Canine distemper (CD) is a frequently fatal, systemic morbillivirus infection in the dog and other carnivores: encephalomyelitis is the common cause of death. Susceptibility to canine distemper virus (CDV) is now recognized in a wide range of non-domestic animals, most recently in captive lions, tigers and leopards. Furthermore, closely related viruses have produced CD-like diseases in marine mammals. CDV induces an inclusion-body encephalomyelitis in the dog and demyelination is often a conspicuous feature. Myelin injury is associated with the presence of virus but the mechanism of demyelinat…

Notexin, a well known neurotoxin, derived from tiger snake venom, was shown to have direct nephrotoxic properties in experimental mice. A single subcutaneous dose of 1.38 micrograms/kg body weight of notexin produced renal tubular and glomerular damage within 24 hours. Renal damage increased in severity proportional to the dose of notexin injected. At a high dose of notexin, thrombotic "spherules" were found in glomeruli. These thrombotic spherules have not been previously reported to be associated with notexin or snake venoms.

Astrovirus, cardiovirus and rotavirus are RNA viruses widely distributed among humans, domestic and wild mammals, including felids, occasionally associated with fatal outbreaks and highly resistant to environmental conditions. Despite this, there are no reports of these viruses in New World felids. The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of astrovirus, rotavirus and cardiovirus in non-domestic felids under human care or in the wild, across multiple Brazilian biomes (i.e., Amazon Forest, Atlantic Forest, Caatinga, and Cerrado). Biological samples (e.g., blood, oral and rectal swab

In this study, we report the starvation effect and vibriosis infection on a tropical fish, the tiger grouper (Epinephelus fuscoguttatus). The tiger groupers were infected with Vibrio vulnificus for 21 days. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry combined with multivariate analysis was used to assess the variation in metabolite profiles of E. fuscoguttatus. Metabolite productions in infected fishes were significantly influenced by fatty acid production. The Omega 9 (ω-9) was abundant under the challenged conditions compared to Omega 3 (ω-3) and Omega 6 (ω-6). A total of six fatty acids from the ω

We report clinical features, CT-scan and MRI findings of three siblings with Hallervorden-Spätz disease, one of them followed for more than 20years. Patient 1 presented at age 10 with progressive generalized dystonia. Five years later she had violent dystonic spasms with opisthotonos and marked oro-mandibular involvement. Later, dystonia stabilized and examination showed dysarthria, multiple deformities related to dystonic posturing, retinal degeneration and no cognitive impairment. Cerebral CT-scan showed bilateral pallidal lucencies and T2 cerebral MRI showed the "eye of the tiger" sign.Pati

PURPOSE: To compare the MR findings of eight cases with clinical diagnosis of Hallervorden-Spatz disease (HSD) with the pathologic findings of two other cases of HSD.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The eight imaged cases were studied with 0.5-T (seven cases) and/or 1.5-T (five cases) units. Six patients also had CT scans. The two other cases with proven HSD had detailed histologic evaluation.
RESULTS: The 1.5-T findings showed abnormalities confined to the pallidum, which presented a diffuse low signal intensity in T2-weighted images, and an anteromedial area of high signal intensity (eye-of-the-tig

We present the case of an HIV-positive patient with fever, arthralgia and maculopapular exanthema following a stay in Thailand, in whom acute chikungunya infection was serologically confirmed. Treatment was purely symptomatic, as no specific antiviral therapy is available. In view of the increasing number of cases in tropical endemic areas, but also in regions close to the borders of our neighbouring countries, and the steady spread of the tiger mosquito in Switzerland, tropical viral infections such as chikungunya, dengue and Zika are becoming increasingly important for clinical practice in S

Several outbreaks of chikungunya and dengue occurred on Mediterranean coasts during the hot season in the last two decades. Aedes albopictus was the vector involved in all the events. As a consequence of climate change, the 'Tiger' mosquito is now spreading through central Europe, and in the summer of 2023, for the first time, mosquito control measures were implemented in Paris to prevent autochthonous transmission of dengue. Rapid changes in the distribution of tropical disease vectors need to be taken into account in future risk assessment activities.

With the increasing use of cardiac MRI, several cases were described as "sawtooth cardiomyopathy" or "tiger heart". The pathological aspects of these rare forms of myocardial dysplasia, frequently assimilated to non-compaction of the left ventricle, and its prognostic implications remain unclear. We present a case of "sawtooth cardiomyopathy" in a patient with a transient ischemic attack. This article aims to determine, with the other clinical cases in the literature, the MRI and echocardiography criteria for the diagnosis of this cardiomyopathy. Sawtooth cardiomyopathy is probably under diagn

Gel filtration chromatography and SDS-PAGE of venom from two specimens of Demansia psammophis showed little similarity. Amidolytic activity of the venoms, however, was in the same order of reactivity against various chromogenic substrates. The venom from both snakes produced precipitin lines with brown snake antivenom but the venom detection kit (Commonwealth Serum Laboratories) identified one venom as brown snake (Pseudonaja sp.) and the other as tiger snake (Notechis sp.). These results raise questions about the phylogeny of this species.

Predation is a key ecological process shaping sea turtle populations, yet - unlike predation of eggs, hatchlings and adults on nesting beaches - its role at sea remains poorly quantified due to observational challenges. This study synthesizes multiple, rarely integrated data sources-including unpublished data-to examine global patterns of sea turtle predation at sea. Sources include field observations (turtles found stranded, nesting, admitted to rescue centers, or captured in-water for research), literature records, predator diet data, and non-conventional online sources (NCS; images and vide

BACKGROUND: Pantothenate kinase-associated neurodegeneration (PKAN) is the most common subtype of neurodegeneration with brain iron accumulation and is classically associated with pallidal iron deposition and the "eye-of-the-tiger" sign on MRI. However, atypical clinicoradiological presentations may complicate recognition.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a 35-year-old woman with adolescent-onset, slowly progressive dystonia characterized by involuntary mouth opening, tongue protrusion, abnormal limb posturing, gait impairment, and cognitive decline. Neuroimaging showed pallidal signal abnormalit

BACKGROUND: Caecal volvulus is a rare condition with an unknown prevalence, particularly in paediatric patients. Predisposing factors include fixation anomalies of the colon (with or without malrotation) and significant intestinal distension due to conditions such as chronic constipation, post-operative ileus, Hirschsprung disease (HD), or paediatric intestinal pseudo-obstruction (PIPO). African degenerative leiomyopathy (ADL) is a regional variant of visceral myopathy characterised by a fibrotic "tiger-striped" degeneration of the muscular layers of the colon, which causes PIPO. It is endemic

BACKGROUND: Lhermitte-Duclos disease (LDD) is a rare tumor, with only about 300 reported cases. It often shows comorbidity with Cowden syndrome (CS); however, it can occur by itself. Radiologically, the "tiger-stripe" appearance is considered pathognomonic. Surgical resection remains the mainstay of treatment. This report aims to describe the clinical and radiological characteristics of LDD and its relationship with CS according to age group.
METHODS: PubMed electronic databases were searched in August 2022. The search terms included "Lhermitte- Duclos disease" and "dysplastic gangliocytoma,"

Neurodegeneration with brain iron accumulation (NBIA) is a rare, progressive neurodegenerative disorder with extrapyramidal and cognitive clinical symptoms characterized by iron accumulation predominantly in the globus pallidus, cs well as extensive axonal spheroids in various regions of the brain. Recent studies indicate multiple genetic causes, however the illness can occur without obvious genetic background. The most frequent genetic form is the pantothene kinase associated neurodegeneration (PKAN) with mutation in the pantothenate kinase 2 (PANK2) gene. Further forms include phosphoslipase

We present a case of tetanus following a snakebite in Victoria, Australia. An otherwise healthy 58-year-old woman presented following suspected Tiger snake (Notechis scutatus) bite with envenomation. She was not up-to-date with tetanus vaccination and was not offered a booster vaccination. She re-presented 12 days later with features consistent with tetanus infection and was treated with tetanus immunoglobulin and metronidazole with clinical improvement. Snakebites remain a risk for tetanus infection and the assessment of tetanus risk should be included within clinical guidelines for Australia

Pantothenate kinase-associated neurodegeneration (or previously known as Hallervorden-Spatz syndrome) is a very rare disorder that typically manifests in a child with neurological signs such as gait difficulties, dysarthria, and hyperreflexia, associated potentially with psychiatric symptoms such as cognitive decline. It demonstrates on MRI the typical 'eye of the tiger' appearance, which is due to gliosis and accumulation of iron in the globi pallidi. Other differentials can mimic this appearance on MRI, it is therefore important to search for the involvement of other basal ganglia nuclei and

We report a case of pantothenate kinase-associated neurodegeneration with increased regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) in bilateral lentiform nuclei on technetium Tc-99m ethyl cysteinate dimer single-photon emission CT (ECD-SPECT). A 6-year-old boy presented with opisthotonus. T2*-weighted MR images revealed areas of marked hypointensity with a hyperintense focus in bilateral globus pallidus, creating the characteristic eye-of-the-tiger appearance. ECD-SPECT showed increased rCBF in bilateral lentiform nuclei.

The plasma of monkeys envenomated with tiger snake (Notechis scutatus) venom was monitored by radioimmunoassay for both crude venom and a neurotoxin. When the injected limb was immobilised and a pressure of 55 mm Hg applied to the injection site, only very low levels of circulating venom or neurotoxin were detectable. In practical terms, venom movement can be effectively delayed for long periods by the application of a firm crepe bandage to the length of the bitten limb combined with immobilisation by a splint. Pressure alone or immobilisation alone did not delay venom movement.
