BACKGROUND: Lower-extremity pathologic abnormalities have been common in military recruits for many years. Many of these conditions can become chronic and persist even after retiring from military service. We hypothesized that certain foot abnormalities are more prevalent in veterans versus nonveterans. Persons with opiate use disorders, especially veterans, have a number of both chronic and acute indicators of risk for suicide, but are not typically screened for suicidal ideation on a routine basis, beyond initial evaluations. Medication-induced sexual dysfunction can significantly interfere with patients' quality of life and lead to poor compliance. This retrospective study examined the records of 100 male veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) selected in alphabetical order from an active treatment file of 230 patients. This study examined changes on the Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory for 45 Vietnam veterans who completed a specialized inpatient treatment program. The average length of stay for these veterans was 140 days. Patients' scores on the Millon decreased on 12 of the 20 scales and increased on 8, and their Posttraumatic Stress Disorder-related symptoms of anxiety and dysthymia decreased significantly. Posttraumatic Stress Disorder-related character styles, schizoid, avoidant, and passive-aggressive, also showed significant decreases.

The Veterans Administration Library Network (VALNET) needed an automated library system that could interface with the agency's national automation activities. The Library Special Interest Users Group was established to oversee the selection of appropriate automated systems. The Massachusetts General Hospital Utility Multi-Programming System (MUMPS) computer language and VA FILEMAN, a database management system, are being used to create new library software, which will be in the public domain.

In 1979 a program called Operation Outreach began to provide comprehensive and integrated psychosocial services to Vietnam veterans. The 136 vet centers, housed in storefronts and other nongovernment buildings, are staffed by Vietnam veterans and others knowledgeable about the horrors of that war; many of them are not mental health professionals.
