Do aposematism and Batesian mimicry require bright colours? A test, using European viper markings.

Predator avoidance of noxious prey, aposematism and defensive mimicry are normally associated with bright, contrasting patterns and colours. However, noxious prey may be unable to evolve conspicuous coloration because of other selective constraints, such as the need to be inconspicuous to their own prey or to specialist predators. Many venomous snakes, particularly most vipers, display patterns that are apparently cryptic, but nevertheless highly characteristic, and appear to be mimicked by other, non-venomous snakes. However, predator avoidance of viper patterns has never been demonstrated ex

Preliminary evaluation of Vipera palaestinae snake bite treatment in accordance to the severity of the clinical syndrome.

The intravenous administration of a 60 ml dose of Vipera palaestinae antivenin was the suggested standard treatment of every bitten patient. In this study 85 Vipera palaestinae bitten patients where selectively treated with antivenin depending on the severity of the clinical picture. Patients who developed systemic or severe local signs received 20 ml of antivenin over 30 min. If symptoms were still present, an additional 10 ml of antivenin was given until systemic signs subsided. Repeated doses of 10 ml of antivenin was administered in each case of systemic symptom relapse. 49% of patients di

Inhibition of toxic activities of Bothrops asper venom and other crotalid snake venoms by a novel neutralizing mixture.

The majority of snake bites in Central America are caused by Bothrops asper, whose venom induce complex local effects such as myonecrosis, edema and especially hemorrhage. These effects are only partially neutralized by the clinically used antivenom, even when administered rapidly after envenomation. Recently we screened 49 substances for antihemorrhagic activity and found that a mixture composed of CaNa2, EDTA, a B. asper serum fraction (natural antidote), and the currently used horse polyvalent antiserum is highly effective in the neutralization of local and systemic hemorrhage developing af

Snake bite by Cerastes vipera in children: report of two cases.

Two children, ages 2 and 4 years, envenomed by the snake Cerastes vipera are presented. Both children suffered from local pain and swelling of the hand that spread up to the shoulder in the 2-year-old and up to the elbow in the 4-year-old. A hemorrhagic blister was noted on the bitten finger in the younger patient. Urinary retention, tachycardia, and a slight prolongation of prothrombin time was noted in the 2-year-old, whereas hypertension and fever were observed in the 4-year-old. In both cases, the swelling receded gradually and the patients were discharged from the hospital after several d

Electroencephalographic abnormalities in patients with snake bites.

Electroencephalograms (EEGs) were obtained for 26 patients with snake bite to observe the cerebral impact of snake venom. All snakes were identified; 19 (73%) were Russell's vipers, one (4%) was a common cobra, five (19%) were hump-nosed vipers, and one (4%) was a dog-faced fresh water snake. The EEG was abnormal in 25 patients (96%) and these results included all the snake species identified. The EEG abnormalities observed were reduced alpha activity, increased theta/beta activity or sharp waves (grade 1), sharp waves or spikes and slow waves (grade 2), or diffuse delta activity (grade 3). Severe venom-induced consumption coagulopathy, snakebite-associated thrombotic microangiopathy, and local necrosis following Western bush viper (Atheris chlorechis) envenoming in France.

BACKGROUND: Atheris spp. are small African vipers whose bites are rarely reported but can result in significant envenoming. There is no specific antivenom available. We describe a case of systemic A. chlorechis envenoming presenting with venom-induced consumption coagulopathy (VICC), snakebite-associated thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA), and local necrosis. CASE PRESENTATION: A 33-year-old man was bitten on the index finger by a captive A. chlorechis. Within 6 hours, early laboratory abnormalities progressed to VICC with markedly prolonged PT/aPTT, undetectable fibrinogen, elevated fibrin mon

Decreased snake venom metalloproteinase effects via inhibition of enzyme and modification of fibrinogen.

Since the introduction of antivenom administration 120 years ago to treat venomous snake bit, it has been the gold standard for saving life and limb. However, this therapeutic approach is not always effective and not without potential life-threatening side effects. We tested a new paradigm to abrogate the plasmatic anticoagulant effects of fibrinogenolytic snake venom metalloproteinases by modification of fibrinogen with iron and carbon monoxide and by inhibiting these Zn(2+) dependent metalloproteinases directly with carbon monoxide exposure. Assessment of the fibrinogenolytic effects of veno

The effect of physiological levels of South African puff adder (Bitis arietans) snake venom on blood cells: an in vitro model.

A significant burden of illness is caused globally by snakebites particularly by the puff adder, Bitis arietans. Presently there is no reliable and rapid method to confirm envenomation on blood chemistry; although coagulation parameters like prothrombin time, partial thromboplastin time, international normalized ratio and also serum electrolytes are tested. Here, we found that direct in vitro exposure of physiological relevant whole venom levels to human healthy blood (N = 32), caused significant physiological changes to platelet activity using a hematology analyzer, and measuring occlusion ti

European viper envenomation recorded by French poison control centers: A clinical assessment and management study.

INTRODUCTION: Immunotherapy is the gold standard treatment for patients bitten by European vipers in France; it significantly decreases morbidity, frequency and severity of complications and length of stay. A national prospective study was performed by all Poison Control Centers (PCC) to validate the emergency protocol for viper envenomations. METHODS: This prospective study included all cases of viper bites in France, treated or not with Viperfav(®) in 2013. RESULTS: In 2013, 277 cases of viper bites were collected: ratio M/F 2.1; mean aged 43 years (<15 years 25% 15-65 63% > 65 12%). The f

Sulfated Galactan from Palisada flagellifera Inhibits Toxic Effects of Lachesis muta Snake Venom.

In Brazil, snakebites are a public health problem and accidents caused by Lachesis muta have the highest mortality index. Envenomation by L. muta is characterized by systemic (hypotension, bleeding and renal failure) and local effects (necrosis, pain and edema). The treatment to reverse the evolution of all the toxic effects is performed by injection of antivenom. However, such therapy does not effectively neutralize tissue damage or any other local effect, since in most cases victims delay seeking appropriate medical care. In this way, alternative therapies are in demand, and molecules from n

Fibrin(ogen)olytic and platelet modulating activity of a novel protease from the Echis multisquamatis snake venom.

The variety of enzymes including serine proteases that possess fibrin(ogen)olytic and platelet modulating activity have been discovered in different snake venoms. In our work the fibrin(ogen)olytic and platelet modulating activity of a new protease from Echis multisquamatis snake venom was studied. It was shown that purified enzyme cleaved the ВβR42-A43 bond of fibrinogen during first contact with the substrate following much slower hydrolysis of C-terminus of fibrinogen Aα-chain. Protease hydrolysed fibrin clot too, but at much slower rate and cleaved both C-terminus of Aα-chain and ВβR42-A43

Rediscovery of severe saw-scaled viper (Echis sochureki) envenoming in the Thar desert region of Rajasthan, India.

OBJECTIVES: In India, venomous snakebite remains an enigma. Although ineffective first aid treatments that are centuries old continue to be used by people bitten by snakes, important factual information, such as the importance and uniqueness of bites by the northern saw-scaled viper (Echis sochureki), has been largely lost and forgotten. In this paper, we report the first systematically gathered data on the clinical course of envenoming by E sochureki in Rajasthan, India. Clinical information is reported on 12 victims bitten by definitively identified E sochureki, and 2 clinical cases are desc

Influence of phospholipases A2 from snake venoms on survival and neurite outgrowth in pheochromocytoma cell line PC12.

To determine whether the ability to induce neurite outgrowth in rat pheochromocytoma cell line PC12 is characteristic of phospholipases of different types, we have studied the influence of phospholipase A(2) (PLA2) from cobra Naja kaouthia venom and two PLA2s from viper Vipera nikolskii venom on PC12 cells. Phospholipases from the viper venom are heterodimers in which only one of the subunits is enzymatically active, while PLA2 from the cobra venom is a monomer. It was found that all three PLA2s induce neurite outgrowth in PC12. The PLA2 from cobra venom exhibits this effect at higher concentr

Effects of three novel metalloproteinases from the venom of the West African saw-scaled viper, Echis ocellatus on blood coagulation and platelets.

Two metalloproteinases, a 24-kDa P-I EoVMP1 and a 56-kDa P-III EoVMP2, have recently been isolated from the venom of the West African saw-scaled viper Echis ocellatus. We now reveal a new 65-kDa haemorrhagic group P-III metalloproteinase which we have designated EoVMP3. The aim of this study was to determine whether these three snake venom metalloproteinases (SVMPs) affect platelets and blood coagulation. EoVMP1 had no effect on the aggregation of washed human platelets, whereas EoVMP2 inhibited collagen-induced platelet aggregation. In contrast, EoVMP3 did not inhibit the aggregation of plate

Immediate active movement following Bitis arietans or Naja mossambica venom injection diminishes or prevents necrosis in mice.

Tourniquet use, which localises necrotising snake venom to the bite site, is suspected to exacerbate local necrosis. In view of this, the effect of immediate active movement on the outcome of necrotising snake venom injection was investigated in mice. A minimal macroscopic necrotic dose of Bitis arietans venom (2.5 microg) was administered subcutaneously into the dorsum of the right hind feet of 40 mice of which 20 were previously anaesthetised. The 20 non-anaesthetised mice swam for 10 min. All mice were euthanased on day 4. A further 40 mice underwent an identical experiment using 20 microg

"Fanged to Peril": Interesting Snake Bite Case Series.

Snakebite is an acute life-threatening medical emergency and is included among the neglected tropical diseases in India. The incidence of snakebite mortality is particularly high in Southeast Asia and India has the highest number of cases of snakebites with a mortality of 35,000 to 50,000 cases per year according to the World Health Organization (WHO) direct estimation. There are three families of venomous snakes in Southeast Asia which mainly include Elapidae, Viperidae, and Colubridae. Snakebite victims show varied clinical presentations ranging from local signs to systemic signs of envenoma…

Bothrops venom-induced hemostasis disorders in the rat: Between Scylla and Charybdis.

Hemostasis impairment represents the most threatening consequence of Viperidae envenoming, notably with Bothrops genus. In the French departments of America, B. atrox envenomation in French Guiana may lead to bleeding while B. lanceolatus envenomation in Martinique to thrombosis. Bleeding related to B. atrox envenomation is attributed to vascular damage mediated by venom metalloproteinases and blood uncoagulable state resulting from thrombocytopenia and consumptive coagulopathy. Thrombosis related to B. lanceolatus envenomation are poorly understood. We aimed to compare the effects of B. atrox…
