Treatment and prophylaxis of tinea infections.

Superficial fungal infections affect millions of people throughout the world. Among them, tinea represents cutaneous infections by dermatophytes. Therapeutic strategies depend upon the affected body site. Hence, clinicians distinguish several types of tinea including the corporis, faciei, cruris, pedis, manuum, capitis, barbae and unguium variants. There are several ways of tackling the tinea problem. Numerous topical and oral antifungals are available today. Topical antifungals remain the most commonly recommended treatment for many superficial dermatophytoses. Active compounds include imidaz

[Tinea of the eyebrows. About six cases].

INTRODUCTION: Tinea of the eyebrows is a part of tinea capitis. M. canis, T. violaceum, T. verrucosum and T. mentagrophytes are the most frequently implicated fungi in tinea of the eyebrows. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Our study includes six patients who presented erythematous scaly plaques and pustules on the eyebrows. The eyebrows hairs were grayish, friable and broken leaving alopecic areas. Direct microscopy of the infected hairs of the eyebrows lesions followed by culture on Sabouraud dextrose agar were effectuated in every patient at the beginning, during and the end of treatment. The Burden of Fungal Infections in Ethiopia.

The burden of severe fungal infections (FIs) is not well addressed in Ethiopia. We have estimated the burden of FIs from multiple demographi … oral and 56,000 oesophageal candidiasis cases. A remarkable 7,051,700 4-14-year-olds probably have tinea capitis and 1,469,000 women probably have recurrent Candida vaginitis. There were 15,200 estimated CPA cases (prevalence) and 11,500 invasive aspergillosis (IA) cases (incidence). Data are scant, but we estimated 5300 candidaemia and 800 Candida peritonitis …

Epidemiology of human dermatophytoses in Africa.

In this critical literature review, we summarize the epidemiological trends of dermatophytoses reported in Africa. Our findings clearly emphasize the heavy burden of dermatophytosis in Africa. Tinea capitis is the primary clinical presentation of dermatophytosis in African children throughout the entire African continent. The disease affects more than 20% of school-age children in West Africa, while the prevalence ranges from 10% to more than 70% in other regions of Africa. In African adults, the presence of tinea corporis is the most frequent indicator of dermatophytosis. However, epidemiolog…
