The relationship between the Nasality Severity Index 2.0 and perceptual judgments of hypernasality.

PURPOSE: The Nasality Severity Index 2.0 (NSI 2.0) forms a new, multiparametric approach in the identification of hypernasality. The present study aimed to investigate the correlation between the NSI 2.0 scores and the perceptual assessment of hypernasality. METHOD: Speech samples of 35 patients, representing a range of nasality from normal to severely hypernasal, were rated by four expert speech-language pathologists using visual analogue scaling (VAS) judging the degree of hypernasality, audible nasal airflow (ANA) and speech intelligibility. Inter- and intra-listener reliability was verifi

Effects of Speaking Rate on Variability of Second Formant Frequency Transitions in Dysarthria.

INTRODUCTION: This study examined the utility of multiple second formant (F2) slope metrics to capture differences in speech production for individuals with dysarthria and healthy controls as a function of speaking rate. In addition, the utility of F2 slope metrics for predicting severity of intelligibility impairment in dysarthria was examined. METHODS: Twenty three speakers with Parkinson's disease and mild to moderate hypokinetic dysarthria (HD), 9 speakers with various neurological diseases and mild to severe ataxic or ataxic-spastic dysarthria (AD), and 26 age-matched healthy control spe

Toward a Real-World Technical Test Battery for Remote Microphone Systems Used with Hearing Prostheses.

Remote microphones (RMs) enable clearer reception of speech than would be normally achievable when relying on the acoustic sound field at the listener's ear (Hawkins, J Sp Hear Disord 49, 409-418, 1984). They are used in a wide range of environments, with one example being for children in educational settings. The international standards defining the assessment methods of the technical performance of RMs rely on free-field (anechoic) delivery, a rarely met acoustic scenario. Although some work has been offered on more real-world testing (Husstedt et al., Int J Audiol 61, 34-45. 2022), the area

Observational Study to Preliminarily Characterize the Audiological Profile of Children With Down Syndrome.

PURPOSE: Down syndrome occurs in one of 700 births, and high rates of hearing loss are reported in this population. This puts children with Down syndrome at risk for communication, learning, and social development difficulties, compounding known language and cognitive vulnerabilities in this population. The purpose of this study was to comprehensively characterize audiological profiles in children with Down syndrome, including the use of extended high-frequency sensitivity and speech intelligibility index assessment. METHOD: Participants were 18 children with Down syndrome between 5 and 17 ye

Use of audiovisual information in speech perception by prelingually deaf children with cochlear implants: a first report.

OBJECTIVE: Although there has been a great deal of recent empirical work and new theoretical interest in audiovisual speech perception in both normal-hearing and hearing-impaired adults, relatively little is known about the development of these abilities and skills in deaf children with cochlear implants. This study examined how prelingually deafened children combine visual information available in the talker's face with auditory speech cues provided by their cochlear implants to enhance spoken language comprehension. DESIGN: Twenty-seven hearing-impaired children who use cochlear implants id

Evaluation, treatment, and analysis of a rare case of motor speech systems dyscoordination syndrome.

This report describes an unusual presentation of a voice disorder arising from inability to coordinate the three components of motor speech: respiration, phonation, and articulation. These systems were individually intact, as demonstrated by laryngoscopy, motor speech examination, and treatment methods achieving success under controlled conditions. Following initial programming of his deep brain stimulation (DBS) device, a 62-year-old male, diagnosed with Parkinson's disease (PD) 14 years previously, abruptly experienced a vocal disorder characterized by pressed, very low frequency creaky voic

Improved status following behavioural intervention in a case of severe dysarthria with stroke aetiology.

There is little published intervention outcome literature concerning dysarthria acquired from stroke. Single case studies have potential for more detailed specification and interpretation than is generally possible in larger studies so are informative for clinicians dealing with similar cases. Such research also contributes to planning of larger scale investigations. Behavioural intervention is described which was carried out between 7-9 months after stroke with a 69-year-old man with severe dysarthria. Pre-intervention stability between 5-7 months contrasted with post-intervention gains. Sign
