RISE for recovery after acute whiplash injury: protocol for a randomised feasibility trial of a clinician-supported SMS-based behavioural intervention.

INTRODUCTION: Whiplash-associated disorders (WADs) are the most common and costly consequence of road traffic injury (RTI). Providing early and effective treatment is a healthcare priority; however, current guideline-based care which focuses on education and physiotherapy-led exercise does not routinely address the psychosocial effects of trauma, and access to early integrated treatment is limited. This study aims to evaluate the feasibility of delivering and evaluating recovery, information, support and empowerment (RISE), a co-designed short message service-based intervention integrating psy

Behavioral design for reducing alcohol consumption in aging: A mobile messaging randomized controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: There is a need for efficient and effective assessment, prevention, and intervention for alcohol use among older adults (ages ≥50) to reduce health risks and encourage healthy aging. However, most digital interventions for addiction are targeted to and evaluated among adults younger than 50. Given the growing digital literacy of older adults with mobile technologies, mobile messaging offers a promising, low-burden channel to deliver accessible behavioral interventions. METHODS: We designed a mobile text messaging program tailored to older adults that includes daily self-tracking…

Harnessing the power of mobile and messaging apps for risk communication and intervention during the COVID-19 pandemic: lessons from the Western Pacific.

PROBLEM: The spread of mis- and disinformation on mobile and messaging apps during the COVID-19 pandemic not only fuelled anxieties and mistrust in health authorities but also undermined the effectiveness of the overall public health response. CONTEXT: Mobile and messaging apps help users stay informed and connected to their families, friends, colleagues and communities. However, during the COVID-19 pandemic, these apps were also one of the primary channels where mis- and disinformation were circulated. ACTION: Recognizing the importance of including mobile and messaging apps in risk communi

Detecting Social and Behavioral Determinants of Health with Structured and Free-Text Clinical Data.

BACKGROUND: Social and behavioral determinants of health (SBDH) are environmental and behavioral factors that often impede disease management and result in sexually transmitted infections. Despite their importance, SBDH are inconsistently documented in electronic health records (EHRs) and typically collected only in an unstructured format. Evidence suggests that structured data elements present in EHRs can contribute further to identify SBDH in the patient record. OBJECTIVE: Explore the automated inference of both the presence of SBDH documentation and individual SBDH risk factors in patient

Committee Opinion No. 653: Concerns Regarding Social Media and Health Issues in Adolescents and Young Adults.

Although there are many positive aspects of social media for adolescents and young adults, there are also risks. Adolescence is a time of significant developmental changes, during which adolescents exhibit a limited capacity for self-regulation and an increased risk of susceptibility to peer pressure and experimentation. Social media can be harmful, and obstetrician-gynecologists may screen their adolescent and young adult patients for high-risk sexual behaviors, especially if sexualized text communication (sexting), exposure to pornography, online dating, or other risk-taking behaviors are pr

Efficacy of Digital Outreach Strategies for Collecting Smoking Data: Pragmatic Randomized Trial.

BACKGROUND: Tobacco smoking is an important risk factor for disease, but inaccurate smoking history data in the electronic medical record (EMR) limits the reach of lung cancer screening (LCS) and tobacco cessation interventions. Patient-generated health data is a novel approach to documenting smoking history; however, the comparative effectiveness of different approaches is unclear. OBJECTIVE: We designed a quality improvement intervention to evaluate the effectiveness of portal questionnaires compared to SMS text message-based surveys, to compare message frames, and to evaluate the completen
