Sympathetic over activity in the etiology of hypertension of obstructive sleep apnea.

Beginning with modest clinical observations in 1984, a picture has evolved suggesting that sympathetic nervous system over activity may be responsible in part for the elevated blood pressure seen in obstructive sleep apnea patients. Early studies of urinary and plasma catecholamines indirectly suggested sympathetic over activity carried to daytime, non-apneic conditions. Later intra-neuronal recordings of muscle sympathetic nerve activity directly demonstrated both acute and diumal (non-apneic) sympathetic over activity. Most importantly, diurnal sympathetic over activity has been shown to dim…

The role of catecholamines in clinical medicine.

The sympathetic nervous system is of major importance for the regulation of several physiological functions. Drugs which inhibit the actions of catecholamines and adrenergic drugs are used in the treatment of many clinical disorders. The potential role of catecholamines in a number of human diseases has, however, until recent years been studied to a limited extent only due to lack of methods for quantitation of sympathetic nervous activity. After the development of enzymatic isotope-derivative assays, reliable measurements of noradrenaline and adrenaline in plasma became available. Studies in …

Neuromodulating Influence of Two Electroacupuncture Treatments on Heart Rate Variability, Stress, and Vagal Activity.

Introduction: Although the clinical use of electro-acupuncture is widespread, the neuromodulating influence of various applied frequencies i … e reduction in sympathetic stress with subsequent improvement in vagal tone, and HRV. This positive sympathetic nervous system deactivation from LFEA application shown in this study could have a major impact on other pathologies related to human health and longevity. Further cohort studies are warranted to determine the validity of these outcomes.

Cardiorenal axis and arrhythmias: Will renal sympathetic denervation provide additive value to the therapeutic arsenal?

Disruption of sympathetic tone may result in the occurrence or maintenance of cardiac arrhythmias. Multiple arrhythmic therapies that interv … e expedient. Recently, renal sympathetic denervation (RSD) has been subject of research for various sympathetic nervous system-related diseases. By its presumed afferent and efferent sympatholytic effects, RSD might indirectly attenuate sympathetic outflow via the brain to the heart but might also reduce systemic catecholamine excretion and might therefore reduce catecholam …

The role of the central nervous system in chronic congestive heart failure.

Even though congestive heart failure is extremely common, the mechanisms responsible for the clinical manifestations remain a puzzle. The ce … hycardia, sweating, dermal pallor, and tension and anxiety in patients with CHF reflect generalized sympathetic nervous system activity and the influence of the central and autonomic nervous systems on the clinical syndrome of CHF.

We consider the following possibilities: (a) differences in the sympathetic nervous system between Parkinson's disease and multiple system atrophy are more subtle in organs other than the heart; (b) the cause of MIBG uptake reduction by the heart in Parkinson's disease involves factors in addition to sympathetic nervous system damage; and …

[The autonomic nervous system and disorders of heart rhythm. I].

The authors give an account of recent findings on the modulating action of the autonomous nervous system on electrophysiological properties of the heart and on mechanisms by which the vegetative nervous system participates in the development of disorders of the cardiac rhythm. In the development of arrhythmias, in particular the importance of the sympathetic nerve is emphasized. The relationship of stimulation of the sympathetic nerve and the development of arrhythmias may be conditioned: by its great activity, uneven distribution of sympathetic innervation and abnormal reaction of the damaged

Sympathetic overactivity in hypertension. A moving target.

Considerable progress has been made in our understanding of the role of the nervous system in human hypertension. The evidence for a widespread autonomic abnormality in the early phases of hypertension is overwhelming and excessive sympathetic activity is consistently present in such patients since their childhood. The enhanced sympathetic tone in hypertension is associated with the metabolic syndrome of insulin resistance and dyslipidemia. Multiple mechanisms by which sympathetic overactivity could cause both hypertension and the metabolic syndrome have been documented. Furthermore, the exces

Integration of renal sensory afferents at the level of the paraventricular nucleus dictating sympathetic outflow.

The sympathetic nervous system has been identified as a major contributor to the pathophysiology of chronic heart failure (CHF) and other diseases such as hypertension and diabetes, both in experimental animal models and patients. The kidneys have a dense afferent sensory innervation positioning it to be the origin of multimodal input to the central nervous system. Afferent renal nerve (ARN) signals are centrally integrated, and their activation results in a general increase in sympathetic tone, which is directed toward the kidneys as well as other peripheral organs innervated by the sympathet…

Sympathetic innervation of the temporomandibular joint modulates local hyperalgesia and IL-6 levels in zymosan-induced inflammatory pain.

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is critical for essential orofacial functions including chewing and speaking. Chronic pain and dysfunction of the TMJ and its associated structures are classified as temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) and represent a significant public health burden. However, the precise neurobiological mechanisms driving these conditions are still unclear. The autonomic nervous system, in particular the sympathetic nervous system, plays a modulatory role in joint homeostasis, inflammation, and pain. This study investigated the sympathetic innervation of the rat TMJ and its fu…

Research Progress of Autonomic Nerve Regulation in the Treatment of Myocardial Infarction.

The autonomic nervous system imbalance caused by the overactivation of the sympathetic nerve and the weakened activity of the parasympathetic nerve is closely related to the occurrence and development of myocardial infarction.Autonomic nerve regulation is a new therapeutic approach aiming at inhibiting sympathetic activity and increasing parasympathetic activity. It encompasses magnetic nerve stimulation, optogenetic neuromodulation, and microinjection of botulinum toxin, which could promote the rebalance of the autonomic nervous system, thereby curbing the deterioration of the cardiac function and

Multi-Organ Increase in Norepinephrine Levels after Central Leptin Administration and Diet-Induced Obesity.

Autonomic innervation is important to regulate homeostasis in every organ of the body. The sympathetic nervous system controls several organs associated with metabolism and reproduction, including adipose tissue, the liver, and the ovaries. The sympathetic nervous system is controlled within the central nervous system by neurons located in the hypothalamus, which in turn are regulated by hormones like leptin. Leptin action in the hypothalamus leads to increased sympathetic activity in the adipose tissue. In this short report, we propose that leptin action in the brain also controls the sympath…

[Acute autonomic neuropathy and the other related diseases].

In 1969, Young et al. described a patient with an acquired, pure pan-dysautonomia of unknown etiology, involving both the sympathetic and the parasympathetic nervous systems without other neurological manifestations. Since then, a number of similar cases have been described. More recently, reports have appeared of predominantly cholinergic dysautonomia, of dysautonomia associated with infection, and of dysautonomia with other impairment of nervous function. As an etiology, immunological disorder has been suggested but the precise mechanism has not been clarified. By accumulating more cases, a …

Renal autonomic dynamics in hypertension: how can we evaluate sympathetic activity for renal denervation?

This review explores the various pathophysiological factors influencing antihypertensive effects, involving the regulation of vascular resistance, plasma volume, cardiac function, and the autonomic nervous system, emphasizing the interconnected processes regulating blood pressure (BP). The kidney's pivotal role in BP control and its potential contribution to hypertension is complicated but important to understand the effective mechanisms of renal denervation (RDN), which may be a promising treatment for resistant hypertension. Excessive stimulation of the sympathetic nervous system or the reni…

Increased regional sympathetic nervous activity in human hypertension: causes and consequences.

Biochemical, electrophysiological, pharmacological and haemodynamic findings provide evidence for the existence of sympathetic nervous system activation in some patients with primary human hypertension, particularly younger ones. Sympathetic activation has been shown to involve neural outflows to the heart, kidneys and skeletal muscle. This sympathetic nervous stimulation, the cause of which remains obscure, appears to be commonly important in the pathogenesis of the hypertension. Whether the sympathetic overactivity has adverse effects in addition to its effect on blood pressure, by promoting…
