Large supratentorial infarctions play an important role in early mortality and severe disability from stroke. However, data concerning these types of infarction are scarce. Correlates of the size of infarcts, the time from stroke to death, and the mechanisms of death were studied in 77 consecutive patients who died from infarction in the middle cerebral artery territory. The area of infarcts was assessed by planimetry on schemas of representative brain levels and the results were expressed as a ratio of infarcted area on the whole MCA territory. No clear relationship was found between the size of infarcts in the MCA territory, and any of the characteristics of the patients, but extensive infarcts were more frequent when the internal carotid artery was occluded. From November 1990 to June 1991, 33 cases of acute melioidosis were diagnosed in tropical Northern Territory, Australia during an exceptionally wet monsoon. Eighteen (55%) were alcoholic, 16 (48%) diabetic and only 4 (12%, all survivors) had no risk factors. The clinical and MRI features were correlated in five cases of infarction in the territory of the anterior inferior cerebellar artery. The lateral portion of the pons area was affected in four cases, the middle cerebellar peduncle in two, and the cerebellar hemisphere in three. The lesion was restricted to the cerebellar hemisphere in one patient. In no case did the clinical features conform to the classical description.

Clinical features of anterior choroidal artery (ACA) territory infarct are hemiplegia, hemi-anaesthesia and homonymous hemianopia. Two axial arteries were found, and both the fasciocutaneous flap and the fascial flap could be elevated with the two arteries on the posterior forearm. Eighty-eight consecutive patients referred to a neurosurgical Department (63 men and 25 women) aged from 14 to 68 years, with cerebral ischemia in the carotid territory were subjected to M-mode and two-dimensional echocardiography, carotid angiography and assessment of risk factors. Pathomorphology of the infection caused by Powassan virus strains isolated in the Primorsky Kray was studied in white mice. The central nervous system of the animals sacrificed in the time course of the infectious process was studied by light and luminescent microscopy. Severe diffuse inflammatory-degenerative changes were found in the brain and spinal cord. Immunofluorescence revealed cytoplasmic localization of the virus antigen in neurons, glial and connective tissue cells.

Attempts were undertaken to study the character of the distribution of I. ricinus over a large territory. Methodic principles of the land survey of arthropods distribution and laboratory processing of its results, that were used before for I. persulcatus, were found to be quite suitable for I. ricinus. It was established that hungry adults of I. ricinus have at least three types of the distribution throughout the forests of Lithuania. Types of the distribution can be ascertained by the results of the record of I. ricinus nymphs with a flag.
