Myeloradiculitis: a rare event in schistosoma infection.

Schistosomiasis a parasitic disease caused by trematodes is widely distributed in (sub-)tropical countries. Depending on the species the infection manifests clinically as gastrointestinal (preferentially Schistosoma mansoni and S. japonicum) or urinary (preferentially S. haematobium) disorders. Here we present an uncommon case of myeloradiculitis leading to bladder palsy and sensory loss at the lower limbs.

The complete mitochondrial genome of Ogmocotyle ailuri: gene content, composition and rearrangement and phylogenetic implications.

Trematodes of the genus Ogmocotyle are intestinal flukes that can infect a variety of definitive hosts, resulting in significant economic losses worldwide. However, there are few studies on molecular data of these trematodes. In this study, the mitochondrial (mt) genome of Ogmocotyle ailuri isolated from red panda (Ailurus fulgens) was determined and compared with those from Pronocephalata to investigate the mt genome content, genetic distance, gene rearrangements and phylogeny. The complete mt genome of O. ailuri is a typical closed circular molecule of 14 642 base pairs, comprising 12 protei

Neodiplostomum cf. seoulense (Seo, Rim, Lee, 1964) sensu Pyo et al., 2014 (Trematoda: Diplostomidae Poirier, 1886): morphology, life cycle, and phylogenetic relationships.

Furcocercariae of the genus Neodiplostomum Railliet, 1919 (Diplostomidae Poirier, 1886) were found in freshwater snails Helicorbis sujfunensis Starobogatov, 1957 (Planorbidae Rafinesque, 1815) collected from three localities in the Russian southern Far East. For the trematodes from each locality, frogs played the role of the second intermediate host, and rats were the definitive host. Chickens were insusceptible to infection. The morphological and molecular data obtained for these trematodes indicated they were representatives of the same species. The experimentally-derived adult individuals w

Parasites and malignancies, a review, with emphasis on digestive cancer induced by Cryptosporidium parvum (Alveolata: Apicomplexa).

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) identifies ten infectious agents (viruses, bacteria, parasites) able to induce cancer disease in humans. Among parasites, a carcinogenic role is currently recognized to the digenetic trematodes Schistosoma haematobium, leading to bladder cancer, and to Clonorchis sinensis or Opisthorchis viverrini, which cause cholangiocarcinoma. Furthermore, several reports suspected the potential association of other parasitic infections (due to Protozoan or Metazoan parasites) with the development of neoplastic changes in the host tissues. The present w

Study of parasitic fauna of three species of deer occurring in southeastern Mexico.

Three species of deer can be found in southeastern Mexico, the white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginanus), the red brocket deer (Mazama temama), and the Yucatan brocket deer (O. pandora). Here, we applied a combination of non-invasive sampling, necropsy examinations, and molecular diagnostics to assess the endoparasite infections fauna of in wild and captive populations of these three deer species. We analyzed a total of 140 samples and found eleven taxa parasitizing these hosts, including two trematodes (Paramphistomum sp., an unidentified trematode), one anoplocephalid cestode, six nematodes

A MULTIPLEX PCR ASSAY FOR THE DIFFERENTIAL DETECTION OF OPISTHORCHIS FELINEUS AND METORCHIS BILIS.

Opisthorchis felineus and Metorchis bilis are two common small worms that parasitize in the gallbladder and bile ducts of the liver of humans and carnivores. These parasites have a severe impact on health and are considered pathogens of serious diseases worldwide, such as cholangiocarcinoma. However, there are still no commercially available molecular diagnostic kits capable of simultaneously detecting these parasites in humans. Therefore, the study aimed to develop a multiplex PCR analysis that will differentially determine these two opisthorchiasis infections in one reaction. Two specific pr

Specific diagnosis of Opisthorchis viverrini using loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) targeting parasite microsatellites.

Opisthorchis viverrini and other food-borne trematode infections are major health problems in Thailand, the Lao People's Democratic Republic, Vietnam and Cambodia. Differential diagnosis of O. viverrini based on the microscopic observation of parasite eggs is difficult in areas where Clonorchis sinensis and minute intestinal flukes coexist. Recently, loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) has been widely used for detection and identification of trematode for its simple method that is useful in low-resource or field settings. We have reported ITS1-LAMP assay to detect O. viverrini infect…

Mixed infections with Opisthorchis viverrini and intestinal flukes in residents of Vientiane Municipality and Saravane Province in Laos.

Faecal examinations for helminth eggs were performed on 1869 people from two riverside localities, Vientiane Municipality and Saravane Province, along the Mekong River, Laos. To obtain adult flukes, 42 people positive for small trematode eggs (Opisthorchis viverrini, heterophyid, or lecithodendriid eggs) were treated with a 20-30 mg kg(-1) single dose of praziquantel and purged. Diarrhoeic stools were then collected from 36 people (18 in each area) and searched for helminth parasites using stereomicroscopes. Faecal examinations revealed positive rates for small trematode eggs of 53.3% and 70.8

Morphological and molecular description of Allocreadium apokryfi sp. n. (Digenea: Allocreadiidae) from native Labeobarbus aeneus (Cyprinidae) in South Africa, including notes on its biology, evolutionary history and an updated key of African Allocreadium.

Adult trematodes of Allocreadium Looss, 1900 (Digenea) infect the intestine of mostly freshwater fishes in Asia, Europe, Africa and the Americas. During routine parasitological surveys in the Vaal River system, adult trematodes were collected from the intestine of smallmouth yellowfish, Labeobarbus aeneus (Burchell). The trematodes were confirmed to represent a member of Allocreadium and did not match any existing taxon. Therefore, they are described as a new species, Allocreadium apokryfi sp. n. The morphology of the new species most closely resembles that of Allocreadium aswanense El-Naffar,

Internal parasites of the two subspecies of the West Indian manatee Trichechus manatus.

The West Indian manatee Trichechus manatus is divided into 2 subspecies: the Antillean (T. m. manatus) and Florida (T. m. latirostris) manatees. This study reports sample prevalence of manatee parasites from populations of these 2 subspecies in different geographical locations. Although necropsy is a valuable diagnostic tool for parasite infections, the need for antemortem diagnostic techniques is important. Fecal samples collected during necropsies of Antillean manatees (n = 3) in Puerto Rico and Florida manatees (n = 10) in Crystal River, Florida, as well as from live-captured Florida manate

Taken to the limit--Is desiccation stress causing precocious encystment of trematode parasites in snails?

When hosts experience environmental stress, the quantity and quality of resources they provide for parasites may be diminished, and host longevity may be decreased. Under stress, parasites may adopt alternative strategies to avoid fitness reductions. Trematode parasites typically have complex life cycles, involving asexual reproduction in a gastropod first intermediate host. A rare phenomenon, briefly mentioned in the literature, and termed 'precocious encystment' involves the next stage in the parasites' life cycle (metacercarial cyst) forming within the preceding stage (redia), while still i

Intra- and interspecific competition among helminth parasites: effects on Coitocaecum parvum life history strategy, size and fecundity.

Larval helminths often share intermediate hosts with other individuals of the same or different species. Competition for resources and/or conflicts over transmission routes are likely to influence both the association patterns between species and the life history strategies of each individual. Parasites sharing common intermediate hosts may have evolved ways to avoid or associate with other species depending on their definitive host. If not, individual parasites could develop alternative life history strategies in response to association with particular species. Three sympatric species of helm

Epizootic of Clinostomum marginatum (Trematoda: Clinostomidae) in Ambystoma tigrinum from Colorado, USA: Investigation through Genomics, Histopathology, and Noninvasive Imagery.

Trematodes in the genus Clinostomum develop into large metacercariae that can sometimes achieve high intensity in their second intermediate hosts, potentially causing pathology. In 2022, there was 100% (15/15) infection prevalence of Clinostomum marginatum, with a mean of 3,125 metacercariae per salamander (range: 279-4,075) and a median of 2,949. Dissection and histopathology results indicated that C. marginatum was found in nearly all body tissues and organs of the salamanders. Parasitic infection was closely associated with chronic inflammation and fibrosis around the cysts, with heavily in

Re-evaluation of the taxonomic status of taxa recognized within the expanded concept of Sphincteristomum Oshmarin, Mamaev & Parukhin, 1961 and the related Lobatotrema Manter, 1963 (Digenea: Megaperidae).

The taxonomic status of Sphincteristomum Oshmarin, Mamaev & Parukhin, 1961 (sensu lato) and Lobatotrema Manter, 1963 is controversial due to overlap/confusion in distinctive diagnostic characteristics for each genus and morphological/allometric ambiguity among some of their representatives and/or within records of the same species. To address these in-depth, morphological descriptions, molecular characterizations, and species delimitation analyses were conducted using a combination of comparative morphology, molecular phylogeny, multivariate analyses, and host-parasite data. Following a compre

l-fucoside localization in the gills of the genus Takifugu and its possible implication in the parasitism of Heterobothrium okamotoi (Monogenea: Diclidophoridae).

BACKGROUND: The monogenean parasite Heterobothrium okamotoi only parasitizes the gills of Takifugu rubripes. In this study, we hypothesized that the carbohydrates contribute to high host specificity of H. okamotoi. METHODS: T. rubripes, T. niphobles, T. snyderi, and T. pardalis were used for UEA I staining of the gills and an in vivo challenge test against H. okamotoi. To examine the effect of l-fucose, an in vitro detachment test was conducted using the host's gills. Additionally, fucosylated proteins were isolated from the membrane proteins of T. niphobles gills. RESULTS: The location of l

Saccocoelioides kirchneri n. sp. (Digenea: Haploporidae) from the killifish Cnesterodon decemmaculatus (Cyprinodontiformes: Poeciliidae) from Argentina, morphological and molecular description.

This paper presents a new haploporid digenean that expands the number of species of Saccoccoelioides to 27. The new species, Saccocoelioides kirchneri n. sp. was collected from the intestine of Cnesterodon decemmaculatus (Poeciliidae: Cyprinodontiformes) from Lago del Bosque, La Plata, Argentina. The new species possesses the diagnostic features for Saccocoelioides: a sac like ceca; the vitellarium confined in two irregular groups of follicles distributed between the ventral sucker and the anterior margin of the testis; and a uterus confined largely in the hind-body, but encroaching into the r

Desmogonius baldassinae n. sp. (Digenea: Pronocephalidae) collected in a green sea turtle-Chelonia mydas-from Brazil.

The genus Desmogonius (Digenea: Pronocephalidae) is known only from sea turtles and currently contains two species: D. desmogonius Stephens, 1911 and D. loossi Chattopadhyaya, 1972. The present study describes a third species, Desmogonius baldassinae n. sp. found in a juvenile green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas) from Brazil. The new species is larger than its congeners in all dimensions, with vitellinic fields ending posterior to the ovary. In addition, we present a key for species identification and an emended diagnosis of the genus Desmogonius.
