This study investigated relationships between bullet mass, velocity, kinetic energy (KE), and fracture propagation in flat bones. Sixty full metal jacketed 9-mm bullets of different masses were fired at pig (Sus scrofa) scapulae. A chronograph measured bullet velocity prior to impact. Fracture characteristics were documented using standard terminology, counted, and measured at the entrance aspect, exit aspect, and overall per specimen. Few significant relationships between ballistic and fracture variables were found across the ranges tested, suggesting possible threshold effects. Bullet mass i…

In last few years, a great effort has been made to understand genetic interrelationships of European and North American populations of giant liver fluke Fascioloides magna (Trematoda, Fasciolidae). In Europe, spatial distribution of this parasite is evidently dynamic and ongoing process since new F. magna populations have constantly been emerging. Most recently, occurrence of F. magna in red deer (Cervus elaphus), sika deer (Cervus nippon), fallow deer (Dama dama), roe deer (Capreolus capreolus), and wild boar (Sus scrofa) was reported from north-eastern Bavaria in Germany. Fascioloides magna …

A hemorrhagic-traumatic shock model in 20 domestic pigs (Sus scrofa) was used to evaluate the pharmacologic effect of methylprednisolone in preventing disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC). Pairs of animals were anesthetized with thiopental and both femoral arteries cannulated. Four ml/kg-1 of blood were withdrawn, frozen, thawed, and returned to the animal. One femoral artery cannula was connected to a blood pressure monitor for arterial systolic, diastolic, and mean pressures along with heart rate and ECG. The other catheter was used to bleed the animal down to and maintain a mean art…

Angelman syndrome is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by severe motor and cognitive deficits. It is caused by the loss of the maternally inherited allele of the imprinted ubiquitin-protein ligase E3A (UBE3A) gene. Rodent models of Angelman syndrome do not fully recapitulate all the symptoms associated with the condition and are limited as a preclinical model for therapeutic development. Here, we show that pigs (Sus scrofa) with a maternally inherited deletion of UBE3A (UBE3A-/+) have altered postnatal behaviors, impaired vocalizations, reduced brain growth, motor incoordination, and…

1. Serial frozen sections (10 microns thick) were cut parallel to the plane of the epithelium from skin, hard palate and gingiva of the pig (Sus scrofa), and beta-glucosidase activity was measured in each section. 2. In each of these tissues, there was a low constitutive level of beta-glucosidase activity in the inner portion of the epithelium, and a several-fold increase in activity was observed in the region of the stratum granulosum-stratum corneum interface. 3. The maximum specific activity of beta-glucosidase was significantly lower in gingiva (8 nmol substrate/hr/slice) than in epidermis…

The presence of fleas can have a great negative impact on the productivity and well-being of the animals, and can contribute towards propagation of causative pathogens of important diseases in animals and humans. Fleas and domestic pigs (Sus scrofa Linnaeus, 1758) are a known association. However, knowledge about fleas on pigs in Argentina is scarce. In this country, swine farming has become one of the main components of livestock production. This activity is primarily carried out by smallholder farmers, involving a potential risk to humans of acquiring pathogens. Our study was developed in Bu…

Neurological disorders are the leading cause of health loss worldwide. The growing number of patients suffering from such conditions calls for improved strategies for their prevention, diagnosis, and therapy. To better understand human pathologies, relevant models and methodologies must be made available. In this study, we focused on a biomedical model capable of recapitulating the complexity of human pathology, the pig (Sus scrofa). Brain tissue and cerebrospinal fluid samples from a transgenic minipig model of Huntington's disease were subjected to multiple extraction and fractionation steps…

Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV), a mosquito-borne virus, causes severe clinical symptoms in humans in the Asian-Pacific region, where it circulates in a primary transmission cycle among Culex tritaeniorhynchus mosquitoes, domestic swine (Sus scrofa domesticus), and wading birds. We report here an anomalous result that mosquito-borne JEV was detected in unfed host-questing ticks collected from the field in Japan. JEV genomic RNA was detected in four pools of Haemaphysalis flava nymphs collected in November and December 2019, and March 2020, when Cx. tritaeniorhynchus adults were not presumed …

This unit addresses several critical challenges associated with membrane protein crystallography by screening membrane proteins from Escherichia coli, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, and Sus scrofa cerebral tissue for biochemical properties favorable for crystallization. First, a tissue sample or cell pellet is obtained. The cells are isolated, washed, and then lysed either by sonication, bead beating, or manual homogenization. Membrane proteins are fractionated from the lysates by centrifugation and solubilized in a mild detergent suitable for crystallization, such as n-dodecyl-β-maltoside (DDM). D…

Here we study the occurrence of abnormalities on bone tissue composition and turnover mechanisms through the Pb-mediated disruption of vitamins A and D in wild ungulates living in a lead (Pb)-polluted mining area. Red deer (Cervus elaphus) and wild boar (Sus scrofa) from the mining area had significantly higher liver and bone Pb levels than controls, which were associated with the depletion of liver retinyl esters and the corresponding increase of free retinol levels both in deer and boar from the mining area. Pb-exposed adult deer had lower carbonate content in bone mineral than controls, whi…

To investigate the nationwide prevalence of hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection and to characterize HEV genomes among Japanese wild boars (Sus scrofa leucomystax), 578 boars captured in 25 prefectures from 2003 to 2010 were studied. Anti-HEV IgG was detected in 8.1%, and HEV RNA in 3.3% of boars. Among the 19 boar HEV isolates obtained from infected boars, 14 isolates (74%) were classified as genotype 3, 4 isolates (21%) as genotype 4, and the remaining isolate (wbJOY_06) was distantly related to all known HEV isolates of genotypes 1-4, differing by 18.4-25.0% and 18.0-24.3% within the 412-nucle…

At present few studies have been carried out on the distribution and incidence of Coxiella burnetii infection in wildlife. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the distribution of C. burnetii in the main wild species in the Basque Country (Northern Spain), such as carnivores, cervids, wild boar, lagomorphs and several species of birds. Tissues from a total of 601 animals and 340 adult ticks collected from them were analyzed by PCR. DNA of C. burnetii was detected in 5.1% of roe deer (Capreolus capreolus), 4.3% of wild boar (Sus scrofa), 9.1% of European hare (Lepus europaeus), a…

Twenty feral hogs (Sus scrofa) from a newly discovered population on Fort Riley Army Base (Kansas, USA) were shot and examined from November 1993 through February 1994 to assess the health of the population. The hogs were generally healthy, although serologic evidence indicated that some individuals had been exposed to parvovirus, enterovirus, and swine influenza. We found no indications of brucellosis, pseudorabies, or porcine respiratory and reproductive syndrome. Lung worms (Metastrongylus spp.), round worms (Ascaris suum), and whipworms (Trichuris suis) were found in nine, four and two of …

Sarcocystis miescheriana infection is an important cause of carcass condemnation during meat inspection. The infection can cause morbidity and mortality in domestic pigs. In this study, an 8-month-old finisher pig was presented to a local abattoir for slaughter. Multiple white nodular lesions affecting the meat were observed, resulting in the condemnation of the carcass. Consequently, half of the carcass was submitted to the necropsy diagnostic laboratory in the School of Veterinary Medicine for further evaluation. Grossly, all superficial and deep muscle groups had severe multifocal macrocyst

The domestication and artificial selection of wild boars have led to dramatic morphological and behavioral changes, especially in East Chinese (ECN) pigs. Here, we provide insights into the population structure and current genetic diversity of representative ECN pig breeds. We identify a 500-kb region containing six tooth development-relevant genes with almost completely different haplotypes between ECN pigs and Chinese wild boars or European domestic pigs. Notably, the c.195A>G missense mutation in exon 2 of AMBN may cause alterations in its protein structure associated with tusk degradation

This study examined the relationship between lung lesion severity and presence of antibodies of various respiratory pathogens, and the effects of lung lesion severity on growth performance, biochemical indicators, total aerobe counts, and carcass and meat quality indicators in total of 240 slaughter pigs originating from two farms with similar rearing conditions. Lung lesion severity was calculated based on the degree of pneumonia and pleurisy in slaughtered pigs. Two-step cluster analysis was used to place individual pigs to four clusters according to pneumonia and pleurisy scores: no lung le

Phoenixin (PNX) is a newly described peptide found in both neural and non-neural tissues. Until now, no attempts have been made to investigate the expression of PNX in the nervous system of animals other than laboratory rodents, in which an enzyme immunoassay revealed the highest quantity of the substance in the spinal cord. Since the domestic pig, due to its anatomical and histological resemblance to humans, is often used as an animal model in biomedical investigations, the present study was designed to examine PNX-immunoreactivity in the spinal cords of female pigs (n=5). The spinal cords we

When using artificial insemination in porcine reproduction, one of the most important requirements is the suitable quality of semen regarding its total motility (TM) and progressive motility (PM). Computer-assisted sperm analysis (CASA) is an appropriate method to analyse the quality of semen. Recently a portable instrument has been developed to help specialists in their everyday field work. In our study, semen quality was measured simultaneously by the portable device (Ongo) and a laboratory CASA system (Microptic) to compare TM and PM values obtained by these appliances at a concentration of
