Craniofacial morphology in patients with multiple congenitally missing permanent teeth.

The purpose of this study was to examine the association between the number of congenitally missing permanent teeth, excluding third molars, and the craniofacial morphology. The sample comprised 118 children with five or more congenitally missing teeth. Twenty-seven reference points were digitized from lateral cephalometric radiographs and 13 angular measurements of craniofacial morphology were calculated. After an initial analysis, the sample was divided into two subsamples, one with 5-12 missing teeth and the other with 13-21 missing teeth. Within each subsample there was no significant asso

A postero-anterior cephalometric evaluation of adult open bite subjects as related to normals.

Reduced nasal airflow can be the result of enlarged adenoids, hypertrophic turbinates, severely deviated nasal septum, or even narrow nasal cavities. The question of whether the width of the nasal cavity may influence certain facial dimensions examined on the postero-anterior cephalometric X-ray was evaluated through the study of two different groups of subjects. Possible intercorrelations between some other frontal dimensions were also examined in these subjects. The first group consisted of 15 males and 22 females aged from 17 to 25 years diagnosed as having an anterior open bite of at least

Measuring mandibular ridge reduction on oblique cephalometric radiographs.

The aim of this study was to test the accuracy of a setup for measuring alveolar ridge reduction of totally edentulous mandibles and of mandibles with abutment teeth for overdentures, on oblique lateral cephalometric radiographs. For that purpose, a cephalostat was modified so that the patient's head--in particular the mandible--could be fixed in a reproducible manner. Four radiographs were used for measuring all parts of the mandible. To assess the accuracy of the method, two randomly chosen parts of the mandible of 20 patients were X-rayed twice. The radiographs were traced independently by

A critical evaluation of orthopedic interocclusal appliance therapy: design, theory, and overall effectiveness.

Orthopedic interocclusal appliances have been evaluated in a number of research papers and clinical reports over the years. Various theories have been proposed about the method of action of the different appliances, but at present no conclusive controlled testing of these theories has occurred. Certainly, when the potential influence of the nonspecific treatment factors is considered, as well as those cognitive awareness factors common to all appliances, the use of "symptom improvement" as the definitive proof of the need for mandibular realignment or repositioning must be questioned. Specific

Full mouth rehabilitation with fixed teeth supported prosthesis following hobo twin stage technique - A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Worn dentition is a common problem encountered by most people in the last decade. Rehabilitation of a full mouth needs individual attention and proper treatment planning, which is very challenging for partial edentulous cases where bilateral teeth are missing and collapsed vertical dimension leaves inadequate restorative space. Treatment of these cases is complex and needs to apply standard principles while designing and fabricating prostheses. CASE PRESENTATION: A 41-year-old female presented with a history of difficulty in chewing and poor appearance. Examination revealed that t…

The accuracy of two-dimensional planning for routine orthognathic surgery.

Two-dimensional cephalometric planning software should be helpful for prediction of hard tissue outcome after bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy (BSSRO) or bimaxillary osteotomy, but transferring two-dimensional data to three-dimensions (including mock operation and surgery) may result in errors. The objective of this retrospective study was to analyze deviations between predicted results and postoperative outcome using cephalometric analyses, and to evaluate this procedure for daily use. Fifty-four subjects (mean (SD) age 26 (8) years) had a BSSRO (n=21) alone or in combination with Le

Lead molds were constructed from … coefficient increased to roughly 95% when a quadratic variation (curvature) was included along the vertical dimension. If more than the top 5 mm or so of the folds was included (the portion usually corresponding to vibration), a cubic variation along the vertical dimension was necessary to explain a change in concavity at the conus elasticus. These findings suggest …

Comparison of Results of Measurement of Dimensions of the Placed Dental Implants on Cone Beam Computed Tomography with Dimensions of the Producers of the Implants.

INTRODUCTION: One of the most frequently used method for scanning patients with indication for dental implantation in dentistry is cone beam computed tomography. Implantation, CBCT imaging and implant programme are inevitable when planning a successful replacement of lost teeth. CBCT offers exact information about available bone and its density, adjacent tooth roots, the place of mandibular canal and maxillary sinus and adjacent anatomical structure. AIM: The goal of this study is to estimate accuracy of measurements on CBCT images ofpatients who have implants of different producers and deter

Anthropometric Study of the Radiocapitellar Joint.

PURPOSE: There is scant knowledge about the relationship between the size of the radial head and the size of the capitellum. Also, no data exist comparing the size of the capitellum between the left and the right elbow. METHODS: Eight pairs of elbows and 12 single elbows from fresh-frozen cadavers were obtained for this study. The vertical height and anterior width of the capitellum were measured with digital calipers. Four different measurements were performed at the radial head: longest outer diameter, shortest outer diameter, the long dish diameter, and short dish diameter. The Pearson int

Comparison of the Mandibular Buccal Shelf Bone Thickness in Adolescents and Adults Using Cone Beam Computed Tomography.

Introduction The mandibular buccal shelf is a reliable site for extra-alveolar orthodontic miniscrew placement. The primary stability of temporary anchorage devices depends largely on cortical bone thickness and overall bone morphology. However, age-related variations in buccal shelf bone dimensions have not been fully established, particularly between adolescents and adults with similar growth patterns. The aim of the present study was to evaluate and compare the vertical and horizontal bone thickness of the mandibular buccal shelf in adolescent and adult populations using cone-beam computed

Conceptual approach to complex rehabilitation of a patient with bulimia nervosa: a case report.

This case report presents the clinical and technical protocol involved in treating a 32-year-old patient whose teeth and dental appearance were severely compromised as a result of bulimia nervosa. Patients suffering from this disorder have a high incidence of erosion of dentin and enamel, which over time may cause loss of vertical dimension. This has an impact on the patient's overall appearance, with effects such as sunken lips, lack of support, and creases at the corners of the mouth.
