BACKGROUND: Uveal melanoma often metastasizes late and preferentially to the liver, in contrast to cutaneous melanoma. The objective of the current study was to evaluate the histopathologic and immunohistochemical changes in primary uveal melanomas and their corresponding metastases.

Large cells containing prominent, refractile PAS-positive inclusions were found in cytological smears prepared from scrapings of the conjunctiva of an elderly diabetic patient with idiopathic scleritis progressing to scleromalacia perforans. Malignant melanoma can arise from melanocytes in various structures of the eye, orbit, and ocular adnexa. We reviewed the clinical features and long-term results of all subjects with histologically proved melanoma originating from any of the ocular and periocular structures in a tertiary referral center.
