Respiratory function and symptoms in workers exposed simultaneously to jute and hemp.

The environment and health of a working population exposed simultaneously to jute and hemp were studied. Classical symptoms of byssinosis were not present but 21 workers (7%) complained of atypical tightness of the chest. The prevalence of chronic bronchitis among the exposed workers was statistically significant in comparison with controls. Effects of dust concentrations, age and duration of exposure on the prevalence of chronic bronchitis were studied. A statistically significant reduction in FEV1.0 at the end of a work shift occurred in all the exposed workers. Bronchodilators given after t

Steaming of cotton to prevent byssinosis--a plant study.

Imbus, H. R. and Suh, M. W. (1974).British Journal of Industrial Medicine,31, 209-219. Steaming of cotton to prevent byssinosis—a plant study. Pulmonary function tests, respiratory questionnaires, and dust measurements were made in a cotton spinning plant during the processing of steamed cotton and after its discontinuance. During steaming the average drop in FEV1 (Δ FEV1) from the beginning to six hours into the work shift was 19 ml, and after steaming was discontinued 62 ml. In addition, the FEV1 measurements, before work on the first day of the work week, were 60 to 100 ml higher during the

Thermally-induced phase separation of alkali lignin into mesoscale pigments for rapid mordant-free cotton dyeing.

Industrial lignin is a promising sustainable textile colorant, but its weak adhesion to fibers limits practical use. Here we report a metal-free dyeing strategy based on mesoscale lignin pigments (MLPs) formed through thermally induced phase separation. Alkali lignin treated in 50% (v/v) ethanol-water at 200 °C underwent partial depolymerization and, upon cooling, reorganized into irregular ~4 μm flocs driven by hydrophobic interactions and π-π stacking. The resulting metastable suspension mobilized ~52% of the initial lignin and remained dyeing-active for ~24 h, with coarser flocs settling ou

Facile and green synthesis of ZnO nanoparticles for effective photocatalytic degradation of organic dyes and real textile wastewater.

Remediation of organic dyes from wastewater in textile industries is a big challenge to decreasing water pollution. This study was aimed at the preparation of ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) and their application as a photocatalyst for the degradation of methylene blue (MB), sunfix red (SR) and real textile wastewater (RTW) under both UV and visible irradiations. The ZnO NPs were synthesized with a green Thymus vulgaris leaf extract-supported approach following the calcination process. 50 mg L-1 MB and 50 mg L-1 SR dyes were completely photodegrade under UV irradiation after only 20 and 45 minutes, re

Overview of indigo biosynthesis by Flavin-containing Monooxygenases: History, industrialization challenges, and strategies.

Indigo is a natural dye extensively used in the global textile industry. However, the conventional synthesis of indigo using toxic compounds like aniline, formaldehyde, and hydrogen cyanide has led to environmental pollution and health risks for workers. This method also faces growing economic, sustainability, and environmental challenges. To address these issues, the concept of bio-indigo or indigo biosynthesis has been proposed as an alternative to aniline-based indigo synthesis. Among various enzymes, Flavin-containing Monooxygenases (FMOs) have shown promise in achieving a high yield of bi…
