Somatosensory Temporal Discrimination Threshold Involves Inhibitory Mechanisms in the Primary Somatosensory Area.

UNLABELLED: Somatosensory temporal discrimination threshold (STDT) is defined as the shortest time interval necessary for a pair of tactile stimuli to be perceived as separate. Although STDT is altered in several neurological disorders, its neural bases are not entirely clear. We used continuous theta burst stimulation (cTBS) to condition the excitability of the primary somatosensory cortex in healthy humans to examine its possible contribution to STDT. Excitability was assessed using the recovery cycle of the N20 component of somatosensory evoked potentials (SEP) and the area of high-frequenc…

Reducing Tinnitus via Inhibitory Influence of the Sensorimotor System on Auditory Cortical Activity.

Tinnitus is the subjective perception of a sound without corresponding external acoustic stimuli. Research highlights the influence of the sensorimotor system on tinnitus perception. Associated neuronal processes, however, are insufficiently understood, and it remains unclear how and at which hierarchical level the sensorimotor system interacts with the tinnitus-processing auditory system. We therefore asked 23 patients suffering from chronic tinnitus (11 males) to perform specific exercises, aimed at relaxing or tensing the jaw area, which temporarily modulated tinnitus perception. Associated

Impaired Predictive Coding in the Somatosensory Mismatch Detection Network in Essential Tremor: A Cerebello-Cortical Perspective.

BACKGROUND: According to predictive coding theory, mismatch detection relies on comparing sensory inputs with internal predictions. In the somatosensory domain, this process involves interactions between cerebellar lobule VIII (CL8) and the secondary somatosensory cortex (S2) within the cortical tactile mismatch detection network. Essential tremor (ET) is a cerebellar disorder that provides a model to explore how cerebellar dysfunction affects the tactile mismatch detection network. OBJECTIVES: To test the hypothesis that cerebello-cortical interactions between CL8 and S2, involved in tactile…

Reversal of sensory deficit through sacral neuromodulation in an animal model of fecal incontinence.

BACKGROUND: Sacral neuromodulation (SNM) is a treatment option for intractable fecal incontinence. The mechanism of action is unclear, however, increasing evidence for afferent somatosensory effects exists. This study's aim was to elucidate effects of acute SNM on the cerebral cortex in a rodent model of pudendal nerve injury. METHODS: The effects of 14 Hz and 2 Hz SNM on sensory cortical activation were studied. In 32 anesthetized rats, anal canal evoked potentials (EPs) were recorded over the primary somatosensory cortex. Pudendal nerve injury was produced by 1-hour inflation of two intra-p…

Auditory compensation for early blindness in cat cerebral cortex.

Single-neuron activity was recorded in the caudal part of the anterior ectosylvian (AE) cortex of cats that had been deprived of vision for several years by means of binocular lid suture shortly after birth and in normal control animals. Over 300 neurons were tested in each group with auditory, visual, and somatosensory stimuli. We confirmed the existence of an anterior ectosylvian visual area (AEV) in the fundus and ventral bank of the AE sulcus. Neurons in AEV had purely visual responses in normal cats. In visually deprived cats, by contrast, only a minority of cells in this area still respo

Afferent properties of periarcuate neurons in macaque monkeys. I. Somatosensory responses.

The afferent properties of single neurons of the periarcuate cortex have been studied in the macaque monkey. Most of the recorded neurons responded to stimuli in one or two sensory modalities and, accordingly, they were classified as somatosensory, visual or bimodal (visual and somatosensory) neurons. Visual neurons were located rostral to the arcuate sulcus, whereas the somatosensory and the bimodal neurons were found predominantly caudal to this sulcus. Somatosensory neurons (n = 102) and bimodal neurons (n = 69) had identical somatic afferent properties. They were subdivided into 'tactile'

Neural correlates of somatosensory processing in patients with neglect.

PURPOSE: Recent evidence from neuroimaging studies using visual tasks suggests that the right superior parietal cortex plays a pivotal role for the recovery of neglect. Importantly, neglect-related deficits are not limited to the visual system and have a rather multimodal nature. We employed somatosensory stimulation in patients with neglect in order to analyze activity changes in networks that are presumably associated with this condition. METHODS: Eleven chronic neglect patients with right hemispherical stroke were investigated with a fMRI paradigm in which the affected and unaffected hand

Readiness potential and movement initiation in the rat.

Cortical field potentials were recorded by electrodes implanted chronically on the surface and at a 2.0 mm depth in various cortical areas in the left hemisphere in the rat during self-paced movements of the right forelimb. A surface-negative (s-N), depth-positive (d-P) cortical field potential appeared about 1.0 s (range: 0.5-1.5 s) before movement onset in the rostral (RFA) and caudal (CFA) forelimb areas of the motor cortex, and the somatosensory cortex, but not in the occipital cortex. Bipolar recording of electromyographic activities induced by the electrical stimulation of various cortic…

Site Specificity of Changes in Cortical Oxyhaemoglobin Concentration Induced by Water Immersion.

Our previous studies have shown that water immersion (WI) changes sensorimotor processing and cortical excitability in the sensorimotor regions of the brain. The present study examined the site specificity of the brain activation during WI using functional near infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). Cortical oxyhaemoglobin (O2Hb) levels in the anterior and posterior parts of the supplementary motor area (pre-SMA and SMA), primary motor cortex (M1), primary somatosensory cortex (S1), and posterior parietal cortex (PPC) were recorded using fNIRS (OMM-3000; Shimadzu Co.) before, during, and after WI in n…

A BOLD-fMRI study of cerebral activation induced by injection of algesic chemical substances into the anesthetized rat forepaw.

This study was performed to examine whether the brain activities induced by noxious algesic chemical substances in anesthetized animals could be detected by blood oxygen-level-dependent functional magnetic resonance imaging (BOLD-fMRI). Multislice gradient echo images of the primary somatosensory cortex were obtained using a 7.05 T superconducting system and a one-turned surface coil centered over the primary somatosensory cortex of the 1.0%-isoflurane-anesthetized rat. The Z-score t-map of BOLD signals and its time-course analysis revealed that subcutaneous injection of formalin into the left…

Receptive fields in the body-surface map in adult cortex defined by temporally correlated inputs.

Receptive fields (RFs) obtained at specific cortical sites can be used to define a topographic map of the body surface in adult mammalian somatosensory cortex. This map is not static, and RFs at particular cortical sites can change in size and location throughout adult life. Conversely, the cortical loci at which a given skin surface is represented can shift hundreds of micrometres across the cortex in the koniocortical field, area 3b (refs 1-12). This plasticity suggests that RFs derive not from rigid anatomical connections, but by the selection of a subset of a large number of inputs. We hav…

rTMS of the occipital cortex abolishes Braille reading and repetition priming in blind subjects.

To study the functional involvement of the visual cortex in Braille reading, we applied repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) over midoccipital (MOC) and primary somatosensory (SI) cortex in blind subjects. After rTMS of MOC, but not SI, subjects made significantly more errors and showed an abolishment of the improvement in reading speed following repetitive presentation of the same word list, suggesting a role of the visual cortex in repetition priming in the blind.

Neurophysiological correlates of perception-action binding in the somatosensory system.

Action control requires precisely and flexibly linking sensory input and motor output. This is true for both, visuo-motor and somatosensory-motor integration. However, while perception-action integration has been extensively investigated for the visual modality, data on how somatosensory and action-related information is associated are scarce. We use the Theory of Event Coding (TEC) as a framework to investigate perception-action integration in the somatosensory-motor domain. Based on studies examining the neural mechanisms underlying stimulus-response binding in the visuo-motor domain, the cu

Cortical stimulation mapping of phantom limb rolandic cortex. Case report.

Findings of intraoperative rolandic cortex mapping during awake craniotomy for a tumor in a patient with a contralateral upper-extremity amputation are presented. This patient sustained a traumatic amputation at the mid-humerus 24 years previously. Initially he had experienced rare painless phantom limb sensations but none in the past 10 years. Functional mapping during an awake craniotomy was performed to maximize safe tumor resection. Typical temporal and frontal speech areas were identified; motor representation of face and jaw extended more superiorly than sensory representation. Shoulder
