The role of motor simulation in action perception: a neuropsychological case study.

Research on embodied cognition stresses that bodily and motor processes constrain how we perceive others. Regarding action perception the most prominent hypothesis is that observed actions are matched to the observer's own motor representations. Previous findings demonstrate that the motor laws that constrain one's performance also constrain one's perception of others' actions. The present neuropsychological case study asked whether neurological impairments affect a person's performance and action perception in the same way. The results showed that patient DS, who suffers from a frontal brain

[Changes in proprioceptive capacities of the shoulder joint in ventral shoulder instability. A comparative study before and after arthroscopic labrum refixation].

Measurements of movement sense determined by threshold levels for the perception of motion of the shoulder were performed in 10 patients with unilateral posttraumatic shoulder instabilities, in 30 patients who underwent arthroscopic labrum repair for recurrent anterior shoulder instability, and in 15 age-related controls. In patients with anterior shoulder instabilities threshold levels for the perception of motion were higher. In addition, movement sense measurements revealed a marked, but time dependent improve of proprioceptive abilities in patients who underwent arthroscopic labrum repair.

Modulation of perceived time caused by stimulus clarity in object recognition.

This study explored the modulation of perceived time based on subjective visual perception, mainly focusing on object recognition. Unlike physical time, psychological time is subject to various influences, such as attention and stimulus characteristics. We conducted two experiments using images comprising dots to systematically vary stimulus clarity and visual recognizability. Experiment 1 revealed that perceived time was longer when an object was identifiable within the stimulus. Experiment 2 extended this finding by offering three response options related to object recognition and naming. Th

Operational tactical uniforms promote body schema underestimation and musculoskeletal discomfort in Brazilian male special operations police officers.

BACKGROUND: Tactical police officers are routinely exposed to high occupational demands and external load carriage resulting from operational uniforms and personal protective equipment (PPE). Although PPE is essential for operational safety, its effects on body schema perception and musculoskeletal discomfort remain poorly understood in elite police populations. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of operational uniforms and PPE on body schema perception and musculoskeletal discomfort in special operations police officers. METHODS: Fifteen police officers were evaluated under two experimen

Cortical and subcortical contributions to state- and strength-based perceptual judgments.

UNLABELLED: Perceptual judgments can be made on the basis of different kinds of information: state-based access to specific details that differentiate two similar images, or strength-based assessments of relational match/mismatch. We explored state- and strength-based perception in eleven right-hemisphere stroke patients, and examined lesion overlap images to gain insight into the neural underpinnings of these different kinds of perceptual judgments. Patients and healthy controls were presented with pairs of scenes that were either identical or differed in that one scene was slightly expanded

Trends in perceived harmfulness of tobacco, alcohol, and cannabis and its' use in 12-16-year-olds, from 2003 to 2023.

BACKGROUND: Substance use is bidirectionally related to perceived harmfulness of its use. While adolescent tobacco, alcohol, and cannabis use have declined over time, little is known about perceived harmfulness trends across substances and frequencies of use. This study examines 20-year harmfulness perception trends of these substances. METHODS: Data from six survey rounds (n = 40,690) of a national cross-sectional school survey on substance use in the Netherlands were used to examine trends in harmfulness perception and substance use among 12- to 16-year-old secondary school students from 20

Impairment of holistic face perception following right occipito-temporal damage in prosopagnosia: converging evidence from gaze-contingency.

Gaze-contingency is a method traditionally used to investigate the perceptual span in reading by selectively revealing/masking a portion of the visual field in real time. Introducing this approach in face perception research showed that the performance pattern of a brain-damaged patient with acquired prosopagnosia (PS) in a face matching task was reversed, as compared to normal observers: the patient showed almost no further decrease of performance when only one facial part (eye, mouth, nose, etc.) was available at a time (foveal window condition, forcing part-based analysis), but a very large

The effect of emotion and personality on olfactory perception.

It is well established that both the emotional tone of sensory stimuli and the personality characteristics of an individual can bias sensory perception. What has largely been unexplored is whether the current emotional state of an individual has a similar effect, and how it works together with other factors. Here we carry out a comprehensive study to examine how olfactory perception is affected by the emotional tone of the stimuli, and the personality and current emotional state of the individual. Subjects reported experiencing happiness, sadness, negativity/hostility and neutrality when expos

Teammate communication, loneliness, and contagion of athlete burnout.

Communication among teammates can influence sport experiences of athletes, including burnout. This might occur through sharing of burnout perceptions, fostering development of burnout perceptions in teammates (i.e., contagion). Contagion of burnout may depend on communication frequency with teammates as well as intrapersonal social constructs like loneliness, which can impact attentiveness to or interpretation of communication from others. Our study purpose was to (a) examine if exposure to teammate burnout predicted athlete burnout later in the season and (b) examine if loneliness moderated t

Trajectories of lymphedema risk perception and their predictors in postoperative breast cancer survivors.

BACKGROUND: Risk perception is considered an important component of patients' self-management in breast cancer-related lymphedema (BCRL). However, existing evidence is largely cross-sectional and provides limited understanding of how risk perception evolves over time in the early postoperative period. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to describe the level of lymphedema risk perception at discharge and to explore its change trajectories during the first 6 months after surgery in patients with breast cancer. METHODS: Participants were recruited from two tertiary grade A hospitals in China and compl

Diminished Visual Attention to Emotional Faces Is Associated with Poor Emotional Valence Perception in Frontotemporal Dementia.

AIM: The current study examined whether visual attention to emotional facial expressions is lower in individuals with frontotemporal dementia (FTD) compared to healthy controls, and whether visual attention to emotional facial expressions is associated with the ability to perceive others' emotional valence accurately. METHODS: Participants with FTD (n = 17) and healthy controls (n = 23) passively viewed pairs of emotional and neutral faces while their visual attention was measured using eye-tracking. A subsample of participants (n = 28) also completed an emotional valence perception task. RE

An Intrinsic Role of Beta Oscillations in Memory for Time Estimation.

The neural mechanisms underlying time perception are of vital importance to a comprehensive understanding of behavior and cognition. Recent work has suggested a supramodal role for beta oscillations in measuring temporal intervals. However, the precise function of beta oscillations and whether their manipulation alters timing has yet to be determined. To accomplish this, we first re-analyzed two, separate EEG datasets and demonstrate that beta oscillations are associated with the retention and comparison of a memory standard for duration. We next conducted a study of 20 human participants usin…

Time in suspense: investigating boredom and related states in a virtual waiting room.

We studied the role of time in the experience of boredom and its relationship with various psychological states using virtual reality. Sixty-six participants visited nine virtual waiting rooms and evaluated their perception of time and psychological experiences, including boredom, exhaustion, restlessness, amotivation, frustration, anger, unhappiness, spontaneous and deliberate mind-wandering, fantasy, and absorption. Results confirmed the relationship between boredom and time perception, showing that the higher the levels of boredom, the slower time seems to pass. However, manipulating time-r…

The role of low-frequency rTMS in the superior parietal cortex during time estimation.

The low-frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) application has been associated with changes in cognitive processes embedded during time perception tasks. Although several studies have investigated the influence of neuromodulation on time perception, the effect of the 1-Hz rTMS application on the superior parietal cortex is not clearly understood. This study analyzes the effect of the low-frequency rTMS on time estimation when applied in the parietal medial longitudinal fissure. For the proposed study, 20 subjects were randomly selected for a crossover study with two cond…

Exploring the role of auditory analysis in atypical compared to typical language development.

The relationship between auditory processing and language skills has been debated for decades. Previous findings have been inconsistent, both in typically developing and impaired subjects, including those with dyslexia or specific language impairment. Whether correlations between auditory and language skills are consistent between different populations has hardly been addressed at all. The present work presents an exploratory approach of testing for patterns of correlations in a range of measures of auditory processing. In a recent study, we reported findings from a large cohort of eleven-year

Brief Report: Two Day-Date Processing Methods in an Autistic Savant Calendar Calculator.

Special ability in computing the day of week for given dates was observed in a 24 year-old male (FB) diagnosed with Asperger syndrome. FB performed almost flawlessly (98.2%) both with past and future dates, over a span of 40 years. Response latency was slower as temporal remoteness of future dates increased. Within the future timespan, FB's performance was consistent with the active use of calendar regularities. On the contrary, within the past timespan (for which no remoteness effect was seen), his performance was mainly linked to memory retrieval of personal events. The case presented here c

Cochlear deafferentation impairs perception of acoustic onset cues in kainate-exposed budgerigars.

Synaptopathy is a common cochlear pathology involving damage, dysfunction, and loss of auditory-nerve synapses with sensory hair cells. Cochlear synaptopathy can occur following sound overexposure due to glutamate excitotoxicity. Synaptopathy is undetectable with the clinical audiogram and is widely hypothesized to cause "hidden hearing loss," i.e., impaired perception of speech and other complex sounds under challenging listening conditions. However, evidence that cochlear synaptopathy causes hidden hearing loss is mixed, and the specific aspects of auditory perception impacted by synaptopath
