INTRODUCTION: Acute appendicitis is a common surgical emergency, with a prevalence of 112 per 100,000 people per year in Europe. Negative appendicectomy is defined as a pathologically normal appendix removed from patient suspected with appendicitis. Negative appendectomy rate (NAR) has been reported to be around 15-25%. We aimed to evaluate our unit's negative appendectomy rate and the effect of pre-operative imaging on NAR.

It appears that the vast majority of review articles on transfusion deal with complications rather than benefits of this supportive therapy. BACKGROUND: Neoadjuvant therapy is commonly administered to patients with localized disease who have T3-4 esophageal disease as staged by endoscopic ultrasound (EUS). A man interested in active surveillance of low-risk prostate cancer sought a second opinion after having undergone an inappropriate metastatic evaluation that demonstrated multiple enhancing liver masses. Because of his history of splenectomy for trauma, hepatic splenosis was suspected. Despite reassurance, the patient desired biopsy of the masses to confirm splenosis. The imaging features and pathophysiology of hepatic splenosis are presented. The likelihood of finding significant pathology in a hysterectomy specimen undertaken for clinically benign disease is low. Some data indicate that microscopic examination of these specimens may be abandoned. While this approach may seem attractive, the authors believe that there are a number of practical and clinical governance issues associated with this. Instead a pragmatic approach is advocated, with two tissue blocks (cervix and endomyometrium) being adequate in most cases.

AIM: To ascertain whether specific testing for "isolated" anti-52 kDa SSA/Ro antibodies (a-SSA/Ro52) during standard anti-extractable nuclear antigen (ENA) testing is clinically useful.
METHODS: 1438 consecutive sera submitted for anti-ENA testing over 1 year were evaluated for a-SSA/Ro52 using various assays.

A cohort of 973 consecutive attendants at a rhinology clinic was studied prospectively and divided into patients without facial pain (n = 566, 58 per cent) and patients with facial pain (n = 407, 42 per cent). This is the first report of multiple parosteal lipomas as a late complication of aesthetic procedures. A 70-year-old woman presented with multiple frontal nodules that had grown slowly over 5 years. She underwent forehead-lifting surgery 30 years ago and botulinum toxin injection 3 years ago. Computed tomography showed six low-density nodules measuring 10 to 20 mm just above the frontal bone. The tumors were resected via a parietal coronal incision. Histopathological findings revealed parosteal lipoma with foreign bodies.
