The matrix (M) protein of vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) is a major structural component of the virion which is generally believed to bridge between the membrane envelope and the ribonucleocapsid (RNP) core. LongoVital (LV) (DK. reg. no. 5178/75) is a herbal-based tablet enriched with recommended doses of vitamins. Peripheral lymphocyte subsets: T-helper/CD4 (OKT4+) and T-suppressor/cytotoxic/CD8 (OKT8+) were studied quantitatively in 31 otherwise healthy patients with minor recurrent aphthous ulceration (RAU) during six months' daily LV intake in a double-blind, randomised, crossover 1-year study. A full haematology screen was carried out on 398 patients under investigation for recurrent oral ulceration or stomatitis. Thirty-three patients were found to have lowered serum folate and/or red cell folate levels without iron deficiency. Thirty piglets 1 to 4 weeks old from five herds had epidermal, foot, conjunctival and renal lesions typical of exudative epidermitis. Ten piglets had a large central ulceration of the dorsum of the tongue.
