank pain. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography scan of the abdomen, pelvis, and chest revealed a bladder mass a

Necrotizing fasciitis of the paraspinous muscles.

Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a rare and lethal soft tissue infection that requires urgent surgical intervention. It is most often found in the extremities occurring with precipitating trauma or in immunocompromised states. Signs and symptoms are often vague or missing making early diagnosis very difficult. Our patient presented with flank pain and altered mental status but no known precipitating factors. Computed Tomography showed gas within and around the right paraspinous muscle suspicious for NF. Given NF's high lethality, early suspicion by emergency physicians of NF in patients with soft
