The ferroptosis-mediated domino effect: metabolic crosstalk from intervertebral disc degeneration to spinal deformity and cord injury: a mini review.

Spinal degeneration, spinal deformity, and spinal cord injury (SCI) are classically managed as discrete biomechanical or neurological entities. However, emerging evidence reveals them as an interconnected pathological continuum. This mini-review introduces the "ferroptosis-mediated domino effect" as the core metabolic driver linking these conditions. The cascade initiates within the avascular intervertebral disc, where aberrant mechanotransduction (e.g., via Piezo1) provokes severe oxidative stress and subsequent ferroptosis, leading to extracellular matrix degradation and structural collapse.

Deterioration of Cement-Based Materials in Low-Temperature Seawater.

Cementitious materials have potential for infrastructure development in low-temperature marine environments, including in seawater at high latitudes and in deep-sea environments (water depths of >1000 m). Although the marine deterioration of cementitious materials has been widely investigated, the influence of seawater temperature has not been elucidated. In this study, to determine the effects of low-temperature seawater on the durability of cementitious materials, cement paste specimens were immersed in a seawater tank at room temperature and 2 °C for 433 days. The specimen immersed in low-t

Histopathological changes in juvenile Schistosoma haematobium harboured in hamsters treated with artemether.

Histopathological changes in juvenile Schistosoma haematobium, caused by artemether administered to the infected hamsters, were studied. Hamsters were infected with S. haematobium cercariae, and after 28 days, a single dose of artemether (300 mg/kg) was administered intragastrically. After 24 h, 72 h and 7 days, groups of two hamsters were sacrificed, and livers were removed, fixed and processed routinely, and examined by light microscopy. After 24 h, 93% of the schistosomulae examined showed degeneration, which included swelling of the tegument, adherence of inflammatory cells to the damaged

[Arthroscopic treatment of scapholunate injuries : Diagnosis, classification, and the 4R algorithm].

Lesions of the scapholunate ligament are among the most common causes of carpal instability and may progress to scapholunate advanced collapse with progressive wrist osteoarthritis if left untreated. This review presents current arthroscopic treatment options in a structured manner and places them in the context of anatomy, pathomechanics, classification systems, and diagnostics. Wrist arthroscopy is the diagnostic gold standard and enables stage-appropriate treatment. According to the 4R algorithm acute refixations, capsuloligamentous reinforcement techniques, reconstructive procedures using

Fifteen-minute consultation: A structured approach to a child with primary spontaneous pneumothorax.

Primary spontaneous pneumothorax (PSP) is an uncommon presentation in children but may occur at any age and occurs in patients with no pre-existing lung disease. Management aims are to re-expand the collapsed lung, relieve pressure in the intrapleural space and avoid a tension pneumothorax. Correct management of PSP will avoid unnecessary intervention, reduce length of hospital stay and also reduce the risk of recurrence. There are no established guidelines for treating PSP in children and there is significant variation in management among centres and clinicians. This article provides a clear,

Oropharyngeal teratoma in a neonatal sable antelope (Hippotragus niger).

A neonatal male sable antelope (Hippotragus niger) was found dead. A 5 by 12-cm lobulated mass was present in the oral cavity, attached to the caudal border of the soft palate; this mass contained hair, cartilage, bone, nervous tissue, muscle, and multiple gland-like structures. Histopathologic diagnosis was consistent with oropharyngeal teratoma. As a result of the lack of wear of the fetal hooves, the firm, collapsed appearance of the lungs, and the lack of other gross or histopathologic abnormalities, the oropharyngeal tumor is suspected to have caused an airway obstruction, resulting in th

Reconstruction of the nose damaged by cocaine.

Nasal snorting of cocaine crystals causes destruction of the septal and nasal mucosa, which eventually provides exposure of the septal cartilage and nasal bones. This exposure eventually leads to septal chrondritis and nasal bone osteomyelitis. As this process continues, the severe loss of cartilage and bone allows gradual to total collapse of the nose. Correction of this deformity is best achieved by supplying new lining; this is possible by turning nasolabial flaps into the nasal vestibule to replace the lost and released lining. Once this has been accomplished, costal cartilage grafts can b

[Laryngomalacia--endoscopic microsurgical treatment].

Laryngomalacia is caused by inspiratory collapse of the supraglottic structures in babies. This predominant cause of stridor in the first years of life has a graded occurrence from an insignificant sound phenomenon to insufficient alveolar ventilation with possible serious complications and development of dystrophy. The laryngomalacia must be sub-classified by direct laryngoscopy with a flexible endoscope under spontaneous respiration. Microsurgical techniques for performing supraglottoplasty have recently been introduced. The authors describe symptoms and results in four cases of laryngomalac

[Neurologic complications of osteoporotic spinal collapses. Apropos of 8 cases].

The prevalence of neurological complications in patients with osteoporotic vertebral collapse and the risk factors for neurological compromise were studied retrospectively in 138 inpatients. Six per cent of patients had objective neurological loss. Patients with neurological loss were more likely to have changes suggestive of malignant disease on roentgenograms, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging. Diagnosis was based on magnetic resonance imaging and examination of vertebral biopsy specimens. Comparison of patients with and without neurological loss suggested that an intravert

Bronchopulmonary dysplasia in the adult.

We describe 3 patients with adult respiratory distress syndrome that eventuated in a pathologic picture of honeycomb lung and a radiographic picture of variably cystic lung super-imposed on a background of diffuse alveolar infiltrates. All 3 patients had been treated with unusually high pressures of PEEP as well as high concentrations of oxygen for long periods of time (3 to 7 wk). Microscopically, the cystic structures in our patients appeared to be derived from collapse and fibrosis of the alveolar parenchyma with dilatation of the alveolar ducts. We suggest that this process is morphologica

Tracheomalacia in an infant with multiplex congenita (Larsen's) syndrome.

An infant born with multiplex congenita (Larsen's) syndrome developed respiratory distress 30 days following tracheostomy for relief of upper airway obstruction. The infant had structural and functional abnormalities of the thoracic cage. Tracheobronchoscopy revealed excessive compliance of the trachea with a tendency for collapse of the tracheal rings and obliteration of the tracheal lumen. Continuous positive airway pressure in the range of 20-25 cm H2O was used to maintain patency of the tracheal lumen and assure adequate ventilation. Hemodynamic and pulmonary barometric complications often

A Hydrophobic Core Stabilizes the Residual Structure in the RRM2 Intermediate State of the ALS-linked Protein TDP-43.

Folding intermediates mediate both protein folding and the misfolding and aggregation observed in human diseases, including amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), and are prime targets for therapeutic interventions. In this study, we identified the core nucleus of structure for a folding intermediate in the second RNA recognition motif (RRM2) of the ALS-linked RNA-binding protein, TDP-43 (TAR DNA-binding protein-43), using a combination of experimental and computational approaches. Urea equilibrium unfolding studies revealed that the RRM2 intermediate state consists of collapsed residual seconda

Research Progress of Injectable Hydrogels Targeting Specific Pathogenesis for Osteonecrosis of the Femoral Head.

Osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH) remains a significant clinical challenge in orthopedics, characterized by the poor self-regenerative ability of necrotic bone tissue. Without timely and effective intervention, over 70% of affected patients will eventually suffer from femoral head collapse and require total hip arthroplasty(THA). ONFH arises from different pathways and causes, including traumatic vascular disruption and nontraumatic factors such as steroid-induced ONFH(SONFH) and alcohol-induced ONFH(AIONFH) . Based on these complex pathways, injectable hydrogels have emerged as a minim

Multifragmentary Thoracic Fracture as an Initial Sign of Solitary Bone Plasmacytoma: Trauma-Oncologic Approach in a Mexican Patient.

Although multifragmentary thoracic fractures are usually associated with high-energy trauma, they may also be the initial manifestation of an underlying neoplasm. Although infrequent, Solitary Bone Plasmacytoma (SBP) can present with severe vertebral collapse even after minimal trauma, highlighting the importance of considering oncological aetiologies in patients with atypical vertebral pain or slow progression. We present the case of a 48-year-old Mexican patient with a multifragmentary T7 fracture secondary to dorsal trauma, which was initially managed conservatively. The appearance of progr

Establishment and evaluation of an animal model of acquired tracheomalacia following tracheostomy in rabbits.

PURPOSE: Acquired tracheomalacia (TM) following tracheostomy can hinder decannulation and affect the quality of life of pediatric patients. Therefore, a reproducible animal model of type III TM is required for further research and therapeutic development. METHODS: We established a rabbit model of acquired TM by resecting the anterior walls of the 2nd to 4th tracheal cartilage rings, while preserving the mucosa. Bronchoscopic evaluations were conducted at three time points: before surgery (term 1), immediately after surgery (term 2), and 3-4 months post-surgery (term 3). The area of the trache

A Modular Strategy to Engineer Complex Tissues and Organs.

Currently, there are no synthetic or biologic materials suitable for long-term treatment of large tracheal defects. A successful tracheal replacement must (1) have radial rigidity to prevent airway collapse during respiration, (2) contain an immunoprotective respiratory epithelium, and (3) integrate with the host vasculature to support epithelium viability. Herein, biopolymer microspheres are used to deliver chondrogenic growth factors to human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) seeded in a custom mold that self-assemble into cartilage rings, which can be fused into tubes. These rings and tubes ca

Lateral collapse of the tarsal navicular in patients with rheumatoid arthritis: Implications for pes planovarus deformity.

OBJECTIVES: In patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), the talonavicular joint is commonly involved and midfoot collapse can lead to progressive flattening of the arch. Despite a general awareness of the important structural role of the talonavicular joint in rheumatoid foot disease, details of its destructive pattern have not been elucidated. METHODS: We cross-sectionally investigated 176 RA patients (342 feet) and classified their feet into the following five groups according to radiographic findings: arthritis (RA changes with normal navicular shape), Müller-Weiss Disease (MWD) (collapse

[Pathophysiology of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome and its cardiometabolic consequences].

Obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS) is characterized by recurrent partial or complete pharyngeal collapses during sleep. The pathophysiology of OSAS is complex and multifactorial. Factors influencing upper airway patency include a reduction in upper airway dimensions that can result from both anatomical and functional alterations (obesity, fluid shift or maxillo-facial structural changes), and increased pharyngeal collapsibility owing to reduced neuromuscular compensation and lack of the pharyngeal protective reflex during sleep. Severe OSAS is associated with a high cardiometabolic risk.

Volumetric analysis of the pharynx in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) treated with maxillomandibular advancement (MMA).

INTRODUCTION: Maxillomandibular advancement (MMA) has been reported to be the most effective surgical treatment of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Most reports about MMA aim to confirm the efficiency of this treatment modality, but few describe the anatomical changes produced in the pharynx by the surgery. Thus, the objective of the present investigation was to quantify the anatomical changes of the pharynx that occur in patients with OSA after MMA surgery using magnetic resonance (MR). METHODS: Twenty patients with a polysomnographic diagnosis of OSA participated in the study. All patients we

Pathobiology of pulmonary fibrosis.

Pulmonary fibrosis is characterized by an increase in lung matrix and alterations in the numbers and spatial relationships of lung parenchymal cells. The increase in matrix results from a proliferation and "activation" of fibroblasts (FB) with increased production and deposition of matrix macromolecules at sites of lung injury. Connective tissue cell activation is associated with increased gene expression of collagens, fibronectin, proteoglycans and other matrix components; cytoskeletal alterations; and probably also with changes in the expression of matrix receptors and matrix-degrading enzym
