Oral, radiographical, and clinical findings in Weaver syndrome: a case report.

Weaver syndrome is a rare condition characterized by accelerated growth, advanced osseous maturation, and distinct craniofacial features that can occur in both males and females. Etiology is unknown and no definitive oral characteristics have been established. The objective of this case report is to describe the oral and radiographic findings of a 14-year-old male with Weaver syndrome. A comprehensive dental examination was performed under general anesthesia. The clinical findings were: severe generalized heavy plaque with subgingival calculus, gingival edema, malocclusion and maxillary atresi

'A good shepherd, but with obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome': traditional uvulectomy case series and literature review.

BACKGROUND: In the West, removal of the uvula is predominantly undertaken as part of palatal surgery, in cases of obstructive sleep apnoea. In the developing world, such as the Middle East and Africa, uvulectomy is a more common practice. The uvula is removed for curative or preventive purposes, or as part of ritual practice. Due to immigration from developing to developed world countries, and to Western doctors working abroad, such doctors are increasingly being confronted with unfamiliar traditional healing practices, within a medical context. METHODS: The Medline and Embase online database

An animal model of a spontaneously reversible obstructive sleep apnea syndrome in the monkey.

The anatomies of the tongue and uvula in monkeys share many similarities with humans, such that this species has the closest approximation to the human upper airway than any other species. In this study, we investigated the feasibility of using small monkeys as experimental animals for an obstructive sleep apnea model. Monkeys received intradermal injections of liquid collagen in the uvula, tongue, and lateral pharyngeal walls every 2 weeks. Polysomnography was performed bi-monthly in order to control the impact of injections on breathing events, respiratory effort (as measured by esophageal p

Relationship between the pharyngeal airway space and craniofacial morphology, taking into account head posture.

This study assessed the relationship between craniofacial characteristics and the size of the pharyngeal airway space (PAS), taking into account head posture. Sixty dental students 25-30 years of age (30 men and 30 women) were examined by lateral cephalometry. The data were corrected with the use of appropriate regression equations for the PAS. The PAS significantly correlated with hyoid position, maxillary and mandibular size, maxillary and mandibular prognathism, and mandibular inclination. A large, anteriorly positioned mandible was associated with a large PAS-TP (the most proximal distance

Midfacial duplication: a rare malformation sequence.

A child with duplicate maxilla is presented, along with a review of the literature of similar cases. Partial duplications of the maxilla are frequently accompanied by cleft lip and palate, multiple uvulae, hypertelorbitism, and intracranial anomalies with hydrocephalus. Theories of the morphopathogenesis for this malformation sequence are discussed.

Obstructive sleep apnea secondary to surgery for velopharyngeal insufficiency.

The files of 585 patients who had had pharyngeal flap surgery for the correction of velopharyngeal insufficiency were reviewed. Eighteen patients, ranging in age from 6 to 16 years, showed clinical symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome. All of these cases had a polysomnographic evaluation and videonasopharyngoscopy. Fifteen cases met the criteria for the diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome and eventually underwent surgical treatment. A modified uvulopalatopharyngoplasty was done in 14 of the 15 cases. One patient had a prominent uvula flipping into the port of a Jackson's type

Carcinoma of the oropharynx: factors affecting outcome.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: To assess the value of both patient- and tumor-related factors of oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma in predicting patient outcome, with respect to the three primary subsites of the disease. It was hypothesized that the subsite has a significant impact on outcome. STUDY DESIGN: Historical cohort study. METHODS: A chart review was conducted of 126 patients diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma of the oropharynx over a 10-year period. The oropharynx was divided into the following subsites: 1) base of tongue, 2) tonsil and pillars, and 3) uvula, soft palate, and poste

Characterisation of human soft palate muscles with respect to fibre types, myosins and capillary supply.

Four human soft palate muscles, and palatopharyngeus, the uvula, the levator and tensor veli palatini were examined using enzyme-histochemical, immunohistochemical and biochemical methods and compared with human limb and facial muscles. Our results showed that each palate muscle had a distinct morphological identity and that they generally shared more similarities with facial than limb muscles. The palatopharyngeus and uvula muscles contained 2 of the highest proportions of type II fibres ever reported for human muscles. In contrast, the levator and tensor veli palatini muscles contained predo

A qualitative exploration of cultural illness perceptions and barriers to modern healthcare: the case of Ikirimi and traditional uvulectomy in Rwanda.

BACKGROUND: Understanding cultural perceptions of illness is crucial for effective healthcare delivery. This study examines the ethnomedical concept of ikirimi, a culturally recognized illness in Rwanda characterized by perceived uvula abnormalities, and its traditional management through uvulectomy. This study explores the cultural understanding of ikirimi, its perceived causes, symptoms, and treatments, as well as barriers to integrating modern healthcare. METHODS: An exploratory qualitative approach was employed, involving in-depth semi-structured interviews with eight participants: tradit

The effect of pharyngeal structures on the severity of obstructive sleep apnea.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is characterized by complete or partial cessation of breathing during sleep. The tongue is suggested as a possible anatomical site causing airway obstruction. However, the role of other pharyngeal structures in the development of OSA remains unclear. We designed a study using both the apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) and the oxygen saturation measurements to assess the severity of OSA. We aimed to identify critical anatomical structures of the upper airway that correlate with the severity of OSA and to evaluate the utility of magnetic resonance ima

The impact of pretreatment assessment of oropharynx on interstitial soft palate radiofrequency surgery outcome--a multi-center study in patients with habitual snoring.

PURPOSE: Interstitial radiofrequency (RF) surgery of the soft palate (SP) is an established option in the treatment of habitual snoring. The decision-making process in the management of habitual snoring would benefit from diagnostic guidelines for oropharyngeal findings. Our aim was to investigate the correlation of systematic clinical pretreatment oropharyngeal examination scores with the efficacy of interstitial RF surgery of SP in a multi-center study. METHODS: Seventy-four patients (58 (78%) males and 16 (22%) females) with the median age of 42 years (range, 23-64), pre-treatment BMI of 2
