Differences in Personality and Psychopathological Symptoms among Adults with Distinct Gender Trajectories.

Transgender and gender diverse (TGD) people show different trajectories after gender transition. While some continue to transition, others detransition (DT), that is, stop or reverse the process. Both populations experience poor mental health, but no study has compared whether they have different psychological profiles and needs. This exploratory study compared TGD and DT participants in terms of psychopathological symptoms, personality variables, and the possible presence of eating disorders (ED) and autism spectrum disorders (ASD). A total of 29 TGD participants (M age = 28.28, 72.4% female

LGBTQ Youth Homelessness: Why We Need to Protect Our LGBTQ Youth.

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer/questioning (LGBTQ) youth are 120% more likely to be homeless than cisgender and heterosexual youth, yet current federal policies are insufficient and exclude LGBTQ youth. Youth homeless shelters are inadequately equipped to serve LGBTQ homeless youth due to poor funding, a focus on heterosexual or cisgender clients in their programs, and a lack of LGBTQ-friendly policies. Given the pervasiveness of this issue, public health and social policy interventions must be considered. In this perspective, the LGBTQ homeless youth epidemic is introduced and

Ethical Concerns About Emerging Treatment Paradigms for Gender Dysphoria.

The increasing incidence of requests for medical services to support gender transition for children, adolescents, and adults has consequences for society, governmental institutions, schools, families, health-care professionals, and, of course, patients. The sociological momentum to recognize and accommodate to trans phenomena has posed ethical dilemmas for endocrinologists, mental health professionals, and sexual specialists as they experience within themselves the clash between respect for patient autonomy, beneficence, nonmaleficence, and informed consent. The larger ethical clashes are cult

Sexual Inactivity Among Transfeminine Persons: A Canadian Respondent-Driven Sampling Survey.

Sexual health research with transfeminine persons (individuals assigned male at birth who identify as female or feminine) has focused on HIV infection and sexual function following medical treatments. Yet, approximately half of transfeminine persons in Ontario, Canada, reported no partnered sex in the previous year. Therefore, we identified sociodemographic, social, and psychosocial factors associated with past-year sexual inactivity among transfeminine Ontarians. A multi-mode respondent-driven sampling survey of transgender people was conducted in 2009-2010 (N = 433), including 173 transfemin

An evaluation of service utilization among male to female transgender youth: qualitative study of a clinic-based sample.

This qualitative study examined experiences with health and social service institutions and experiences related to education, employment, and other social networks among 18 ethnically diverse, male to female (MTF) transgender youth aged 16 to 24 years. Participants were recruited from a youth health clinic where they were receiving services for their transgender/transsexual identity. In-depth, semi-structured interviews explored youths' patterns of service utilization, reasons for seeking care, beliefs about the usefulness of services received, experiences with service providers, barriers to c

The legal paradox of uterus transplantation in transgender women: reproductive innovation and regulatory limits after For Women Scotland.

Uterus transplantation (UTx) is a novel reproductive technology that intersects organ transplantation and assisted reproduction. Although births following UTx are a clinical reality, the procedure raises legal questions not anticipated by UK legislative frameworks. This article examines whether UTx may lawfully be provided to transgender women for reproductive purposes under UK law through analysis of the Human Tissue Act 2004, Human Fertilisation and Embryology Acts 1990 and 2008, Gender Recognition Act 2004, and the Supreme Court decision in For Women Scotland Ltd v The Scottish Ministers. Contraceptive Needs of the Transmasculine Patient.

Patient preference plays a big role in deciding which contraceptive option is right for them. Testosterone, while not a contraceptive, can induce amenorrhea, but it does not reliably inhibit ovulation, so pregnancy is still possible if transmasculine patients are exposed to semen. No contraceptive option is considered superior from a dysphoria standpoint and shared decision-making should be used to determine the right choice for the patient. Estrogen-containing contraceptives tend to be less frequently utilized given perceived dysphoria from taking estrogen. Outside of other underlying conditi

Understanding vulnerabilities and resilience in binge eating disorder among female population and transgender individuals across the lifespan: a narrative review.

Binge eating disorder (BED) represents a significant public health concern due to its multifaceted physical, psychological, and economic consequences, all of which substantially impair the quality of life of affected individuals. Individuals with BED often experience persistent body dissatisfaction, emotional distress, anxiety, depression, chronic stress, and social prejudice. Fear of judgment, stigmatisation, and discrimination frequently leads to delays in, or complete avoidance of, seeking medical or psychological support. Although BED remains largely underdiagnosed, existing literature ind

Understanding and Caring for Adolescents and Young Adults Who Are Considering or Pursuing a Detransition Process.

Detransition refers to stopping, shifting, or reversing an initial gender transition. It often involves changes in self-identity and decisional regret with prior transition-related medical or surgical treatments. There are currently no formal care guidelines available to assist clinicians in discussing detransition with patients and their families or for supporting young people navigating the process. The aim of this article is to examine contemporary detransition research published between 2020 and 2025 to enhance evidence-informed care for adolescents and young adults who are transgender and

Impacts of Gender Self-Identification on Incarcerated Females: How Washington State Law Widens a Knowledge Gap.

In an effort to mitigate the elevated rates of sexual abuse reported by transgender adults incarcerated in state prisons, Washington State Department of Corrections has implemented policies that prioritize gender self-identification over birth-registered sex when making housing decisions. This has resulted in the transfer of males to the Washington Corrections Center for Women along with reports of negative impacts on incarcerated females. Any policy problem of unknown magnitude requires formal data collection and analysis. Washington State law, including one known as House Bill 1956, obstruct

Evaluation and medical care of intersex and gender diverse youth.

While there is considerable overlap in the treatment of patients with intersex traits and differences in sex development (I/DSD) with transgender and gender diverse (TGD) youth, the initial medical evaluation varies significantly. I/DSD youth often present due to differences in genitalia development in infancy or pubertal development in adolescence, and this leads to comprehensive biochemical, radiologic, and genetic evaluation. TGD youth, however, tend to have typical development noted at birth and during puberty, but present with a gender identity that does not align with their sex assigned

The genetics and hormonal basis of human gender identity.

Gender identity refers to one's psychological sense of their own gender. Establishing gender identity is a complex phenomenon, and the diversity of gender expression challenges simplistic or unified explanations. For this reason, the extent to which it is determined by nature (biological) or nurture (social) is still debatable. The biological basis of gender identity cannot be modeled in animals and is best studied in people who identify with a gender that is different from the sex of their genitals such as transgender people and people with disorders/differences of sex development. [Evaluation of bone health in transgender people. Position of the Argentine Osteoporosis Society].

The Argentine Osteoporosis Society convened renowned specialists in the care of transgender people to prepare the first local position on the evaluation of bone health in this population. Law 26.743 on "Gender Identity" recognize all identities and guarantees free care throughout the health system. The impact of different gender affirmation treatments on bone mass has been topic of international debate. To date the evidence remains limited and different societies have issued suggestions and recommendations. For this reason, we believe it is relevant to mention our experience, capturing through

Histopathologic Features of Breast Tissue From Transgender Men and Their Associations With Androgen Therapy.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the histopathologic features of breast tissue of transgender men (TM) undergoing gender-affirming bilateral mastectomies in relation to androgen therapy (AT). METHODS: We reviewed 374 transgender bilateral mastectomy cases from 2017 to 2020. Of these, 314 (84.4%) patients received preoperative AT. We compared these with 127 cases of cisgender females undergoing elective breast reduction. RESULTS: Breast specimens from TM on AT, compared with cisgender women, showed a median higher gross percentage of fibrous tissue (P < .001), reduced lobular density (P = .004), higher
