Dissociable neurocognitive mechanisms of state and trait anxiety in working memory: Threat-induced alterations in decision dynamics and attenuation of large-scale network reconfiguration.

Trait and state anxiety represent dissociable dimensions that influence working memory (WM) through distinct neurocognitive mechanisms. However, how each dimension modulates WM performance and large-scale brain network interactions under threat remains poorly understood. This study disentangled their respective contributions by integrating an interference-suppression WM task with a threat-of-shock paradigm, complemented by hierarchical drift-diffusion modeling (HDDM) and functional network connectivity (FNC) analyses. Threat-induced state anxiety robustly accelerated reaction times across all

Reduced attentional engagement contributes to deficits in prefrontal inhibitory control in schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Problems with the voluntary control of behavior, such as those leading to increased antisaccade errors, are accepted as evidence of prefrontal dysfunction in schizophrenia. We previously reported that speeded prosaccade responses, i.e., shorter response latencies for automatic shifts of attention to visual targets, were associated with higher antisaccade error rates in schizophrenia. This suggests that dysregulation of automatic attentional processes may contribute to disturbances in prefrontally mediated control of voluntary behavior. METHODS: Twenty-four antipsychotic-naïve schi

A 12-week exercise programme has a positive effect on everyday executive function in young people with Down syndrome: a pilot non-randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Exercise has the potential to reduce cognitive decline in people with Down syndrome by maximising their cognitive function. The aim of the study was to determine the effect of regular exercise on cognitive functioning in young people with Down syndrome. METHOD: People with Down syndrome were eligible if aged between 13 and 35 years and enrolled to participate in an exercise programme (called FitSkills). The intervention was a 12-week community-based exercise programme completed with a student mentor. Outcomes were assessed before (week 0) and immediately after (week 13) the interv

Effects of nicotinic therapies on attention and executive functions in chronic low-dose MPTP-treated monkeys.

Chronic administration of low doses of the neurotoxin MPTP to nonhuman primates induces cognitive deficits similar to those seen in early Parkinson's disease (PD) patients, without the confounding effect of significant motor impairment. The present study assessed the extent to which specific attentional and central executive deficits in chronic low dose (CLD) MPTP-treated monkeys could be modified by nicotinic therapies. Four adult male rhesus monkeys were trained to perform attention and executive function tasks and were then administered low doses of MPTP (dose range: 0.025-0.1 mg/kg, i.v.)

Understanding local perspectives on child mental health to strengthen school-based interventions in Darjeeling, India.

BackgroundChild mental health needs in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) often go unmet due to a scarcity of specialists. In Darjeeling, West Bengal, India, Tealeaf (Teachers Leading the Frontlines), a task-shifting model in which teachers serve as lay counselors, has shown early promise. We explored stakeholders' culturally held beliefs about causes of child mental health concerns to contextualize Tealeaf's ongoing trial.MethodsWe conducted twelve semi-structured interviews (March-April 2022) with purposively selected principals, teachers, and caregivers. Using qualitative description,

The neural substrate and underlying mechanisms of executive control fluctuations in primates.

Trial-by-trial alterations in response time have been linked to fluctuations of executive control and transient lapses of attention. Here, we report remarkable homologies in performance-dependent fluctuations of response time between humans and monkeys. We examined the effects of selective bilateral lesions in four frontal regions on control fluctuations in the context of a rule-shifting task. Lesions within orbitofrontal cortex (OFC), but not within superior-lateral prefrontal cortex, significantly exaggerated the performance-dependent fluctuations of control and prevented its restoration fol

Offering alphabet support in the Trail Making Test: Increasing validity for participants with insufficient automatization of the alphabet.

Insufficient automatization of the alphabet may falsely impair performance on the Trail Making Test among persons with dyslexia or persons not accustomed to the Latin alphabet. We analyze whether writing the alphabet on top of the test sheet changes performance in these risk groups, and whether alphabet support reduces the complexity of the set-shifting task.One-hundred and seventy patients referred to neuropsychological assessment participated and were given both a TMT-version offering alphabet support and the D-KEFS TMT. The discrepancy between the D-KEFS subtask where lines are drawn succes

Attention to Automatic Movements in Parkinson's Disease: Modified Automatic Mode in the Striatum.

We investigated neural correlates when attending to a movement that could be made automatically in healthy subjects and Parkinson's disease (PD) patients. Subjects practiced a visuomotor association task until they could perform it automatically, and then directed their attention back to the automated task. Functional MRI was obtained during the early-learning, automatic stage, and when re-attending. In controls, attention to automatic movement induced more activation in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), anterior cingulate cortex, and rostral supplementary motor area. The motor corte

Impaired cognitive functions in adult-onset primary cranial cervical dystonia.

BACKGROUND: Adult-onset primary dystonia is thought to be a purely motor disorder. Nevertheless, several studies provided evidence that sensory and psychiatric disturbances may contribute to the clinical spectrum of of dystonia, whereas evidence supporting cognitive impairment is still limited. METHODS: A set of neuropsychological tests was administered to non depressed, non demented patients with cranial-cervical dystonia and healthy control subjects. The test battery included n-Back Task, Wechsler Memory Scale, Trail Making Test version A and B, and Wisconsin Card Sorting Test. RESULTS: As

When faces signal danger: event-related potentials to emotional facial expressions in animal phobics.

Attentional bias research indicates that specific phobics prioritize the processing of disorder-relevant stimuli, although the time course of attentional allocation to the phobic threat remains unclear. The present study employed event-related potentials (ERPs) to investigate whether a processing bias also exists towards specific facial expressions that are able to signal potential phobic cues in the environment. Fifteen women with snake phobia and 15 healthy controls performed an attention-shifting task in which angry, fearful, disgusted and neutral faces were presented as emotional cues. ERP

Noradrenergic, but not cholinergic, deafferentation of prefrontal cortex impairs attentional set-shifting.

Both norepinephrine and acetylcholine have been shown to be critically involved in mediating attention but there remains debate about whether they serve similar or unique functions. Much of what is known about the role of these neurochemicals in cognition is based on manipulations done at the level of the cell body but these findings are difficult to reconcile with data regarding the unique contribution of cortical subregions, e.g. the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, to attention. In the current study, we directly compared the effects of noradrenergic and cholinergic deafferentation of the rat

Synaptic Mitochondrial Oxidative Stress Contributes to Individual Variability in Age-Related Cognitive Inflexibility in Mice.

Aging is associated with impairments in cognitive flexibility, a key executive function supported by the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC), yet the biological mechanisms underlying individual variability in age-related decline remain poorly understood. Here we investigated behavioral, ultrastructural, and proteomic correlates of cognitive inflexibility in mice across aging. Using a touchscreen-based attentional set-shifting task, we observed substantial individual variability in cognitive inflexibility among aged C57BL/6J mice. Volume electron microscopy of the mPFC revealed age-related reductio

Learned Irrelevance, Perseveration, and Cognitive Aging: A Cross-Sectional Study of Cognitively Unimpaired Older Adults.

The effect of natural aging on physiologic mechanisms that regulate attentional set-shifting represents an area of high interest in the study of cognitive function. In visual discrimination learning, reward contingency changes in categorization tasks impact individual performance, which is constrained by attention-shifting costs. Perseveration (PE) and learned irrelevance (LI) are viewed as two different mechanisms that shape responses to stimuli, which are predicated on the shift in stimulus form. To date, only studies examining patients with Parkinson's disease have provided some insight int

Effects of Hormonal Contraception Use on Cognitive Functions in Patients With Bulimia Nervosa.

Background: Growing evidences indicate that sex hormones have an effect on cognitive functions, and that Bulimia Nervosa (BN) is associated with cognitive impairment. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of hormonal contraception (HC) use on four cognitive functions that are impaired in patients with BN. Methods: This retrospective exploratory study included 103 women with a diagnosis of BN based on the DSM-5 criteria. Their age ranged from 15 to 45 years, and 46.6% were taking HC (oral, transdermal, or intrauterine). Cognition was assessed with the d2 test (attention), Iowa gambl

Object-based attention and visual area LO.

We investigated the neural basis of so-called "object-based attention" by examining patient D.F., who has visual form agnosia caused by bilateral damage to the lateral occipital (LO) area of the ventral visual stream. We tested D.F.'s object-based attention in two ways. In the first experiment, we used a spatial cueing procedure to compare the costs associated with shifting attention within versus between two separate outline figures. D.F. did not show the normal advantage of within-object over between-object attention shifts. In the second experiment, we used a complementary paradigm in which

Rainbow Wash or Rainbow Revolution? Dynamic Stakeholder Engagement for SDG-Driven Responsible Innovation.

STUDY AIMS: Increasing clinical complexity, rising admission volumes and shorter hospital stays have intensified demands on internal medicine residents. A 2015 time and motion study at our institution showed that residents spent nearly half of their day on computer work, with frequent task-switching and limited patient contact. These findings prompted organisational reforms to redistribute workload and improve workflow. We aimed to assess how resident time allocation changed after organisational reforms. METHODS: We performed a before-and-after time and motion study in the division of interna

Task-Based Mapping of Compensatory Strategies and Movement Kinematics After Stroke: A Systematic Scoping Review.

Although compensatory motor strategies are widely described after stroke, there is still no structured synthesis integrating their kinematic characteristics across core functional tasks. This scoping review aimed to map compensatory strategies and movement kinematics in mobility, postural control, and upper-limb tasks after stroke. The review followed the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology and was registered on the Open Science Framework. Ten databases were searched through August 2024. Studies including individuals post-stroke that used motion analysis to characterize compensatory strategies

The Comparison of Human and Machine Performance in Object Recognition.

Deep learning models have advanced rapidly, leading to claims that they now match or exceed human performance. However, such claims are often based on closed-set conditions with fixed labels, extensive supervised training, and do not considering differences between the two systems. Recent findings also indicate that some models align more closely with human categorisation behaviour, whereas other studies argue that even highly accurate models diverge from human behaviour. Following principles from comparative psychology and imposing similar constraints on both systems, this study investigates
