Shifting Compasses: A Qualitative Study of Lived Experiences Driving Perioperative Nurses to Leave the Profession Post COVID-19.

Background: During the COVID-19 pandemic, perioperative nurses faced extraordinary demands in frontline roles, leading many to leave their positions. This study investigates the factors influencing their decisions to resign or change roles during or after the pandemic, providing insights into systemic, ethical, and emotional contributors to professional attrition. Methods: A qualitative study was conducted at a university hospital in Spain between December 2021 and March 2022. A hermeneutic phenomenological approach was used to analyze the lived experiences of perioperative nurses who worked d

"Doing the right thing": Moral conflicts and ethical issues experienced by military nurses during wartime.

INTRODUCTION: The War on Terrorism, which included Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) in Afghanistan from 2001 to 2014 and the concurrent Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) from 2003 to 2011, exposed military nurses to situations and challenges for which many reported feeling unprepared. Clinically, nurses faced multi-trauma injuries and devastating wounds suffered by military troops and civilians alike. Cultural issues and harsh living conditions added further complications to the care environment. The purpose of this study was to address the research question: How do military nurses identify, asses

Lived Experience of Violence Perpetrated by Treated Patients and Their Visitors in Intensive Care Units: A Qualitative Study of Nurses.

BACKGROUND: Patient and visitor violence (PVV) is a widespread problem for health professionals. Nurses working in intensive care units (ICUs) face a relatively high risk of experiencing PVV, which significantly impacts both the health of nurses and the institution as a whole. The subjective perceptions of ICU nurses regarding PVV are inadequately explored in the literature. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to explore the perspectives, experiences, and perceptions of PVV in ICU nurses and to better understand the precipitating factors of violence. METHODS: A phenomenological qualitativ

Workplace interventions to prevent or reduce post-traumatic stress disorder and symptoms among hospital nurses: A scoping review.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to identify literature on evaluated workplace interventions to prevent or reduce the prevalence or impact of work-related post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and PTSD symptoms among hospital nurses. A second objective was to summarise and compare the characteristics and effectiveness of these interventions. BACKGROUND: A substantial proportion of nurses report PTSD symptoms. Previous reviews have synthesised interventions to address PTSD in military and other high-risk populations, but similar work focusing on nurses has yet to be conducted. METHODS: W

Mediating effect of resilience and fear of COVID-19 on the relationship between social support and post-traumatic stress disorder among campus-quarantined nursing students: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: The emergency of Omicron variants, spreading in China and worldwide, has sparked a new wave of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. The high infectivity and persistence of the pandemic may trigger some degrees of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) for nursing students experiencing indirect trauma exposure to the epidemic, which hinders the role transition from students to qualified nurses and exacerbates the health workforce shortage. Thus, it's well worth an exploration to understand PTSD and its underlying mechanism. Specifically, PTSD, social support, resilience,

Transitioning home: comprehensive case management for America's heroes.

PURPOSE: The conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq, also known as Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation Iraqi Freedom, and Operation New Dawn, have created unique challenges for rehabilitation teams, including nurse and social work case managers. Active duty service members, National Guard and Reservists have deployed in large numbers and as many as 20% have been exposed to blast injury, which can result in polytrauma and traumatic brain injury, the "signature injury" of the war, as well as psychological trauma, and painful musculoskeletal injuries. In addition, there are also documented emotional

Colles' fracture.

Many people "slip and fall", especially in the icy areas of the winter season. To prevent an injury to the head, most people put their hand out to hit the ground first, so the wrist usually gets injured. The most frequent injury from this type of "intervention" is a fracture to the distal radius and/or ulna, which is frequently called a "Colles' fracture."

Developing a polytrauma rehabilitation center: a pioneer experience in building, staffing, and training.

The military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan have resulted in patterns of injury not commonly seen in previous conflicts. Improvised explosive devices are the primary weapon, and exposure to blast is the most common mechanism of injury. Blasts can result in polytrauma injury, in which multiple body systems, including the head and brain, are injured. Nursing and rehabilitation care can be further challenged by other blast sequelae such as pain, amputation, blindness or low vision, hearing impairment, and aphasia. This article describes the process by which one Veterans Affairs Medical Center

Personal and work-related factors associated with post-traumatic growth in nurses: A mixed studies systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Nurses, assuming a wide range of clinical and patient care responsibilities in a healthcare team, are highly susceptible to direct and indirect exposure to traumatic experiences. However, literature has shown that nurses with certain traits developed a new sense of personal strength in the face of adversity, known as post-traumatic growth (PTG). This review aimed to synthesize the best available evidence to evaluate personal and work-related factors associated with PTG among nurses. DESIGN: Mixed studies systematic review. METHODS: Studies examining factors influencing PTG on c

Is Nasal High Flow Inferior to Continuous Positive Airway Pressure for Neonates?

Nasal high-flow therapy (nHF) is increasingly used for neonates, with perceived benefits including reduced rates of nasal trauma and parent and nursing staff preference. Current evidence suggests that although nHF is a reasonable alternative for postextubation support of preterm infants, continuous positive airway pressure is a superior modality for primary support of respiratory distress syndrome. Minimal evidence exists for use of nHF in extremely preterm infants less than 28 weeks' gestation. Depending on clinician preference, units may still choose nHF in some settings, although careful ch

Developmental Issues and Mental Health.

The trajectory of human development follows a predictable course of milestones. As genomic research has brought us more understanding of the brain, the etiology of mental illness is progressing from psychodynamic origins postulated by Freud in 1960 to organic pathways and epigenetic derivations. Humans develop on normal pathways that can be derailed by poverty, illness, and trauma. When infants begin life from a healthy perspective, conditions that may follow such as a mental disorder may be moderated by healthy starts. In this paper, selected developmental theories and mental disorders are pr

Veteran Competencies for Undergraduate Nursing Education.

Military Veterans comprise approximately 10% of the US population. Most Veterans do not receive their health care through Veterans Affairs facilities, are seen across the health care system, and their prior military service and associated health issues often go unrecognized. In this study, a modified Delphi design was used to develop a set of 10 Veteran Care Competencies and associated knowledge, skills, and attitudes for Undergraduate Nursing Education: Military and Veteran Culture, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Amputation and Assistive Devices, Environmental/Chemical Exposures, Substance U

Injuries to the cervix in sexual trauma.

Research on genital injury in sexual assault is limited and few articles have documented injuries to the cervix in sexual assault victims. This review focuses on reviewing and critically evaluating available literature on injuries of the cervix associated with rape, sexual trauma, and some other circumstances. Based on this evaluation, topics for future research are suggested. Nursing and medical studies were examined for this review. The collective studies date from 1991 to 2004. Although multiple articles were identified pertaining to sexual assault and genital injury, only six articles that

User satisfaction with single-use instruments versus reusable instruments for treating distal radius fractures with locking volar plates.

INTRODUCTION: The adoption of single-use instruments (SUI) in orthopedic and trauma surgery continues at a rapid pace. Economics studies on this topic have come to contradictory conclusions about whether these SUI have a cost advantage. The aims of our study were to (1) compare the satisfaction of operating room staff between SUI and reusable instruments (RUI) in the context of distal radius fracture fixation with locking volar plates; (2) compare the immediate postoperative and medium-term radiological outcomes of patients operated these two types of instrument sets. We hypothesized that user

Experiences and attitudes towards agitated behaviours in TBI ICU patients (EXSTATIC): understanding various management practices through qualitative interviews with nurses.

INTRODUCTION & OBJECTIVES: Agitation is a common complication after an acute TBI in ICU patients. Professionals have a range of strategies to address agitation. Yet the absence of evidence-based guidelines and how these strategies are implemented complicates the management and safety may often be compromised for both ICU professionals and patients. This project explores experiences and attitudes of ICU-nurses to better understand the management of agitated behaviors in acute TBI-patients. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 12 ICU-nurses from two Level-1 trauma centers in

Registered nurses' knowledge and interpretation of ECG rhythms: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Electrocardiographic (ECG) monitoring and recording are seen as the most commonly used non-invasive diagnostic tool to identify cardiac arrhythmia and myocardial damage in the clinical setting. There is an expectation that critical care nurses are ideally trained to interpret abnormalities and morphology in the ECG more proficiently than nurses from general ward areas. However, the ability to interpret and recognise ECG abnormalities is dependent on which critical care area nurses are currently working in and their level of experience. AIM: The aim of this study was to investigate

[To Push or Not to Push? Reflections on the Uterine Fundal Pressure Application in the Second Stage of Labor].

Women who undergo vaginal birth apply uterine fundal pressure during the second stage of labor. Uterine fundal pressure is done manually with the practitioner's forearms, elbows, or palms pressed on the uterine fundus at a 30° to 45° angle to the maternal spine in the direction of the pelvis. The pressure is applied in the longitudinal direction. Gentle, firm, and steady pressure is recommended. The various side effects of applying uterine fundal pressure include: uterine rupture, postpartum urinary retention, severe perineal trauma and pain, rib fracture, postpartum dyspareunia, and potential
