Keratin mediated protection of eroded enamel against abrasion - A pilot study.

OBJECTIVE: This in vitro study aimed to assess keratin's role in protecting eroded enamel by evaluating retention and stability of the keratin-mediated mineralised layer following toothbrushing. METHOD: Eighty polished enamel specimens with artificially induced erosive lesions (0.3% citric acid, pH2.7) were randomly assigned to five surface treatment groups: control (C), deionised water (DW), 1450 ppm sodium fluoride (NaF), keratin (K), and TEGDMA cross-linked keratin (KT). Samples were brushed with two layers of treatment material and allowed to dry for 3 min at 34 °C. Samples were remineral

Effect of fluoride on the morphology of calcium phosphate crystals grown on acid-etched human enamel.

The aim of this study was to examine the effect of fluoride ion concentration on the morphology of calcium phosphate crystals grown on acid-etched enamel as a model for tooth enamel erosion. Samples were immersed in calcification solution for 16 h and changes in crystal morphology were monitored by field emission scanning electron microscopy. Without fluoride, plate-like octacalcium phosphate crystals (20 nm thick, 2-10 microm wide) were formed. With 1-10 mg/l fluoride, arrays of denser needle-like nanocrystals (20-30 nm wide, >500 nm in length) were formed. We conclude that there is a minimal

External Cervical Resorption Detected by Cone Beam Computed Tomography on an Immature, Unerupted Maxillary Second Premolar.

Root resorption is a commonly recognized risk of orthodontic treatment and can range from minimal changes at the apex to aggressive and extensive erosion of tooth structure. The following report is aimed at presenting a rare case of idiopathic aggressive preeruptive root resorption in a maxillary second premolar of a young child prior to orthodontic force. During phase I orthodontic treatment, the maxillary premolar required surgical exposure with a bracket and chain to assist in its eruption. Before the exposure, a cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) was captured to aid in localizing the pre

Complete esthetic and functional rehabilitation with adhesively luted all-ceramic restorations--case report over 4.5 years.

Complete prosthodontic rehabilitation using single-tooth crowns is an invasive therapy, even though the success of single-tooth crowns is well proven. In some cases, adhesively luted glass-ceramic restorations with reduced preparation depths might be a less invasive alternative. In the case presented, a 40-year-old female patient with multiple cement restorations, erosions, dysfunctional abrasion, and gap formation in the maxillary anterior region received treatment to restore function and esthetics. Minimally invasive glass-ceramic full-coverage crowns, partial crowns, and veneers were placed

The role of collagen cross-linker in dentin mineralization: a scoping review.

OBJECTIVES: Dentin remineralization is a complex process that involves the crystallization of exposed collagen to restore the mechanical properties of demineralized dentin. It plays an essential role in managing dental caries and erosive tooth wear. Collagen cross-linkers have emerged as a promising strategy to enhance the stability of exposed collagen while facilitating mineral deposition. This scoping review evaluated the role of collagen cross-linkers in dentin remineralization. DATA: This scoping review was conducted following the PRISMA-ScR guidelines. SOURCES: The databases Medline, Sc

Comparison of hard tissue interrelationships at the cervical region of teeth based on tooth type and gender difference.

CONTEXT: Cementoenamel junction (CEJ) represents the anatomic limit between the crown and root surface. With advancing age and continuous eruption, this area becomes exposed in the oral media. Consequently, CEJ will be subjected to the action of various physical and chemical factors that might alter its morphology, with the cementum being affected in most cases. AIM: To identify the frequency of hard tissue interrelationships present at the CEJ in relation to different genders, positions and aspects of tooth using a light microscope. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The cervical regions of 80 permanen

[Multi-factoriality of dentine hypersensitivity].

INTRODUCTION: Dentine hypersensitivity has been defined as a sharp, short pain arising from exposed dentin in response to stimuli typically thermal, evaporative tactile, osmoticor, chemical and which cannot be ascribed to any other form of dental defect or pathology. PREVALENCE: The most affected patients range in age from 20 to 40. The following teeth tend to be most sensitive: cuspids, premnolars and incisors, location-concentrated on the facial surface. MORPHOLOGICAL BASES OF DENTINE HYPERSENSITIVITY: Sensitive teeth have much greater numbers of open tubules per unit area and the average d

Do Abrasives Play a Role in Toothpaste Efficacy against Erosion/Abrasion?

Abrasives may counteract the efficacy of anti-erosion toothpastes either due to physical effects or due to interaction with active agents. This study aimed to investigate whether the amount of abrasives is a determinant for the efficacy of Sn2+-containing toothpastes with or without chitosan additive. Enamel samples were eroded (0.50 wt% citric acid, pH 2.5; 6 × 2 min/day) on a shaking desk - 30/min in experiment 1 (E1) and 35/min in experiments 2 (E2) and 3 (E3) - and immersed in toothpaste slurries (2 × 2 min). Half of the samples were additionally brushed (15 s, load 200 g) within the immer

[Obesity and oral health: risk factors of obese patients in dental practice].

For 20 years, on a worldwide scale, the prevalence of obesity has always progressed as well in child as in adult. Obesity is frequently associated with other pathologies: cardiovascular, oncologic, systemic (diabetes) or oral. In this situation, the follow-up of obesity and its co morbidity needs a multidisciplinary approach. Obesity and oral health pathologies have risk factors in common, particularly dietary one. Indeed, it is established that food affects oral health. In the same way, an unbalanced diet raises the risk of overweight or obesity. Thereby, owing to these inter relations, the W
