Afferent connections of the cerebellum in various types of reptiles.

The origin of cerebellar afferents was studied in various types of reptiles, viz., the turtles Pseudemys scripta elegans and Testudo hermanni, the lizard Varanus exanthematicus, and the snake Python regius, with retrograde tracers (the enzyme horseradish peroxidase and the fluorescent tracer "Fast Blue"). Projections to the cerebellum were demonstrated from the nucleus of the basal optic root, the interstitial nucleus of the fasciculus longitudinalis medialis, the vestibular ganglion, and the vestibular nuclear complex, two somatosensory nuclei, viz., the descending nucleus of the trigeminal n

Aβ Accumulation in Vmo Contributes to Masticatory Dysfunction in 5XFAD Mice.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) shows various symptoms that reflect cognitive impairment and loss of neural circuit integrity. Sensory dysfunctions such as olfactory and ocular pathology are also observed and used as indicators for early detection of AD. Although mastication is suggested to correlate with AD progression, changes in the masticatory system have yet to be established in transgenic animal models of AD. In the present study, we have assessed pathologic hallmarks of AD with the masticatory behavior of 5XFAD mice. We found that masticatory efficiency and maximum biting force were decreased

Unusual Intracerebral Presentation of a Myxoid Neurofibroma.

BACKGROUND: Neurofibromas are benign nerve sheath tumors that usually affect peripheral nerves and are related to neurofibromatosis type 1; however, they have not been described as a cause of intraparenchymal brain tumor. CASE DESCRIPTION: We report a case of intracranial myxoid neurofibroma in a 19-year-old female patient manifested as an intense and progressive cephalea, followed by nausea, vomiting, photophobia, and phonophobia. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging showed an extant, expansive left frontoparietal parafalcine/parasagittal tumor. Histopathologic examination dete

The expression and localization of Prune2 mRNA in the central nervous system.

A family of Bcl-2/adenovirus E1B 19kDa-interacting proteins (BNIPs) plays critical roles in several cellular processes such as cellular transformation, apoptosis, neuronal differentiation, and synaptic function, which are mediated by the BNIP2 and Cdc42GAP homology (BCH) domain. Prune homolog 2 (Drosophila) (PRUNE2) and its isoforms -C9orf65, BCH motif-containing molecule at the carboxyl terminal region 1 (BMCC1), and BNIP2 Extra Long (BNIPXL) - have been shown to be a susceptibility gene for Alzheimer's disease, a biomarker for leiomyosarcomas, a proapoptotic protein in neuronal cells, and an

[Aldehyde dehydrogenase activity in rat cerebral structures].

By means of the quantitative histochemical method aldehyde dehydrogenase (AldDG; acidic phosphatase 1.2.1.3.) activity has been studied in neuronal structures of all parts of the rat CNS. The greatest activity has been revealed in cytoplasm of receptor (nucleus of the mesencephalic tract trigeminal nerve-1,100 stipulated units) and effector (all motor nuclei of the trunk and spinal cord: 500-800 stipulated units) cerebral neurons. In perikaryons and axons of most of the intercalated neurons AldDG activity is not great (200-300 stipulated units). A positive correlation is found between distribu

Interpretation of brainstem auditory evoked potentials: results from intracranial recordings in humans.

The results of recording intracranially from the auditory nerve, lower brainstem nuclei, and the inferior colliculus in more than 40 patients operated upon for hemifacial spasm and trigeminal neuralgia are presented. Recordings from the auditory nerve have shown that the auditory nerve is the neural generator of the first two peaks in the human ABR. Recordings from the entrance of the eighth nerve into the brainstem and locations close to that reveal potentials; the latencies of the peaks in these potentials match those of peaks III and IV. These peaks are therefore assumed to have their sourc

Fos expression in the trigeminocervical complex of the cat after stimulation of the superior sagittal sinus is reduced by L-NAME.

Primary neurovascular headaches, such as migraine and cluster headache probably involve activation of trigeminovascular pain structures projecting to the trigeminocervical complex of neurons in the caudal brain stem and upper cervical spinal cord. It has recently been demonstrated that blockade of the synthesis of nitric oxide (NO) by an NO synthesis inhibitor can abort acute migraine attacks and thus it is of interest to determine whether there is an influence of NO generation on trigeminocervical neurons. Cats were anaesthetised with alpha-chloralose (60 mg/kg, i.t.). supplemental 20 mg/kg,

Effects of neonatal whisker lesions on mouse central trigeminal pathways.

The mystacial vibrissae or whiskers on the face have a large representation in the rodent central nervous system. In rats and mice the projections arising from each vibrissa can be demonstrated histologically in five separate parts of the central trigeminal pathway. At every location, the pattern of the projections is isomorphic to the pattern of the facial vibrissae. For example, in the somatosensory cortex (SmI), multicellular cytoarchitectonic units in layer IV--termed barrels--correspond anatomically and functionally to the contralateral whiskers. The cortical barrels are absent at birth a

"Limbic predilection in Alzheimer dementia: is reactivated herpesvirus involved?".

In the brains of patients with senile dementia of the Alzheimer type (SDAT), the quantitatively pathognomonic neuronal lesions (tangles, plaques, granulovacuolar degeneration, Hirano bodies, and nerve cell loss) are predisposed to occur especially within the limbic system. Anatomical and physiological studies indicate that fibres from the trigeminal ganglia innervate meninges and vessels within the middle and anterior cranial fossae, especially in the same subfrontal and mesial temporal regions preferentially afflicted in acute herpes encephalitis. These limbic regions are critical for normal

Hemifacial spasm associated with other cranial nerve syndromes: Literature review.

Hyperactive dysfunction may affect all cranial nerves in the posterior fossa. According to literature review and personal experience, hemifacial spasm was found to be associated not only with the most frequent cranial nerve syndromes, namely: trigeminal neuralgia, vago-glossopharyngeal neuralgia or VIIIth nerve disturbances manifested by vertigo, tinnitus, hearing decrease, but also with rarer syndromes like geniculate neuralgia, masticatory spasm etc. Also, a number of publications have pointed out the relatively high incidence of the coexistence of hemifacial spasm and systemic blood hyperte

The relationship between the stomatognathic system and body posture.

In recent years, many researchers have investigated the various factors that can influence body posture: mood states, anxiety, head and neck positions, oral functions (respiration, swallowing), oculomotor and visual systems, and the inner ear. Recent studies indicate a role for trigeminal afferents on body posture, but this has not yet been demonstrated conclusively. The present study aims to review the papers that have shown a relationship between the stomatognathic system and body posture. These studies suggest that tension in the stomatognathic system can contribute to impaired neural contr

A tale of two neurons in the upper airways: pain versus itch.

Pain and itch sensations are induced by depolarization of distinct populations of unmyelinated type C, and possibly other, neurons. Both sets of neurons and sensations serve critical protective mechanisms that maintain the integrity and patency of the upper airways. When noxious or pruritic stimuli are applied on the afferent nerve ending, pain and itch are appreciated at the thalamic and parietal cortex. In the mucosa, this neuronal depolarization spreads via the peripheral efferent axon response mechanism. Neuropeptides such as substance P and calcitonin gene-related peptide are released fro

[A palate tumor revealed by pain].

A 41-year-old female presented in April 1996 with a tumor of the hard palate revealed by increasing left palate pain. Adenoid cystic carcinoma was suspected on clinical and imaging data. Two limited surgical procedures showed a tumor histologically made of small lobules of granular cells, PAS positive and expressing S100 protein, infiltrating some medullary spaces of the palatine bone, consistent with a granular-cell tumour. Pain recurred in the territory of the maxillary branch of the left trigeminal nerve (V2). Imaging showed a tumor of the origin of V2-extending through the foramen rotondum

Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma associated with skin, muscle and cranial nerve involvement.

The present case, a 75-year-old man with extranodal B-cell lymphoma showed facial hemiplegia, paresthesia and cutaneous manifestations. He was initially diagnosed as having a facial paralysis of unknown etiology. One month after the original diagnosis, erythematous indurated plaques developed on his left cheek and nose. A skin biopsy from the plaque on his cheek showed dense infiltrates of large lymphocytes with irregularly shaped nuclei and prominent nucleoli in the dermis and subcutaneous tissue. The lymphocytes were positive for L26 and CD79a. A diagnosis of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma wa

Domestication and plasticity of brain organization in mallards (Anas platyrhynchos).

The sizes and histological differentiation of structures in the central nervous system of wild and domestic ducks were compared using allometric methods. Whole brain volume is 14.3% less in domestic ducks than in wild birds, and the size of certain brain structures is more variable in domestic ducks than in the wild birds. These findings are consistent with results of studies in other domestic birds and in domestic mammals. Although the brain subdivision volumes are not reduced to the same extent, the relative composition of the brain is maintained in domestic ducks. The overall reduction in r

Trigeminal nerve direct current stimulation causes sustained increase in neural activity in the rat hippocampus.

BACKGROUND: Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a noninvasive neuromodulation method that can modulate many brain functions including learning and memory. Recent evidence suggests that tDCS memory effects may be caused by co-stimulation of scalp nerves such as the trigeminal nerve (TN), and not the electric field in the brain. The TN gives input to brainstem nuclei, including the locus coeruleus that controls noradrenaline release across brain regions, including hippocampus. However, the effects of TN direct current stimulation (TN-DCS) are currently not well understood. HYPOTHE

A trigeminoreticular pathway: implications in pain.

Neurons in the caudalmost ventrolateral medulla (cmVLM) respond to noxious stimulation. We previously have shown most efferent projections from this locus project to areas implicated either in the processing or modulation of pain. Here we show the cmVLM of the rat receives projections from superficial laminae of the medullary dorsal horn (MDH) and has neurons activated with capsaicin injections into the temporalis muscle. Injections of either biotinylated dextran amine (BDA) into the MDH or fluorogold (FG)/fluorescent microbeads into the cmVLM showed projections from lamina I and II of the MDH

Trigeminovascular calcitonin gene-related peptide release and peripheral vascular responses in a mouse model of accelerated aging: Implications for migraine.

OBJECTIVE: Understanding age-related changes in migraine is pivotal, considering the increasing global life expectancy. In addition, both aging and migraine are prominent cardiovascular risk factors. It remains unclear whether calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) release changes with age across trigeminovascular components, and how this relates to peripheral responses to migraine-related vasodilatory molecules. The primary aim was to investigate age-related effects on CGRP release from the trigeminovascular system by studying a mouse model of combined accelerated neuronal and vascular aging,

From cranium to brain: Rethinking tES neuromodulation through the peripheral pathways.

Transcranial electrical stimulation (tES) is traditionally framed as a purely cortical intervention, and weak direct or alternating currents delivered through scalp electrodes are assumed to modulate excitability or entrain oscillations directly under electrodes. However, a growing body of evidence suggests that this transcranial view is incomplete. We synthesized converging human and animal evidence showing that tES also co-stimulates cranial and cervical nerves, especially branches of the trigeminal and greater occipital nerves, which engage deep brainstem neuromodulatory nuclei, such as the

CXCL10 Involvement in Vestibular Migraine via the PI3K/AKT Signaling Pathway.

AIMS: C-X-C motif chemokine ligand 10 (CXCL10) is a member of the CXC chemokine family, known as a classical pain-related chemokine. While CXCL10 is implicated in neuropathic pain, its role in vestibular migraine (VM) remains unclear. METHODS: Serum CXCL10 levels correlated with dizziness and headache severity in VM patients. In the rat VM model, CXCL10, C-X-C motif chemokine receptor 3 (CXCR3), and phosphatidylinositol 4,5-bisphosphate 3-kinase (PI3K)/protein kinase B (AKT) signaling pathway expression were evaluated to explore the potential mechanisms of CXCL10 in VM. RESULTS: Serum CXCL10
