Optical coherence tomography angiography in retinitis pigmentosa: A narrative review.

Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is a group of inherited retinal disorders characterized by progressive rod and cone photoreceptor degeneration. Changes in retinal vasculature have long been associated with RP. Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) is a novel imaging technology that enables noninvasive visualization of the retinal and choroidal microvasculature. OCTA enables quantification of microvascular changes in the retinal capillary plexus and choriocapillaris, in addition to qualitative feature description. Therefore, OCTA has the potential to become an important tool for better unde

Optical coherence tomography findings in three patients with Werner syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Werner syndrome is a rare, autosomal recessive disorder characterised by premature aging. It is a typical hereditary progeroid syndrome that can be difficult to diagnose owing to its rarity and the similarity of some of its symptoms, such as juvenile cataracts, to other common ophthalmologic conditions. Early onset of bilateral cataracts is currently used as the ophthalmological feature for Werner syndrome; however, ophthalmologists often find performing a detailed examination of the medical history and genetic testing for Werner syndrome at the time of an ophthalmologic consultati

Choroidal Thickness in Multiple Sclerosis: An Optical Coherence Tomography Study.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: To identify changes in the choroidal thickness (CT) in multiple sclerosis (MS) patients with and without optic neuritis (ON) using enhanced-depth-imaging optical coherence tomography (EDI-OCT). METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 96 eyes with MS and 28 eyes of healthy controls. All participants underwent an ophthalmologic examination and EDI-OCT scanning (Spectralis, Heidelberg Engineering, Germany) to assess the CT and the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness. MS patients were divided into two groups: 1) with and 2) without a history of ON. The CT was e

Quantification of Hypotony Maculopathy Using Spectral-Domain Optical Coherence Tomography.

PRCIS: We provide a free-to-use, open-source algorithm to quantify macular hypotony based on optical coherence tomography (OCT) images. This numerical approach calculates a metric that measures the deviations of Bruch's membrane from a smooth ideal retinal layer. PURPOSE: Hypotony maculopathy is a recurrent complication of glaucoma surgical interventions in which extremely low intraocular pressure triggers changes in the shape of retinal layers. Abnormal folds can often be observed in the retina using standard fundoscopy, but OCT is particularly important to appreciate the severity of symptom

Utility of Anterior Segment Optical Coherence Tomography in Muscle Aplasia.

Congenital absence of the extraocular muscles is a relatively rare entity that is diagnosed by magnetic resonance imaging and is usually associated with craniofacial syndromes, microcornea, microphthalmos, and coloboma. The authors describe anterior segment optical coherence tomography as a quick and valuable modality in this setting before subjecting the patient to magnetic resonance imaging or computed tomography. [J Pediatr Ophthalmol Strabismus. 2022;59(2):e20-e22.].

Optical coherence tomography reveals retinal thinning in schizophrenia spectrum disorders.

BACKGROUND: Schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSDs) are presumed to be associated with retinal thinning. However, evidence is lacking as to whether these retinal alterations reflect a disease-specific process or are rather a consequence of comorbid diseases or concomitant microvascular impairment. METHODS: The study included 126 eyes of 65 patients with SSDs and 143 eyes of 72 healthy controls. We examined macula and optic disc measures by optical coherence tomography (OCT) and OCT angiography (OCT-A). Additive mixed models were used to assess the impact of SSDs on retinal thickness and perfu

Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) Diagnostic of Retinitis Pigmentosa - Case Study.

BACKGROUND: Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is a set of inherited rod-cone degenerative diseases that clinically presents with similar signs and symptoms. Mutations in one of more than 70 genes are involved. Patients will commonly present with bone-spicule pigment formation, waxy optic nerve pallor, and attenuated blood vessels in the posterior pole.Symptoms often begin with progressive night blindness, mid-peripheral visual field defects, and eventual tunnel vision. Central vision loss will ultimately occur following loss of rod function. Complete blindness is uncommon. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this

Classification of pachychoroid on optical coherence tomography using deep learning.

PURPOSE: Pachychoroid is characterized by dilated Haller vessels and choriocapillaris attenuation that are seen on optical coherence tomography (OCT) B-scans. This study investigated the feasibility of using deep learning (DL) models to classify pachychoroid and non-pachychoroid eyes from OCT B-scan images. METHODS: In total, 1898 OCT B-scan images were collected from eyes with macular diseases. Images were labeled as pachychoroid or non-pachychoroid based on strict quantitative and qualitative criteria for multimodal imaging analysis by two retina specialists. DL models were trained (80%) an

Optical coherence tomography angiography in the management of diabetic retinopathy.

The introduction of optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) has granted a significant improvement in the assessment of patients with diabetes. In this review, we will provide a description of the prominent OCTA findings in diabetes. In detail, this imaging technology proved that both the retinal and choroidal circulation is affected in diabetic subjects. The recent employment of widefield technology and a three-dimensional (3D) visualization in OCTA imaging are also discussed.

Anterior segment optical coherence tomography findings in leukemic iris infiltration.

Iris involvement by acute lymphoblastic leukemia is a very rare primary leukemic infiltration. Blurred vision, conjunctival injection, anterior chamber reaction, pseudohypopyon, thickening of the iris stroma, change in iris shape and color are common clinical signs in leukemic iris infiltration. There is no optimal treatment. Radiotherapy, systemic chemotherapy (high-dose of methotrexate and/or high-dose cytarabine), topical and systemic corticosteroids have been reported as treatment modalities. Herein we present anterior segment optical coherence tomography findings in a 21-years-old, male,

Guidelines on Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography Imaging: 2020 Focused Update.

Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) has significantly expanded our knowledge of the ocular vasculature. In this review, we provide a discussion of the fundamental principles of OCTA and the application of this imaging modality to study the retinal and choroidal vessels. These guidelines are focused on 2020, and include updates since the 2019 publication. Importantly, we will comment on recent findings on OCTA technology with a special focus on the three-dimensional (3D) OCTA visualization.

Endoscopic Optical Coherence Tomography for Evaluation of Success of Tympanoplasty.

OBJECTIVE: After tympanoplasty, it is often challenging to differentiate between different causes of a remaining air bone gap (ABG). Optical coherence tomography (OCT) offers a new approach for combined morphologic and functional measurements of the tympanic membrane and adjacent parts of the middle ear. Thus, it provides valuable diagnostic information in patients with a reduced sound transfer after middle ear surgery. PATIENT AND INTERVENTION: A patient with history of tympanoplasty and a persistent ABG was investigated with endoscopic OCT before revision surgery. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Th

Applications and future directions for optical coherence tomography in dermatology.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a noninvasive optical imaging method that can generate high-resolution en face and cross-sectional images of the skin in vivo to a maximum depth of 2 mm. While OCT holds considerable potential for noninvasive diagnosis and disease monitoring, it is poorly understood by many dermatologists. Here we aim to equip the practising dermatologist with an understanding of the principles of skin OCT and the potential clinical indications. We begin with an introduction to the technology and discuss the different modalities of OCT including angiographic (dynamic) OCT,

[Role of optical coherence tomography to optimize complex coronary interventions].

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is an innovative catheter-based imaging technology that uses light and fiberoptic to obtain unique details of the coronary arteries and stents on a microscope scale. OCT is an efficient method to rapidly map the extension and type of coronary artery disease with the potential to guide complex percutaneous coronary interventions (PCI). It can reliably detect and quantify atherosclerotic plaque characteristics, differentiate early from late stage of atherosclerotic disease and distinguish atherosclerotic (plaque rupture, erosion, calcified nodule) versus non at

Predictors for layered coronary plaques: an optical coherence tomography study.

Healed coronary plaques, morphologically characterized by a layered pattern, are signatures of previous plaque disruption and healing. Recent optical coherence tomography (OCT) studies showed that layered plaque is associated with vascular vulnerability. However, factors associated with layered plaques have not been studied. The aim of this study was to investigate predictors for layered plaque at the culprit plaques and at non-culprit plaques. Patients with coronary artery disease who underwent pre-intervention OCT imaging of the culprit lesion were included. Layered plaques were defined as p
