Evidence of rTMS for Motor or Cognitive Stroke Recovery: Hype or Hope?

BACKGROUND: Evidence of efficacy of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) for stroke recovery is hampered by an unexplained variability of reported effect sizes and an insufficient understanding of mechanisms of action. We aimed to (1) briefly summarize evidence of efficacy, (2) identify critical factors to explain the reported variation in effects, and (3) provide mechanism-based recommendations for future trials. METHODS: We performed a systematic review of the literature according to Cochrane and PRISMA Protocols. We included trials with ≥10 patients per treatment group. We c

Responsiveness and clinically important differences of the Western Ontario Rotator Cuff (WORC) Index in surgical and non-surgical treatment groups with different follow-up periods: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: This study reviews and meta-analyzes the responsiveness and minimal clinically important difference (MCID) of the Western Ontario Rotator Cuff (WORC) Index for various patient populations and treatment durations. METHODS: A comprehensive search in PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and CINAHL identified studies on the responsiveness or MCID of the WORC in shoulder conditions. Two authors independently screened articles. Study quality was appraised using COSMIN and GRADE guidelines. Responsiveness was evaluated using anchor-based MCID and distribution-based standardized mean differenc

Blood Cell Biophysical Trajectories Reveal Response to CAR-T Therapy in Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma.

Although chimeric antigen receptor T-cell (CAR-T) therapy has substantially improved outcomes in diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), disease relapse remains a major clinical challenge. Because treatment-associated immune remodeling evolves dynamically over time, complementary biomarkers capable of longitudinally monitoring immune-cell state changes are needed to evaluate therapeutic response and relapse following CAR-T therapy. In this study, we developed a label-free, high-throughput image cytometry platform for longitudinal, multiparametric profiling of peripheral blood mononuclear cells

Parametric Bayesian modelling of tuberculosis mortality determinants and facility level heterogeneity effect using Gamma and Gaussian shared frailty techniques.

BACKGROUND: In a normal regression analysis for determinants of tuberculosis (TB) outcomes, assumptions that the sample is homogenous are made. However, the model does not account for the overall effect of unobserved or unmeasured covariates. Frailty may exacerbate the effects of TB on patients and raise their risk of death in Lesotho. This study aims to quantify the amount of heterogeneity that exists at the facility level, and to ascertain the determinants of TB mortality across all the catchment areas in Lesotho. METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort of patients on TB treatment register

Does renal function affect the efficacy or safety of a pharmacoinvasive strategy in patients with ST-elevation myocardial infarction? A meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: The efficacy and safety of pharmacoinvasive strategy following fibrinolysis for ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) in relation to renal function have not been established. METHODS: Using patient-level data from 4 randomized controlled trials, we examined the efficacy and safety of pharmacoinvasive versus standard treatment after fibrinolysis for STEMI. Patients were stratified based on the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) on presentation (<60 mL/min/1.73 m2 vs ≥60 mL/min/1.73 m2). The primary outcome was the composite of death or reinfarction at 30 days. RESULT

Characterization of anti-treponemal lymphotoxin from lymphocytes of syphilitic rabbits.

The effect of various treatments on the activity of anti-treponemal lymphotoxin (ATL) produced by lymphocytes of syphilitic rabbits was studied. Treponema pallidum-killing activity of ATL was slightly reduced after heating at 56 degrees C and completely abolished at 100 degrees C. The significant reduction of the activity was also obtained after exposure of ATL to acidic conditions (pH 1-5) at room temperature, or by treatment with papain and neuraminidase. Activity of ATL was completely resistant to deoxyribonuclease, ribonuclease and trypsin treatment. ATL was eluted from the Sephadex G-100

The efficacy of cognitive behavior therapy for the treatment of perinatal anxiety symptoms: A preliminary meta-analysis.

Cognitive-behavior therapy (CBT) is considered the psychological treatment of choice for anxiety disorders in the general population. However the efficacy of CBT for anxiety that occurs during the perinatal period, defined as the period from conception to 12 months post birth, is less understood. Perinatal anxiety is a complex and multifaceted problem that can affect both the pregnant women and the unborn child, as well as the wider family unit. The aim of this study was to synthesize the current empirical status of CBT for perinatal anxiety using a meta-analytic approach. Relevant articles we

Catalase-Modulated Heterogeneous Fenton Reaction for Selective Cancer Cell Eradication: SnFe2O4 Nanocrystals as an Effective Reagent for Treating Lung Cancer Cells.

Heterogeneous Fenton reactions have been proven to be an effective and promising selective cancer cell treatment method. The key working mechanism for this method to achieve the critical therapeutic selectivity however remains unclear. In this study, we proposed and demonstrated for the first time the critical role played by catalase in realizing the therapeutic selectivity for the heterogeneous Fenton reaction-driven cancer cell treatment. The heterogeneous Fenton reaction, with the lattice ferric ions of the solid catalyst capable of converting H2O2 to highly reactive hydroxyl radicals, can

Spatial heterogeneity in microglia-complement crosstalk: Implications for synaptic pruning in Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by synaptic loss, as a key pathological feature in its early stages. Recent studies have highlighted the central role of microglia-complement interactions in synaptic pruning. This interaction exhibits significant spatial heterogeneity in AD, with activation patterns and functional manifestations varying across different brain regions and stages of disease. Therefore, this article systematically reviews the synergistic mechanisms of microglia and the complement system in physiological synaptic pruning. Additionally, the dyn
