METHODS: Experimental varicocele was induced by partial ligation of the left renal vein in Wistar rat. Apoptosis cells were detected by in situ terminal deoxynucleotityl transferase-mediated dTUP nick end labeling(TUNEL) technique.

Percutaneous retrograde venography was performed in 10 patients with recurrent varicocele after surgical ligation (the Ivanissevich operation) of the spermatic vein. To determine the pros and cons of inguinal and laparoscopic varix ligation techniques, we reviewed 53 patients who underwent inguinal (n = 35) and laparoscopic (n = 18) varicocelectomy at two centers. Laparoscopic ligation of the spermatic veins represents a new approach for the treatment of the idiopathic varicocele. This procedure was performed in 28 consecutive patients. Among 172 examined male patients varicoceles have been found in 57.6% patients. The frequency of varicocele appearance increased according to the fall of sperm concentration. Simple relations between sperm motility and varicocele have not been observed. Larger per cent of pathological sperm forms in patients with varicoceles has been shown. In patients with varicoceles three times as frequent appearance of richer periprostatic and periseminnal blood vessels have been observed in comparison with patients without varicocele.

Proper surgical management of adolescent varicocele is controversial. Recent evidence suggests that the Palomo approach gives the best results. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effect of varicoceles on testicular blood flow in man.
METHODS: Testicular blood flow was measured in 248 consecutive men attending an infertility clinic and 34 fertile volunteers using color duplex ultrasonography.
RESULTS: The testicular blood flow of men with either clinical and/or subclinical varicoceles was not significantly different from controls without varicoceles.
CONCLUSIONS: Varicoceles do not significantly alter testicular blood flow in man.
