Radiologic abnormalities of the appendicular skeleton of the lion (Panthera leo): incidental findings and Mycobacterium bovis-induced changes.

Thoracic and pelvic limbs from 15 euthanized free-ranging lions (Panthera leo), ranging in age from 16 to 144 months, underwent standard rad … ial cruciate ligament rupture in an 8-year-old male. Trauma induced joint lesions were seen in four stifles (fragmented or displaced sesamoid bones, fragmented meniscal ossicle, or mineralized fragments). Radiological abnormalities believed to be caused by M. bovis were present in one stifle, one radiocarpal three tibiotarsal, and one tarsometatarsal joi …

Mapping Stresses on the Tibial Plateau Cartilage in an Ovine Model Using In-Vivo Gait Kinematics.

Understanding stresses within the knee joint is central to understanding knee function, and the etiology and progression of degenerative joint diseases such as post-traumatic osteoarthritis. In this study, in vivo gait kinematics of four ovine subjects were recorded using a highly accurate Instrumented Spatial Linkage (ISL) as each subject walked on a standard treadmill. The subjects were then sacrificed, and the right hind limbs removed. Ten purpose-built Fibre Bragg Grating (FBG) sensors were positioned within each stifle joint and used to measured contact stresses on the articulating surfac…

Radiographic diagnosis and surgical management for successful outcomes for osteochondrosis in Japanese Black calves.

Osteochondrosis (OC) is not well recognized in cattle. Japanese Black (JB) cattle are valued for their beef and studies regarding OC are scarce. Hence, the aim of this study was to retrospectively discuss clinical and radiographical findings, diagnosis and treatment options for OC in JB cattle for successful outcomes. Medical records of 11 calves affected with OC were reviewed, retrospectively. Clinical and radiographic findings, treatment and outcomes and postmortem examination findings were analyzed. All calves had lameness. Stifle (4/14) and tarsal (4/14) were the most affected joints. Subc…

Case Report of a Complex Lateral Femorotibial Joint Injury With Popliteal Tendonitis in a Foal.

A two-month-old, Spanish breed, foal was referred with right hind limb lameness of two weeks duration. Clinical examinations confirmed a complex combination of lesions within the lateral femorotibial joint, including a subchondral bone cyst in the lateral femoral condyle, a severe popliteal tendonitis, and a delayed cartilage detachment of the lateral femoral condyle. Because of the complex association of these lesions, poor prognosis for an athletic career was given to the owner. Four years later, the filly is pasture sound. Lesions of the popliteal tendon in the horse are uncommon. The popli

[Musculotendinopathy of the gastrocnemius muscle in a Labrador Retriever. A case report].

Musculotendinopathy at the origin of the gastrocnemius muscle is a rare disease mostly described in herding dogs. The etiology is based on repeated myotendinous strain of the muscle in athletic dogs. Clinically, the patient displays chronic pelvic limb lameness and pain at the lateral fabella during palpation of this area. There is no instability of the stifle present. Radiographic findings (osteophyte formation at the origin of the muscle and the lateral fabella) support the potential diagnosis. Magnetic resonance tomography shows edematous changes and enhancement after intravenous applicatio…

Treatment of medial patellar luxation by femoral closing wedge ostectomy using a distal femoral plate in four dogs.

This case report describes the treatment of recurrent medial patellar luxation associated with varus deformity of the distal femur by distal femoral ostectomy stabilised using a distal femoral plate. Four dogs (five affected limbs) were included in the study. All cases had received previous surgery for medial patellar luxation but remained significantly lame. All were treated by femoral ostectomy to correct distal femoral varus deformity with application of a distal femoral bone plate. All cases improved following surgery. An excellent outcome was recorded in four of five cases. Lameness persi

Surgical repair of bilateral lateral patellar luxation in a foal using block-recession trochleoplasty and polypropylene mesh reinforcement: Case report and review of literature.

Patellar luxation is a rare orthopedic condition in horses, with congenital lateral patellar luxation being the most frequently reported form. A few sporadic reports have described surgical options for addressing equine patellar luxation. This report details the clinical presentation of a 2-month-old Italian Trotter foal diagnosed with bilateral lateral patellar luxation. Staged surgical correction of both stifles was performed, including block recession trochleoplasty combined with the application of polypropylene mesh for reinforcing medial imbrication sutures. Intra- and post-operative eval…

Intradermal rabies vaccination: the evolution and future of pre- and post-exposure prophylaxis.

Inactivated rabies vaccines have been used to pioneer the immunological and economical advantages of intradermal (ID) administration over 35 years. Vaccine shortages or its prohibitive cost stimulated studies of various doses, frequency and sites of injection. An economical regimen for pre-exposure prophylaxis requires one-tenth of an intramuscular dose, but the early popularity of the method has been stifled by pharmaceutical regulations. There has also been reluctance to use multiple-site post-exposure ID regimens, except in a very few Asian counties. A new four-site ID regimen could overcom…

Rotating dome trochleoplasty: an experimental technique for correction of patellar luxation using a feline model.

The purpose of this study was to compare a trochlear block recession to a rotating dome trochleoplasty, a novel technique for the correction of patellar luxation in small animals. Twenty-eight limbs were used from 14 feline cadavers. With the stifles in flexion and extension, computed tomography was utilized to compare width and depth of the trochlea, medial trochlear ridge height, trochlear articular surface area preserved, patellar contact articular surface area, patellar area covered by the trochlear ridges and patellar tilt angle. The results of this study demonstrated that a rotating dome…

Dysregulation of strongyloidiasis: a new hypothesis.

Few other human parasites are associated with such a diverse spectrum of clinical manifestations as Strongyloides stercoralis, yet the basic biological behavior of this unusually versatile worm, particularly with respect to its ability to cause severe disseminated disease in certain hosts, is poorly understood. The current uncritical acceptance of the theory that cell-mediated immunity controls autoinfection has stifled research in other directions. After reviewing what is and is not known about the parasite's behavior in its host, this article explores some of the mechanisms that could be inv…

Inflammatory pattern of the infrapatellar fat pad in dogs with canine cruciate ligament disease.

BACKGROUND: Despite the importance of inflammation during the pathogenesis of cranial cruciate ligament disease (CCLD) in dogs and despite the latest knowledge suggesting a significant role of adipose tissue in osteoarthritis, the infrapatellar fat pad (IFP) was up to now mostly disregarded in veterinary investigations. In the present study, the inflammatory activity of the IFP, the main adipose structure within the stifle joint, was thoroughly investigated to evaluate its potential impact in the pathogenesis of this common disease of our canine companions. Samples of IFP, subcutaneous adipose…

Zlig ligament reconstruction versus tibial plateau leveling osteotomy for cranial cruciate ligament rupture in dogs: a prospective controlled study.

OBJECTIVES: Cranial cruciate ligament rupture (CCLR) is one of the most common causes of hindlimb lameness in dogs, causing stifle instability, osteoarthritis and damage to the medial meniscus. While tibial plateau leveling osteotomy (TPLO) is the most common performed method for cranial cruciate ligament rupture in dogs, intra-articular reconstruction of the cranial cruciate ligament is the gold standard in human medicine. The objective of this prospective clinical study was to investigate whether the synthetic ligament Zlig by Eickemeyer® for intra-articular reconstruction can achieve simila…

Surgical management of haemangiopericytoma involving the biceps femoris muscle in four dogs.

Four dogs with haemangiopericytoma of the subcutaneous tissue overlying and infiltrating the biceps femoris muscle were successfully managed using complete resection of the involved muscle with 2 to 3 cm skin margins. Postoperatively, no local recurrence was noted in any of the dogs in a follow-up period of four to 33 months (mean 22 months). Wound dehiscence, attributed to increased tension and inadequate exercise restriction, occurred in two of the four cases. Closure of the large cutaneous deficit in the craniolateral thigh and stifle was achieved by rotation of a flank-fold skin flap in on…

Importance of platelets in increased vascular permeability evoked by experimental haemarthrosis in synovium of the rat.

Increased vascular permeability of synovium induced by experimental haemarthrosis was studied in the stifle joint of the rat. Abnormal permeability was detected by injecting animals intravenously with colloidal carbon and examining the synovial vessels for intramural deposits of carbon. Both fresh and heparinized whole blood injected into the joint induced a marked permeability response of synovial venules which persisted for 18 hours. Platelets suspended in heparinized Tyrode solution induced a similar response, but one lasting only 12 hours. The permeability effects of suspensions of leucocy…

Surgical and anatomic study of calving paralysis.

Dissections of the bovine pelvic inlet region were made to determine which nerves were vulnerable to fetal-induced traumatic damage. Surgical sections of the obturator nerves and the lumbar roots of the sciatic (ischiatic) nerves were done to determine a possible cause of calving paralysis. Only 1 of 11 cattle in which bilateral obturator nerve section was done was unable to stand after the operation, and in this individual, secondary stifle injuries were found on necropsy. Subsequent surgical operations were performed on some of these cattle in order to section the lumbar root of the sciatic …

Joint laxity varies in response to partial and complete anterior cruciate ligament injuries throughout skeletal growth.

Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries are increasingly common in the skeletally immature population. As such there is a need to increase our understanding of the biomechanical function of the joint following partial and complete ACL injury during skeletal growth. In this work, we aimed to assess changes in knee kinematics and loading of the remaining soft tissues following both partial and complete ACL injury in a porcine model. To do so, we applied anterior-posterior tibial loads and varus-valgus moments to stifle joints of female pigs ranging from early juvenile to late adolescent ages a…
