Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) is an effective treatment for major depressive disorder (MDD), but clinical response is heterogeneous, highlighting the need to identify factors associated with individual outcomes. Substance use commonly co-occurs with depression and is associated with worse psychiatric outcomes, yet its relationship with antidepressant response to rTMS remains poorly characterized. Using a naturalistic sample of individuals receiving rTMS for MDD at an academic medical center and affiliated outpatient clinics from 2014 to 2025 (n=356), we examined whether b…

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive brain stimulation tool for investigating the neurophysiology of different neurological and neuropsychiatric disorders, including Parkinson's disease (PD) and other parkinsonian syndromes and movement disorders. Briefly, TMS enables targeted stimulation of specific cortical regions through externally applied magnetic pulses, avoiding surgical intervention (as it occurs in deep brain stimulation) and making it a safe, repeatable, and well-tolerated approach. Over the past two decades, extensive research has explored the clinical utility o…

BACKGROUND: Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), as a non-invasive neurostimulation technique, modulates neural activity by applying electromagnetic fields to specific areas of the brain. It is clinically used for several approved indications, including major depressive disorder, obsessive‑compulsive disorder, and migraine with aura, and is under active investigation for other neurological and psychiatric conditions. Accurate stimulation targeting is crucial for the effectiveness of TMS. Existing targeting methods, such as generic brain localization caps and the international 10-20 electro…

Cancer epidemiology, biomarkers & prevention : a publication of the American Association for Cancer Research, cosponsored by the American Society of Preventive Oncology2026eng
Cigarette smoking after a cancer diagnosis is associated with increased mortality, cancer recurrence, treatment-related toxicity, and diminished quality of life, yet sustained cessation remains a challenge. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), an FDA-approved noninvasive neuromodulation treatment for both major depressive disorder and smoking cessation, represents a promising intervention for cancer survivors due to its unique multitarget effects. Cancer survivors experience high rates of comorbid psychopathology, including depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation, and pain-conditions that i…

Noninvasive brain stimulation (NIBS) techniques, such as repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), are promising candidate therapeutics for Alzheimer's disease (AD). We review the evidence supporting the fundamental mechanisms of action of rTMS treatments in AD. rTMS exerts profound effects at different neurobiological and systems neurophysiological levels. By engaging distinct pre- and postsynaptic structures within the stimulated neural network, it directly or indirectly influences various cellular and molecular components. In AD, rTMS influences synaptic plasticity, inducing last…

BACKGROUND: Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) is an emerging treatment for several mental health conditions including substance use disorders. Symptom provocation before rTMS is hypothesized to activate disease-related neurocircuitry and enhance treatment effects. For addiction, craving induction is frequently used before treatment, but its clinical utility requires further exploration. To assess whether craving induction enhances treatment outcomes, we analyzed data from the pivotal multisite trial of deep TMS (DTMS) for tobacco use disorder (TUD).
METHODS: A total of 262 p…

Tobacco use remains the number one preventable cause of death in the United States, resulting in significant public health and economic costs. Despite progress in reducing tobacco use through pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy smoking cessation interventions, additional treatment options are still needed to improve treatment effectiveness. As an adjunctive treatment, the US Food and Drug Administration recently cleared transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), a noninvasive brain stimulation technique, as an aid for smoking cessation in adults. Given that most smoking cessation interventions occ…

Background: Vestibular schwannomas (VS) are brain tumors affecting the vestibulocochlear nerve. Thus, VS patients suffer from tinnitus (TN). While the pathophysiology is mainly unclear, there is an increasing interest in repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) for TN treatment. However, the results have been divergent. In addition to the methodological aspects, the heterogeneity of the patients might affect the outcome. Yet, there is no study evaluating rTMS exclusively in VS-associated tinnitus. Thus, the present pilot study evaluates low-frequency rTMS to the right dorsolateral p…

Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) is a promising approach for post-stroke rehabilitation but there lacks a rationale strategy to plan, execute, and monitor treatment. We present a case of targeted rTMS using the Omniscient Infinitome software to devise targets for treatment in a post-stroke patient and describe the functional connectomic changes after treatment. A 19-year-old female with no medical history presented 19 months after suffering a left middle cerebral artery (MCA) superior division ischemic stroke, resulting in language impairment and diminished right upper extre…

Pneumococcal meningitis (PM) causes damage to the hippocampus, a brain structure critically involved in learning and memory. Hippocampal injury-which compromises neurofunctional outcome-occurs as apoptosis of progenitor cells and immature neurons of the hippocampal dentate granule cell layer thereby impairing the regenerative capacity of the hippocampal stem cell niche. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) harbours the potential to modulate the proliferative activity of this neuronal stem cell niche. In this study, specific rTMS protocols-namely continuous and intermittent theta…
