Audiological findings in patients with ankylosing spondylitis.

Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a chronic inflammatory disease. The aim of this investigation was to study the relationship between AS and hearing loss. This study compared 28 patients with AS with 23 age-matched controls. All subjects underwent ENT examination, audiological and acoustic immittance measurements, and auditory brainstem response (ABR) tests. [Causes of disabling forms of tuberculous spondylitis].

To define the causes of disabling forms of tuberculous spondylitis, 218 patients with advanced complicated forms of tuberculosis of the vertebral column were examined. Their specific process was complicated by abscesses, fistulas, deformity, and instability of the affected portion of the vertebral column, and neurological disorders. [Classification of neurological disorders in tuberculous spondylitis].

The paper summarizes surveys of over 2500 patients with tuberculous spondylitis complicated by neurological disorders of the spinal cord. The authors identified 5 grades of these disorders: from reflex disorders to limb plegia and pelvic dysfunctions. The classification proposed made it possible to clearly systematize spinal cord disorders in patients with tuberculous spondylitis, to establish a topical diagnosis and the severity of spinal cord lesions, to choose surgical accesses and method for stabilizing the spine, and to make a research processing of clinical and neurological data.

The coexistence of Behçet's disease and ankylosing spondylitis.

We present the case of a young woman suffering from both ankylosing spondylitis and Behçet's disease, associated with a severe inflammatory arthritis. Although the HLA phenotype was positive for HLA-B27 and negative for HLA-B5, the clinical findings, especially the joint manifestations of Behçet's disease, seem to appear dominantly. The meaning of this rare combination was discussed with a review of the literature.

Three months postpartum, a 33-year-old woman with ankylosing spondylitis (AS) suffered multiple vertebral fractures. Bone mineral density was 61-67% of age-matched normal values at the lumbar spine and proximal femur, and an initial iliac crest bone biopsy revealed osteoporosis and osteomalacia. Secondary causes of bone disease were excluded, and the patient was treated with calcium, vitamin D, and nasal spray calcitonin (400 u/day). Olsalazine in ankylosing spondylitis: a pilot study.

OBJECTIVE: To test the safety and efficacy of olsalazine in men with ankylosing spondylitis (AS) unresponsive to nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs and physiotherapy. Diffuse lymphadenopathy as a manifestation of ankylosing spondylitis.

Diffuse lymphadenopathy has not been previously described in association with ankylosing spondylitis. A 22-year-old man who presented with anorexia, weight loss, shoulder pain, and diffuse lymphadenopathy is described.
