Epistaxis of carotid origin usually calls for adventurous and complicated techniques such as trapping, embolization or releasable balloons. But there is an O.-R.-L. technique which is no less effective: the direct rhino-sinusal approach to the sphenoidal sinus followed by tenting or occlusion through the fascia lata. This tamponage, when applied very close to the source of the bleeding, has proved very effective and only cuts off the carotid axis progressively and is generally well-tolerated. To set against theoretically possible risks of extensive thrombosis are the indisputable practical adv

This paper reports on the acoustic characteristics of the paranasal sinuses as determined from transmission characteristic measurements and morphological examinations. A new experimental approach was developed to explore the correspondence between antiresonance frequencies and the causal resonators [J. Dang and K. Honda, J. Acoust. Soc. Jpn. (E) 17, 93-99 (1996)], and it was adopted to determine the antiresonance frequency of each sinus cavity. In this study, the antiresonance frequencies and the locations of the sinus openings were estimated from transmission characteristics of the nasal trac

INTRODUCTION: Mucormycosis is a rare and acute fungal infection which is frequently lethal. The rhinocerebral form is usually seen in diabetics, but other localizations may occur in severely immunocompromised subjects.
OBSERVATION: We report the case of a sphenoidal sinusitis associated with a probable cavernous sinus thrombosis and carotid artery thrombosis with middle cerebral artery territory infarction. Diagnosis was made on histological examination following sphenoidotomy. Early medical and surgical treatment led to a good outcome.
CONCLUSION: The diagnosis of rhinocerebral mucormycosis

We report two patients with surgically proved mucoceles involving the anterior clinoid process. One patient had a mucocele of an Onodi cell and the other had a mucocele isolated to the anterior clinoid process. The MR signal was increased on both T1- and T2-weighted images in the first patient but was isointense on both sequences in the second patient, a finding that resulted in misdiagnosis. The developmental and anatomic features, as well as the diagnostic pitfalls, are discussed.

Extensive functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) was assessed retrospectively from the viewpoint of out-patients on the basis of their responses to a postal questionnaire, particularly in the Tokyo metropolitan area. Seventeen patients were included in this study (six females and 11 males) with an age range of 22-70 years. All the patients had at least ethmoid sinusitis. Additionally, some patients had maxillary or sphenoid sinusitis or polyps obstructing the nasal cavities. The average operation time and blood loss were 36 minutes and 31 ml, respectively. Four patients had to travel more …

This case report describes a rare instance of bilateral optic papillitis associated with histologically and bacteriologically proven tubercular osteomyelitis of the right sphenoid and temporal bone of the orbit in a 30-year-old woman. This case also highlights the usefulness of computerized axial tomography of the orbits, skull, and paranasal sinuses to evaluate optic neuritis and its pathophysiology in the event of no obvious cause or contributing systemic disease.

Three cases of hematogenous cranial osteitis are described. The etiology in two cases was a staphylococcus aureus infection from meningeal septicemia. One of these patients died and chronic osteomyelitis developed in the second case. The third case was one of multifocal tuberculous infection, localized in the cranium but asymptomatic. The last case was a Gradenigo-Lannois syndrome, and its etiology, either chronic otitis or sphenoidal sinusitis, is discussed.

We reported a patient with an extensive benign sinonasal squamous papilloma in the right nasal cavity with involvement of right sphenoid, ethmoid, maxillary sinuses and intracranial extension. This tumour is rare with very few reported cases in the literature of such extensive in nature. The tumour is excised completely with combined endoscopic transnasal and transcranial approaches. The patient remains disease free at a year interval of follow-up.

We report a case of an infection of a large sphenoidal sinus communicating with a hyperaerated mastoid. Endoscopic drainage of this large cavity was successful. We suggest that EES should have a place in the treatment of the sinusal pneumocele. Surgery should however be reserved for cosmetic purposes, infection, algetic symptoms and ocular problems. A cosmetic correction with osteotomy and bone resection can be associated with the endoscopic surgery.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the frequency of anatomical variation in nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses by comparing a unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP) group with a non-syndromic control group using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT).
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: This study included 24 UCLP patients in the UCLP group and 24 non-syndromic patients in the control group. Coronal CBCT images were taken in all patients and were evaluated for anatomical variation. The measurements obtained in this study were analysed using chi-square and Fisher's exact tests to compare the two

Pneumocephalus, defined as the presence of gas within the intracranial space, typically results from head trauma, surgery, or diagnostic/therapeutic procedures that disrupt the dura. However, spontaneous or non-traumatic pneumocephalus is rare. This video article presents a case report of a 64-year-old woman referred to the Department of Otolaryngology with a severe frontal headache and clear nasal discharge (rhinorrhea) after performing the Valsalva maneuver to relieve ear fullness. The patient had previously been diagnosed with sphenoidal meningocele and was awaiting skull base reconstructio

INTRODUCTION: Pneumatization of the sphenoid sinus (SS) varies widely among different ethnic groups. Information regarding the prevalence and significance of SS variants among Hispanic groups is limited. This study aims to describe and analyze pneumatization and septation patterns of the SS in a Hispanic population.
METHODS: A total of 160 paranasal sinus computed tomographies were reviewed by a head and neck-specialized radiologist and 2 otolaryngologists.
RESULTS: The postsellar and sellar types were the most frequent patterns of pneumatization observed, with a prevalence of 52.5 and 40%,
