The effects of ifenprodil on the activity of antidepressant drugs in the forced swim test in mice.

BACKGROUND: According to reports in the literature, more than 30% of depressive patients fail to achieve remission. Therapy with the conventional antidepressant drugs may induce the serious adverse reactions. Moreover, its benefits may be seen at least 2-4 weeks after the first dose. Therefore, the alternative strategies for prevention and treatment of depression are sought. The main aim of our study was to assess the effects of ifenprodil given at a non-active dose (10mg/kg) on the activity of antidepressant agents from diverse pharmacological groups. METHODS: The antidepressant-like effect

Evidence for the involvement of extinction-associated inhibitory learning in the forced swimming test.

The forced swimming test (FST) remains one of the most used tools for screening antidepressants in rodent models. Nonetheless, the nature of immobility, its main behavioral measure, is still a matter of debate. The present study took advantage of our recent finding that mice of the inbred DBA/2J strain require a functioning left dorsolateral striatum (DLS) to consolidate long-term memory of FST to test whether immobility is the outcome of stress-related learning. Infusion of the GABA-A agonist muscimol in the left DLS immediately after a single experience of FST prevented and infusion in the l…

The effect of fullerenes and functionalized fullerenes on Daphnia magna phototaxis and swimming behavior.

The effects of carbon fullerenes (C(60) ) on the environment is a growing concern as the use of nanotechnology continues to increase. Previo … phnia magna were also exposed to 545.4 µg/L C(60) , 545.6 µg/L fC(60) , and 829.3 µg/L fC(60) , and swimming movements were recorded. Fullerenes altered the vertical migration response of D. magna to the addition of food, but D. magna vertical position response to predator cues was similar for fullerenes and controls. In addition, D. magna reduced swimming …

Sink or swim? Bone density as a mechanism for buoyancy control in early cetaceans.

Previous analyses have shown that secondarily aquatic tetrapods, including whales, exhibit osteological adaptations to life in water as part … ing was that microstructural change predates gross anatomical shift in archaeocetes associated with swimming. Histological analysis shows that high bone density is an aquatic specialization that provides static buoyancy control (ballast) for animals living in shallow water, while low bone density is associated with dynamic buoyancy control for animals livi …

An outbreak of cryptosporidiosis in an urban swimming pool: why are such outbreaks difficult to detect?

OBJECTIVE: To describe an outbreak of Cryptosporidium gastroenteritis in a swimming pool in Melbourne in early 1998 that was not detected through routine surveillance, and discuss difficulties in identifying such outbreaks. METHODS: The Water Quality Study (WQS) was a large community-based study of gastroenteritis. Following suspicion of an outbreak of cryptosporidiosis within the study group, due to pool "X", a nested case control study was performed. Each case of Cryptosporidium gastroenteritis was matched with six controls and data from weekly Health Diaries from the WQS were reviewed. The…

Comparison of tetrahydroaminoacridine and physostigmine on scopolamine-induced free swim behavior in the rat.

The effect of acetylcholinesterase inhibitors on free swim behavior in rats pretreated with scopolamine (0.32 mg/kg, IP) was examined. Long-Evans rats received a single 5-min testing trial in a 1.5 m black swimming pool, and swim distance in three concentric annulus corridors (peripheral, middle, and inner) and the number of body-turn transitions (greater than 45 degrees) were measured. Physostigmine (1.0 mg/kg, IP) increased swim distance in the middle and inner annulus corridors, compared to tetrahydroaminoacridine (2.0 mg/kg and 10 mg/kg, IP) and scopolamine alone (control) (Ps less than 0.…

Clonidine as a sensitizing agent in the forced swimming test for revealing antidepressant activity.

The forced swimming test (FST) in mice has failed to predict antidepressant activity for drugs having beta adrenoreceptor agonist activity and for serotonin uptake inhibitors. We investigated the potential for clonidine to render the FST sensitive to antidepressants by using a behaviorally inactive dose of this agent (0.1 mg/kg). All antidepressants studied (tricyclics, 5-HT uptake inhibitors, iprindole, mianserin, viloxazine, trazodone) showed either activity at lower doses or activity at previously inactive doses. The effect appeared specific because it did not appear with drugs other than a…

The role of the mesolimbic dopaminergic system in the desipramine effect in the forced swimming test.

The effects of sulpiride isomers injected into the nucleus accumbens on the anti-immobility activity of desipramine in rats were studied to clarify the role of dopamine receptors. (-)-Sulpiride 100 ng/0.5 microliters injected bilaterally into the nucleus accumbens 5 min before testing reduced the effect of a 7-day treatment with 10 mg/kg per day desipramine in the swimming test but 5 micrograms/0.5 microliter (+)-sulpiride injected in the same area had no effect. Fluphenazine, 5 micrograms/0.5 microliter, or 6-hydroxydopamine-induced depletion of dopamine in the nucleus accumbens also reduced …

Influence of naloxone on antidepressant drug effects in the forced swimming test in mice.

The influence of naloxone on the effects of several antidepressant drugs, atropine and caffeine was studied in the forced swimming test in mice. Naloxone itself has no effect in this test, but significantly reduces that of two tricyclic antidepressants, clomipramine (20 and 30 mg/kg) and desipramine (20 and 30 mg/kg). Except for clorgyline at the high dose of 60 mg/kg, no significant reduction of activity by naloxone was observed with other antidepressants (pargyline, nomifensine and mianserin), nor with caffeine and atropine. These results are discussed in terms of the pharmacological charact…

On peripheral control mechanisms acting on the central pattern generators for swimming in the dogfish.

When sinusoidal movements were artificially imposed on the tail region of the curarized spinal dogfish during "fictive locomotion' the coordinated burst pattern recorded in the ventral roots was effectively entrained to follow movement frequencies above as well as below the resting rate. The entrainment was characterized by: (1) a broad range of effective movement frequencies and amplitudes (down to a few degrees); (2) frequency-dependent timing of entrained bursts to the movement; (3) constant burst durations at low and moderate frequencies; (4) incomplete entrainment in response to high or l

The use of self-modeling to improve the swimming performance of spina bifida children.

The use of edited videotape replay (which showed only "positive" behaviors) to improve the water skills of three spina bifida children, aged 5 to 10 years was examined. A multiple baseline across subjects design was used, and behavioral changes were observed to occur in close association with intervention. One child was given successive reapplications of videotaped self-modeling with continuing improvements. It appears that a useful practical technique has been developed.

Swimming is superior to running in inducing physiological cardiac hypertrophy and enhancing myocardial performance.

Aerobic exercise training (AET) can induce cardiac hypertrophy, but the specific adaptive response for different types of AET remains unclear. We evaluated nonsingular cardiac remodeling in rats through running (RT) and swimming (ST) training at approximately 75% of VO₂max. Male Wistar rats (8-10 weeks old; ~ 250 g) were divided into untrained (UT), RT, and ST groups. The RT and ST were performed five days a week, once daily for 60 min for eight weeks. Cardiopulmonary fitness was assessed by measuring maximal oxygen consumption and swimming time to exhaustion. Echocardiography evaluated left v…

Understanding symptoms of swimming-induced pulmonary oedema through the patient's perspective: a qualitative approach.

OBJECTIVES: Swimming-induced pulmonary oedema (SIPE)d is a potentially fatal condition that can develop in healthy individuals during swimming. Detailed descriptions of episode onset to resolution are lacking but needed to facilitate early recognition and support swimmer safety. We aimed to explore personal accounts of SIPE, focusing on the symptoms. DESIGN: Qualitative descriptive exploratory study using semi-structured interviews. METHODS: We subjected interview data from seventeen individuals who have experienced SIPE to thematic analysis. Sample size was guided by the concept of informat…

Power generated by underwater strokes in front crawl swimming and its kinematic contributing factors.

This study aimed to determine power generated by underwater strokes in front crawl swimming and discuss the kinematic contributing factors in upper-body segmental rotations to that power generated by underwater strokes. For 14 male swimmers performing front crawl swimming at maximal effort, the kinematics of the upper-body segments and hydrodynamic forces acting on the stroking hands were computed. Power generated by underwater strokes, its elements and components representing each segmental rotation were computed as the dot product of the force exerted on the water by the hands and hand veloc…

Regulation of Reproduction and Swimming Ability in the Male Marsh Rice Rat (Oryzomys palustris).

Photoperiod and melatonin regulate reproduction in mammals. The rice rat (Oryzomys palustris) is reproductively photoperiodic and on a long photoperiod responds to melatonin administration with inhibited reproduction. I examined whether photoperiod, melatonin, and the removal of gonadal steroids via castration affected growth, reproduction, pelage, and swimming ability. Juvenile males were housed on 14L:10D or 11L:13D and at 68 days of age rice rats were weighed, allowed to swim for 10 minutes while being videotaped to quantify swimming and floating times, and then reweighed. One day later, th…

Colonial architecture modulates the speed and efficiency of multi-jet swimming in salp colonies.

Salps are marine pelagic tunicates with a complex life cycle including a solitary and colonial stage. Salp colonies are composed of asexually budded individuals that coordinate their swimming by multi-jet propulsion. Colonies develop into species-specific architectures with distinct zooid orientations. These distinct colonial architectures vary in how frontal area scales with the number of zooids in the colony. Here, we address how differences in frontal area drive differences in swimming speed and the relationship between swimming speed and cost of transport in salps. We (1) compared swimming…

Swimming-Induced Pulmonary Edema in a Member Participating in a Special Tactics Selection Course.

BACKGROUND: Swimming-induced pulmonary edema (SIPE), also called immersion pulmonary edema, is a form of exertional pulmonary edema associated with swimming and/or water immersion without aspiration. Most case reports on SIPE feature young, healthy patients who were scuba-diving, surface swimming, snorkeling, or breath-hold diving before experiencing symptoms of dyspnea, chest pain/tightness, cough, and hemoptysis. The incidence of SIPE is thought to be between 0.4-5%. Although symptoms typically resolve with oxygenation and ventilation, SIPE can be fatal, making recognition of SIPE crucial, e…
