The presence of histiocytes in the epidermal and dermal infiltrate of mycosis fungoides was observed histochemically by revealing a diffuse pattern of acid alpha-naphthyl acetate esterase (ANAE) activity in the cytoplasm, and immunohistochemically by demonstrating the presence of histiocyte-specific 'enzymes', lysozyme, alpha-I-antitrypsin and alpha-I-antichymotrypsin. Histiocytes in the infiltrate of mycosis fungoides may be involved in antigen processing and interaction with T lymphocytes.

Veneous blood-citrate samples of patients with infectious mononucleosis were stained with DAPI, a newer fluorochrome (4',6-diamidino-2-phenylindole) to demonstrate the "large atypical lymphocytes" associated with this disease. Onchocerca ochengi, an intradermal filarial parasite of cattle in Africa, was shown to develop normally to the infective stage in a member of the Simulium damnosum complex, almost certainly S. sanctipauli. The development of the parasite in the thoracic musculature and head of the fly was completed in 6 days at an ambient temperature of 25-30 degrees C. To evaluate the diagnostic significance of the Sudan III staining for the fecal fat, the quantitative relationship between the number of fecal fat droplets examined microscopically and the amount of the fecal fat determined chemically was examined. Vital staining with a tetrazolium - alcian blue mixture gave a characteristic punctate red staining of the superior or the inferior tarsus in 69% of all examined patients with chronic simple conjuctivitis (69 patients subjected to 168 examinations). The superior tarsus was more frequently stained than the inferior (61% against 33%). The staining was most often concentrated centrally or in the middle anterior part of the superior tarsus.
