Conscious and nonconscious African American stereotypes: impact on first impression and diagnostic ratings by therapists.

Sixty therapists randomly assigned to 1 of 2 priming conditions were primed with African American stereotypes or neutral words using 80-ms flash words on a computer screen. This procedure may activate information processing outside of conscious awareness. After this task, participants were exposed to a brief vignette introducing Mr. X, a patient referred for treatment, and then were asked to rate Mr. X on various dimensions. Results indicate that participants primed with stereotype words rated Mr. X significantly less favorably on hostility-related attributes and significantly more favorably o

The effects of (+)-SKF10047 and ketamine hydrochloride on stereotyped behaviour, locomotor activity and ataxia in guinea pig.

Although behavioural studies of the effects of (+/-)-N-allylnormetazocine ((+)-SKF10047) and ketamine hydrochloride have been conducted in many species, there are no data available on their effects in guinea pig. The aim of the present study was to provide an analysis of the effects of these drugs on stereotyped behaviour, locomotor activity, ataxia and righting reflex latency in guinea pigs. (+)-SKF10047 did not produce significant stereotyped behaviour nor locomotor hyperactivity at any of the doses tested (2.5-10.0 mg/kg, i.p). While righting reflex latency was not significantly affected, s

Motor symptoms of the Rett syndrome: abnormal muscle tone, posture, locomotion and stereotyped movement.

Amongst the motor, mental, cognitive and emotional symptoms of the Rett syndrome (RS) the motor symptoms stand out as the hallmark in analyzing the essential pathophysiology. Summarizing the motor symptoms and searching into the knowledge of relevant basic sciences, this report aims at stressing the pathophysiological basis of RS which we have reported in previous studies. The core motor symptoms of RS consist of two aspects; firstly the unique developmental abnormalities of the discrepancy of crawling and walking and secondly the pathognomonic symptoms which include the abnormal muscle tone,

Person memory: the role of traits, group stereotypes, and specific behaviors in the cognitive representation of persons.

Subjects read a list of statements describing behaviors manifested by a target person who had previously been described by a set of personality trait adjectives. Some statements referred to the person by name, whereas others referred to him as a member of a stereotyped social group. The consistency of the behaviors with expectancies based on these general target characterizations was varied. Results of Experiment 1 showed that when the trait-adjective characterization of the target and the target's group membership had similar implications, the relative ease of recalling behaviors that were co

[Different role of various regions of the caudate nucleus in phenamine-induced stereotyped behavior in cats].

Electrolytic ablation of the ventral parts of the cat caudate nucleus head results in an increase of frequency and disorganization of the pattern of the stereotype head turnings, induced by large doses of amphetamine. Lesion of the dorsal parts, on the other hand, is attended with a decreased number and limited manifestation of stereotype movements. A similar effect appears following a low frequency electrical stimulation of the nucleus ventral part. The disrupting action of neuroleptic haloperidol on the amphetamine-induced stereotype is weakened in animals with ventral lesions and enhanced i

Academic field, not gender, moderates the association between math gender stereotype endorsement and arithmetic performance.

Gender differences in mathematics-related outcomes and attitudes, such as math anxiety (MA) and math self-concept (MSC), have been extensively studied among school samples, particularly in relation to the math achievement gap. Much less attention has been paid to the math-related differences among students who have already selected an academic field, and to the role played by endorsing the stereotype that mathematics is a male domain (math gender stereotype, MGS). This study investigates how MA, MSC, and MGS endorsement relate to arithmetic performance, and whether these associations vary by g

Effects of mindful breathing meditation on stereotype expression in two randomized controlled double-blinded trials.

Models of stereotypes and discrimination propose the involvement of attentional control and executive functioning in successfully suppressing discriminatory behavior. A practice that has been shown to improve cognitive control, potentially even after short training durations, is mindfulness meditation, and beneficial effects on stereotype activation and the expression of discriminatory behavior have been reported. In two randomized controlled double-blinded trials, the effects of short mindful breathing meditation trainings (45 minutes in total in Experiment 1, 80 minutes in Experiment 2) on t

Age-based stereotypes in hiring and training: how digitalization and labor shortages reshape employer decisions.

Demographic aging contributes to labor shortages and strains welfare systems across Europe, including Germany. In response, extending older workers' labor market participation has become a growing policy concern. Yet, age-based stereotypes may hinder this goal by reducing their chances in personnel decisions like hiring and training. However, the introduction of digital technologies is reshaping work dynamics, while labor shortages-partly driven by demographic aging-are intensifying competition for skilled workers. This puts pressure on companies to upskill their workforce and secure qualified

Beyond Stereotypes: Understanding Romantic Relationships and Dating Perspectives of Chinese Youth with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities.

This study explored the romantic relationship perspectives and experiences of Chinese youth with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) through semi-structured interviews with 18 participants. Analysis revealed three themes: conceptualizations of love and relationships; barriers and facilitators to relationship pursuit; and support systems for romantic aspirations. Findings suggest that participants possess complex understandings of romantic relationships, face multi-layered barriers including family attitudes and limited social opportunities, and benefit from both formal and inform

Biophysical network modeling of temporal and stereotyped sequence propagation of neural activity in the premotor nucleus HVC.

Stereotyped neural sequences are often exhibited in the brain, yet the neurophysiological mechanisms underlying their generation are not fully understood. Birdsong is a prominent model to study such behavior, particularly because juvenile songbirds progressively learn from their tutors and by adulthood are able to sing stereotyped song patterns. The songbird premotor nucleus HVC coordinates motor and auditory activity responsible for learned vocalizations. The HVC comprises three neural populations that have distinct in vitro and in vivo electrophysiological responses. Typically, models that e

Apigenin Alleviates Autistic-like Stereotyped Repetitive Behaviors and Mitigates Brain Oxidative Stress in Mice.

Studying the involvement of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs), specifically α7-nAChRs, in neuropsychiatric brain disorders such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has gained a growing interest. The flavonoid apigenin (APG) has been confirmed in its pharmacological action as a positive allosteric modulator of α7-nAChRs. However, there is no research describing the pharmacological potential of APG in ASD. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of the subchronic systemic treatment of APG (10-30 mg/kg) on ASD-like repetitive and compulsive-like behaviors and oxidative stress sta

Adolescent chemogenetic activation of dopaminergic neurons leads to reversible decreases in amphetamine-induced stereotypic behavior.

Chronic perturbations of neuronal activity can evoke homeostatic and new setpoints for neurotransmission. Using chemogenetics to probe the relationship between neuronal cell types and behavior, we recently found reversible decreases in dopamine (DA) transmission, basal behavior, and amphetamine (AMPH) response following repeated stimulation of DA neurons in adult mice. It is unclear, however, whether altering DA neuronal activity via chemogenetics early in development leads to behavioral phenotypes that are reversible, as alterations of neuronal activity during developmentally sensitive period

Qualitative Exploration of the Hidden Curriculum in Communicating Dog Breed Stereotypes During Veterinary Clinical Training.

Cultural transmission of breed-specific beliefs about canine pain sensitivity occurs during veterinary education and training. However, breed-specific beliefs held by veterinarians do not align well with experimental measures of pain observed across dog breeds and are unlikely to be helpful in clinical decision making. The aim of the present study was to gain a deeper understanding of how dog breed pain stereotypes are developed and/or reinforced during clinical veterinary training. Non-participant, unobtrusive observations were conducted for a single clinical rotation block across three speci

Can aquatic exercises contribute to the improvement of the gait stereotype function in patients with Long COVID outcomes?

A variety of rehabilitation programmes can be offered to Long COVID patients, specifically physical training. Indeed 90% of these patients reports impairments of verticalization, stability and spatial orientation, making difficult exercise in the gym. The aim of our study was to assess the effectiveness and safety of aquatic exercise techniques as part of a comprehensive rehabilitation program for patients with Long COVID. The first of a two-stage program involved development of aquatic exercises technique, which was evaluated in 12 patients with impaired upright posture control before and aft

Characterizing Features of Human Circulating B Cells Carrying CLL-Like Stereotyped Immunoglobulin Rearrangements.

Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL) is characterized by the accumulation of monoclonal CD5+ B cells with low surface immunoglobulins (IG). About 40% of CLL clones utilize quasi-identical B cell receptors, defined as stereotyped BCR. CLL-like stereotyped-IG rearrangements are present in normal B cells as a part of the public IG repertoire. In this study, we collected details on the representation and features of CLL-like stereotyped-IG in the IGH repertoire of B-cell subpopulations purified from the peripheral blood of nine healthy donors. The B-cell subpopulations were also fractioned according

Cholinergic Stress Signals Accompany MicroRNA-Associated Stereotypic Behavior and Glutamatergic Neuromodulation in the Prefrontal Cortex.

Stereotypic behavior (SB) is common in emotional stress-involved psychiatric disorders and is often attributed to glutamatergic impairments, but the underlying molecular mechanisms are unknown. Given the neuro-modulatory role of acetylcholine, we sought behavioral-transcriptomic links in SB using TgR transgenic mice with impaired cholinergic transmission due to over-expression of the stress-inducible soluble 'readthrough' acetylcholinesterase-R splice variant AChE-R. TgR mice showed impaired organization of behavior, performance errors in a serial maze test, escape-like locomotion, intensified

Neural correlates of the implicit processing of grammatical and stereotypical gender violations: A masked and unmasked priming study.

The aim of this study was to explore the neural correlates of the automatic activation of gender stereotypes by using the masked and unmasked priming technique. Event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded while participants were presented with an Italian third-person singular pronoun (lui or lei) that were preceded by either a grammatically-marked (e.g., passeggeraFEM, pensionatoMASC) or stereotypically-associated (e.g., insegnanteFEM, conducenteMASC) role noun. Participants were required to judge the grammatical gender of the personal pronoun ignoring the preceding word. This word was prese
