Immunomodulating activity of myelopeptides: clinical trials.

Bone marrow cells of various animal species and the human produce a group of bioregulatory peptides called myelopeptides (MPs). A highly purified myelopeptide (MP) fraction and some individual molecules have been isolated from the supernatant of the porcine bone marrow cell culture by successive gel chromatography and HPLC. Myelopeptides have a wide spectrum of functions including immunoregulatory, differentiating, and opiate-like activities. A new immunoreactive drug, Myelopidum, has been created on the basis of myelopeptides. This drug is effectively used in Russian medicine for treating dis

The pathology of canine mammary candidiasis with embolic dissemination in a dog.

Candidiasis is a fungal disease caused by Candida albicans or other members of the genus Candida. Descriptions of candidiasis are comparatively reduced in veterinary relative to human medicine, with no cases of mammary candidiasis being identified in pet animals. This report presents the cytological, pathological, and molecular findings of mammary candidiasis with embolic dissemination in a postpartum dog. A 1-year-old, female Shih-tzu dog that had recently given birth was admitted to a veterinary teaching hospital in Southern Brazil after repeated episodes of intermittent mammary disease and

Case Report: Unusual Peritoneopericardial Diaphragmatic Hernia in an 8-Month-Old German Shepherd Dog, Associated With a Pericardial Pseudocyst and Coexisting Severe Pericardial Effusion Resulting in Right-Sided Heart Failure.

Objective: This study aims to describe an unusual peritoneopericardial diaphragmatic hernia (PPDH) in an 8-month-old German shepherd dog, associated with a pericardial pseudocyst and coexisting severe pericardial effusion resulting in right-sided heart failure. Case Summary: An 8-month-old, male, intact, German shepherd dog, was referred for ascites. Echocardiography revealed a severe pericardial effusion with a cyst-like structure within the pericardium and consequently decompensated right-sided heart failure. The ascites was secondary to right-sided heart failure (cardiac tamponade). Compute

Case Report: Intramedullary Intervertebral Disk Extrusion in a Cat: Clinical, Computed Tomographic, High-Field Magnetic Resonance Imaging, and Outcome Findings.

Background: Intramedullary disk extrusions has rarely been described in veterinary medicine, more especially in cats, with only two cases are reported in the veterinary literature. Diagnosis may be difficult, even though clinical presentation and imaging studies, such as MRI or CT, can present specific features. Treatment and prognosis are not clearly described. Case presentation: A 10-year-old domestic shorthair female cat was evaluated for a 12 h-history of peracute-onset of paraparesis with flaccid tail and urinary and fecal incontinence. The patellar reflexes were normal, the pelvic flexor

Unusual cases of penile vascular tumors in dogs: report of two cases.

Vascular tumors affecting the reproductive tract in male dogs, including hemangiomas and hemangiosarcomas, are rarely reported in veterinary medicine. However, they are more frequently observed in other anatomical sites in dogs such as the skin, spleen, and the liver. Despite their low incidence in the genital region, these neoplasms should be considered when compatible clinical signs are observed. This case report describes the clinical and pathological findings of two penile vascular neoplasms in dogs, highlighting their differing prognoses. The first case was classified as hemangiosarcoma a

Clinical predictive significance of biomarker molecules elevation during the transition period in cattle suffering from different pathological states: A review.

The transition period (TP), which extends from 3 weeks before 3 weeks post parturition, is a critical period regarding the health, productivity, and profitability of dairy animals, during which most health disorders arise, including lameness, mastitis, rumen acidosis, ketosis, hypocalcemia (HC) (milk fever), left-displaced abomasum, fatty liver, hypophosphatemia and post-parturient hemoglobinuria, subacute ruminal acidosis, RP, and metritis. Biomarkers are biological molecules distributed in blood, body fluids, or tissues that represent physiological or pathophysiological indicators of events,

Supratentorial arachnoid cyst management by cystoperitoneal shunt in a 1-year-old European cat.

Arachnoid cysts are defined as an accumulation of fluid within the arachnoid membrane. Feline intracranial arachnoid cysts are seldom reported, with only three cases in the veterinary literature. A 1-year-old male neutered European cat with a 24 h history of seizures was presented to the small animal neurology department at Vetagro Sup, Lyon. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a large intracranial arachnoid cyst ventral to the brain in the left temporal area. Cystoperitoneal shunt placement resulted in complete resolution of the cyst without recurrence (follow-up MRIs 3 weeks and 21 mon

Bone transport osteogenesis for treatment of canine osteomyelitis. A report of two cases.

Bone transport osteogenesis, as described by Ilizarov, has been used to resolve segmental bone defects in both human and veterinary patients. These defects are created when a large osseous tumour, sequestrum, or non-union fracture is resected. This report documents two cases in which the principle of bone transport osteogenesis was applied by utilising the Ilizarov technique to bridge large osseous defects resulting from debridement of an infected nonunion fracture (case 1) and debridement of a sequestrum (case 2). Defects were treated by transporting either a complete or a hemi-circumferentia

Treatment of canine hemangiosarcoma: 2000 and beyond.

Canine hemangiosarcoma (HSA) is an aggressive and malignant neoplasia with a grave prognosis. Surgery and chemotherapy have limited success in prolonging survival times and increasing quality of life in dogs with HSA. Advances in medical oncology are resulting in increased survival rates and a better quality of life for veterinary cancer patients. An understanding of mechanisms of metastasis has led to the development of new treatments designed to delay or inhibit tumor spread. Promising new treatment options include novel delivery systems (inhalation or intracavitary chemotherapy); use of imm

Local and regional anaesthesia in dogs and cats: Descriptions of specific local and regional techniques (Part 2).

Pain management in veterinary patients is a crucial component of appropriate patient care. Local anaesthetic drugs used in local and regional blockade can completely block the transmission of nociceptive impulses, decreasing both intra-operative nociception and postoperative pain, while decreasing the potential incidence of adverse effects that can be associated with systemic boluses of drugs. For efficacy and safety, this class of drugs is recommended as part of the analgesic protocol in the majority of surgical procedures and traumatic injuries. Numerous local and regional blocks are proven

Declawing of neonatal rabbits destined for use in animal biosafety level 4 containment studies.

To protect personnel and protective outerwear from damage by scratching, rabbits to be housed in an Animal Biosafety Level 4 (ABSL4) facility are declawed routinely. The objective of the study presented here was to establish a procedure for declawing all four feet of neonatal rabbits in preparation for use in ABSL4 studies. Combining procedures conducted in private veterinary practice to remove dewclaws of canine pups with those used to declaw cats, we declawed rabbit kits at 3 to 8 days of age. Declawing neonates was believed to be advantageous because they are non-ambulatory, have soft, cart

Use of bone callus as a source of bone graft for concurrent tibial malunion repair and contralateral pantarsal arthrodesis in a domestic shorthair cat-a case report.

A domestic shorthair cat, estimated 1 year old, was presented from a local rescue with traumatic injuries of unknown cause to both pelvic limbs. Radiographs revealed a left tibial malunion with marked callus formation and complex right tarsocrural joint injuries. A modified chipping technique was used to provide a source of autogenous bone graft from the callus for both the malunion correction and the contralateral pantarsal arthrodesis. Post-operative radiographs showed significant improvement in the left tibial alignment and adequate arthrodesis of the right tarsal joints. There was good fun

Pig Sedation and Anesthesia for Medical Research.

In clinical veterinary practice, proper training and expertise in anesthesia administration and monitoring are essential. Pigs are suitable experimental animals for many surgical techniques because they are similar in size to humans and have a short reproductive cycle. This makes them ideal for research concerning organ transplantation, cardiovascular surgery, and other procedures that require a large animal model. Sedation and premedication should be administered at the lowest dose to be effective with predictable results and reduced adverse effects, to ensure the safety of both the animal an

Large hydatidiform mole: an unusual finding in a calving cow.

CASE HISTORY: A 4-year-old Friesian cow was reported to be having difficulty calving. Palpation by farm staff identified a large mass in the uterus, but no calf. CLINICAL FINDINGS: Veterinary examination per vaginam identified a small calf and a large immobile mass. The calf was delivered by Caesarean section, but the mass could not be extracted during surgery. Biopsying the mass resulted in the loss of a large amount of fluid from it, but it remained immovable; overnight, the mass was expelled per vaginam. Gross and histological examination of the mass showed it to comprise multiple oedemato
