Infravesical obstruction (IVO) is an important characteristic of the functional state of male lower urinary tract. It is believed that IVO confirmed by pressure-flow study findings warrants switching from a medical to surgical management of lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS). Intravesical prostatic protrusion (IPP) is a new indicator for detecting IVO secondary to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). This indicator has several advantages over other non-invasive methods for evaluating IVO. The initial findings on the relationship between IPP and IVO suggest the feasibility of its clinical use a

The most common clinical presentation of ureterocele is infection of the urinary tract. Much less common is obstruction of the bladder outlet by prolapse of the ureterocele into the urethra. Even less common is simple occlusion of the bladder outlet by a nonprolapsing ureterocele. We present such a case where a large, simple ureterocele in a young male led to such obstruction.

The pathophysiology of clinical BPH has been attributed to bladder outlet obstruction resulting from the enlarged prostate. A direct relationship does not exist between prostate size, symptom severity, or bladder outlet obstruction. The pathophysiology of prostatism is most likely multifactorial. Elucidating the factors contributing to symptoms will likely provide the foundation for the development of new pharmacological alternatives for the medical treatment of BPH.

We conducted two studies to examine the hypothesis that lower urinary tract obstruction induces excessive production of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) in the bladder in young boys, with consequent overactive bladder (OAB) symptoms. The subjects were boys aged less than 15 years old who were scheduled to undergo surgery in our department from October 2006 to March 2008. In study 1 (n=25), the patients were divided into two groups based on the presence or absence of lower urinary tract obstruction. In study 2 (n=38), the patients were classified by age. The PGE2 level in the bladder was determined by w

Primary localized amyloidosis of the bladder and urethra is a rare condition. Two cases of isolated primary amyloidosis, of the urethra in a man and of the bladder in a woman, are reported. The clinical specificity of the location and the specific therapy are discussed. We draw attention to the extended, palette of diagnostic investigations now available and the new classification made possible by the introduction of immunohistochemistry and immunoelectron microscopy.
