The extensor tendon apparatus is less involved with tenosynovial disease than the flexor tendons. It is, however, frequently affected by bony erosions at the wrist and synovial disease of the metacarpophalangeal joints with consequent loss of function due to rupture or dislocation. The causes of rupture have been discussed and the means of treatment described. Details of metacarpophalangeal deformities of the fingers and thumb, and their management are given in Chapters 5, 8 and 9.

An epidermoid cyst in the flexor superficialis tendon of the right middle finger of a child limited extension of the finger by preventing the distal gliding of the tendon at the inlet of the flexor tendon sheath. Full extension was regained by excising the tendon.

BACKGROUND: The main treatment choices for chronic extensor pollicis longus (EPL) tendon rupture consists of tendon transfer and tendon repair with tendon graft. Tendon transfer with extensor indicis proprius (EIP) is currently considered the gold standard treatment which yields predictable and satisfactory results, but potentially compromises the strength of independent extension of the index finger. We propose our method of using a partial extensor carpi radialis longus (ECRL) tendon graft to repair chronic EPL tendon tears.
METHODS: The distal stump of the EPL was located through an incisi

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinical therapeutic effects of anchors, peroneus brevis tendon augmentation and plantaris muscle tendon covering on the reconstruction of achilles tendon rupture caused by corticosteroids injection.
METHODS: From March 2005 to April 2010, the clinical data of 10 patients with acute achilles tendon rupture repaired with suture anchors, peroneus brevis tendon augmentation and plantaris muscle tendon covering were retrospectively analyzed. The achilles tendon rupture was caused by corticosteroids injection. There were 8 males and 2 females with a mean age of (46.80

There are many high-level studies comparing nonoperative treatment, open repair, and minimally invasive repair for Achilles tendon ruptures. This article summarizes the most up-to-date literature comparing these treatment options. The authors' preferred protocol for nonoperative treatment is discussed. Preferred techniques for open repair and chronic Achilles repair are discussed with reference to the literature.

Flexor tendon injuries are complex, and management of these injuries requires consideration of the surgical timing, injury location, approach, and soft tissue handling. Complications are common, including adhesions, tendon rupture, infection, and a high reoperation rate for zone 2 repairs. Special considerations are given to chronic ruptures, concomitant fractures, and pediatric cases. We discuss current concepts that may improve patient outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Extensor tendon injuries are a common condition that hand surgeons must be prepared to treat. The area of extensor tendon injury can traditionally be broken down into 9 zones. Physical examination is the best way to diagnose extensor tendon injury with a loss of active extension in the injured digit. The tenodesis effect may be utilized to aid in diagnosis: wrist flexion should cause passive extension at the metacarpophalangeal, proximal interphalangeal, and distal interphalangeal joints if the extensor tendon is in continuity.
DESCRIPTION: Repair of extensor tendon injuries depen

The quadriceps tendon often ruptures spontaneously without trauma, frequently following an eccentric load on the tendon (walking down stairs) in the case of a previous degenerative injury. Rupture after endoprosthetic knee replacement is a special etiological case. Predominantly men between 50 and 65 years of age are affected. Clinical signs are suprapatellar hematoma and the inability to actively straighten the knee. A typical examination finding is the "suprapatellar gap sign". Ultrasonography is the diagnostic imaging modality of first choice as it can be reliably visualize the rupture and

Triceps tendon injuries are an uncommon clinical entity poorly described in the literature. This review discusses the spectrum of pathology, effective diagnosis, nonsurgical treatment, surgical treatment, rehabilitation, and surgical complications of triceps tendon injuries. Management of triceps tendinopathies depends on the mechanism of injury and the patient's motor examination. Triceps tendinopathies and partial tendon tears with intact strength can be managed conservatively with rest, ice, immobilization, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and physical therapy. If conservative manageme

The rupture of the Achilles tendon is the most frequent tendon rupture in humans and it is associated with increasing incidence. The main risk factor is intrinsic degeneration of the tendon. During the rupture the person feels a whiplash or dagger thrust-like pain, followed by restricted walking ability and decreased plantar flexion of the ankle. The positive Simmond/Thompson test and a palpable dent above the tendon rupture are pathognomical. Diagnostically, ultrasound of the tendon and lateral x-ray of the calcaneus (bony pull-out of the tendon insertion) are necessary. Regarding correct ind

BACKGROUND: Rheumatoid arthritis is found in approximately 2 % of the total population in Europe and the peak incidence of the disease is during the fourth and fifth decades of life. In approximately 15 % the first symptoms of the disease occur at the level of the foot and ankle. If the early stage-dependent therapy with pharmaceuticals fails isolated surgery of the tendons (e.g. tenosynovectomy) and reconstructive surgery including the tendons (e.g. tendon transfer and tendon readaptation) are performed to keep the patient mobile.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this article is to give an overview of…

Flexible forefoot deformities, such as hallux varus, clawed hallux, hammer toes, and angular lesser toe deformities, can be treated effectively with tendon transfers. Based on the presentation of the flexible forefoot deformities, tendon transfers can be used as the primary treatment or as adjuncts to bony procedures when there are components of fixed deformities.

Tendon injuries are the second most common injuries of the hand and therefore an important topic in trauma and orthopedic patients. Most injuries are open injuries to the flexor or extensor tendons, but less frequent injuries, e.g., damage to the functional system tendon sheath and pulley or dull avulsions, also need to be considered. After clinical examination, ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging have proved to be important diagnostic tools. Tendon injuries mostly require surgical repair, dull avulsions of the distal phalanges extensor tendon can receive conservative therapy. Injuries o…
