Despite numerous cases of human infection with Streptococcus suis worldwide, human disease is rarely diagnosed in North America. We studied 73 swine-exposed and 67 non-swine-exposed US adults for antibodies to S. suis serotype 2. Serologic data suggest that human infection with S. suis occurs more frequently than currently documented.

We estimated the Taenia solium swine cysticercosis risk gradient surrounding tapeworm carriers in seven rural communities in Peru. At baseline, the prevalences of taeniasis by microscopy and swine cysticercosis by serology were 1.2% (11 of 898) and 30.8% (280 of 908), respectively. A heritable ventricular septal defect (VSD) was found in a strain of Yucatan miniature swine. The defect was determined to be a high membranous VSD analogous in anatomic location to the most common from of VSD in humans. As I write this review, we are in the midst of the 2009 influenza A (H1N1) pandemic. The extent and impact of this pandemic is still unknown. Although daily reports on confirmed cases and deaths provide a constant stream of detailed information, it is not possible to predict with any degree of precision the impact the outbreak will have in society in general or on the life insurance industry in particular.1 The epidemiology of such disease outbreaks has been likened to a jigsaw puzzle, and we are now at the stage where the picture is intriguing even if we are not sure what we are seeing.2.

Zoonotic meningitis by Streptococcus suis has been described occasionally in Chile and linked to pig farmers in the south of the country. We report a female case that developed acute bacterial meningitis by this agent, two days after handling a piece of raw swine meat. She did not participate on swine breeding nor visited farms. In Norway, no published data on seroprevalence of hepatitis E virus (HEV) in humans and swine exists. Serum samples from blood donors, veterinarians, swine farm workers and swine were analysed by ELISA to estimate the seroprevalence of HEV in Norway and to investigate the association between direct contact with swine and HEV seroprevalence in humans. The seroprevalence of HEV IgG antibodies was 30% (24/79) in farm workers, 13% (21/163) in veterinarians, 14% (162/1200) in blood donors and 90% (137/153) in swine.
