The neurocognitive basis of morphological processing in typical and impaired readers.

Morphological awareness, or sensitivity to units of meaning, is an essential component of reading comprehension development. Current neurobi … awareness predicted unique variance in reading comprehension above and beyond demographic factors, vocabulary knowledge, and decoding ability. Neuroimaging analyses further revealed that children with stronger reading comprehension showed greater engagement of brain regions associated with integrating sound and meaning, including left inferior frontal, midd …

Reading and comprehension: phoniatric assessment in students with reading difficulties.

INTRODUCTION: Reading is a highly refined skill that encompasses two main components: decoding graphic symbols and understanding the written message. These aspects generally develop together, but reading comprehension is a much more complex process, sustained not only by the identification of written words and vocabulary but also by language systems, such as syntax and general knowledge. Although there is a well-established technique for performing the phoniatric assessment, there is no common use of tests that assess reading comprehension or the association of this information with other asse…

Phonology and orthography in deaf readers: Evidence from a lateralized ambiguity resolution paradigm.

This study explored differences between the two hemispheres in processing written words among deaf readers. The main hypothesis was that impoverished phonological abilities of deaf readers may lead to atypical patterns of hemispheric involvement. To test this, deaf participants completed a metalinguistic awareness test to evaluate their orthographic and phonological awareness. Additionally, they were asked to read biased or neutral target sentences ending with an ambiguous homograph, with each sentence followed by the request to make a rapid lexical decision on a target word presented either t

Imbalanced word-reading profiles in eighth-graders.

This current study introduced a new method to investigate the prevalence and correlates of significant imbalances in the relative accuracy with which eighth-graders read nonwords (e.g., prauma) and exception words (e.g., vaccine). Substantial proportions of students showed imbalanced word-reading profiles, but these were not strongly tied to differences in reading and spelling achievement. Of the students without reading difficulties, 19% had imbalanced word-reading profiles favoring exception words and 17% had imbalanced word-reading profiles favoring nonwords. Of the poor readers, 39% met th

Associations between early lexical composition and pre-reading skills at 5 years - A longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: At the end of the second year, children's lexical compositions (LexC) differ significantly in terms of variety of lexical categories (nouns, verbs, adjectives, closed-class words). The aim of this study was to investigate whether this variation is associated with acquisition of pre-reading skills (PreRS) at 5;0. AIMS: To study the associations between LexC at 2;0 and PreRS at 5;0 and to examine the possible explaining value of LexC and lexicon size for PreRS. PARTICIPANTS AND METHODS: Participants were 66 healthy, monolingual Finnish speaking children. LexC was measured at 2;0 us

Contribution of morphological awareness to reading fluency of children with and without dyslexia: evidence from a transparent orthography.

The goal of this study was to investigate the contribution of morphological awareness to reading fluency of children with and without dyslex … ading fluency of children with and without dyslexia, after controlling for non-verbal intelligence, vocabulary, and phonological awareness. Among typical readers, results indicated that inflectional, derivational, and compounding morphology had a small but significant effect on word, text, and silent reading fluency in 2nd grade and derivational and inflecti …

A role for action knowledge in visual object identification.

We evaluated the impact of visual similarity and action similarity on visual object identification. We taught participants to associate novel objects with nonword labels and verified that in memory visually similar objects were confused more often than visually dissimilar objects. We then taught participants to associate novel actions with nonword labels and verified that similar actions were confused moreoften th an dissimilaractions. We then paired specific objects with specific actions. Visually similar objects paired with similar actions were confused more often in memory than when these s

Meta-analysis of the nonword reading deficit in specific reading disorder.

A meta-analysis was conducted to investigate whether specific reading disorder (SRD) groups demonstrate a deficit in using phonological recoding strategies. Thirty-four studies were reviewed that had compared the nonword reading performances of SRD groups with reading-level matched (RL) control groups. The average nonword reading difference between groups across the total number of studies was moderate (d = 0.65, N = 2865). Three predictors of the size of group differences in nonword reading ability were identified. Studies that used passage reading tests to match groups for reading level foun

Moving up from the segment: a comment on Aichert and Ziegler's syllable frequency and syllable structure in apraxia of speech, Brain and Language, 88, 148-159, 2004.

In a recent article, explore whether apraxia of speech (AOS) can be explained by disruption of the phonetic plans for high frequency syllables. This approach is a hybrid one, combining the notion of a mental syllabary with an explanation that the impairment in AOS results from reduced access to supra-segmental phonetic plans. In this commentary, we explore Aichert and Ziegler's approach and suggest that in testing a hybrid model it is important to be cautious in identifying implications for the two source models.

HIV terms coverage by a commercial nomenclature.

A formal comparison of physician notes on HIV patients with MEDCIN was carried out. Terms from patient charts were divided into five groups: History, Physical Examination, Symptoms, Diagnosis and Doctor's Orders. Four types of matches were determined: Exact, Lexical, Semantic and No-Match. Across the five groups, exact matches ranged from 12 to 44 percent, lexical matches from 2 to 11 percent, semantic matches from 9 to 21 percent, and no-matches from 29 to 74 percent.

Rapid word identification in pure alexia is lexical but not semantic.

Following the notion that patients with pure alexia have access to two distinct reading strategies-letter-by-letter reading and semantic reading-a training program was devised to facilitate reading via semantics in a patient with pure alexia. Training utilized brief stimulus presentations and required category judgments rather than explicit word identification. The training was successful for trained words, but generalized poorly to untrained words. Additional studies involving oral reading of nouns and of functors also resulted in improved reading of trained words. Pseudowords could not be tr

The present research represents the final 2 years of a 5-year longitudinal investigation of (a) confrontation-based, word-retrieval deficits in dyslexic children; (b) the role of vocabulary development in these deficits; (c) the relationship between confrontation naming performance and three carefully defined aspects of reading performance in the general population and in eight dyslexic case studies; and (d) the possible specificity of word-retrieval deficits in dyslexia. Results indicate enduring problems in word-retrieval processes for dyslexic children across the primary grades and into mid…

Standardizing Data Elements for Implementation of ICU Liberation Bundle.

Getting patients out of intensive care units (ICUs) is a major goal for acute care clinicians, as prolonged stays increase the risk of complications and strain critical resources such as staff, equipment, and beds. The ICU Liberation Bundle, or the ABCDEF (A-F) care bundle, is an evidence-based framework for improving outcomes in critically ill patients by addressing pain, sedation, delirium, mobility, and family engagement. However, variability in documentation and a lack of standardized data elements hinder effective implementation and evaluation of adherence to bundle components. This study

A randomized controlled trial to test efficacy of digital enhancements of storybooks in support of narrative comprehension and word learning.

Experiments with film-like story presentations have been found to be beneficial in supporting children's story comprehension and word learni … of 2 or 3 children. Story comprehension, not word learning, benefited from visual enhancements in digital books. Music and background sounds did not stimulate story comprehension and even had a negative effect on receptive vocabulary. To expl …

A comparison of three therapy methods for children with different types of developmental phonological disorder.

Treatment case studies of three children whose speech was characterized by non-developmental errors are described. Three therapy methods were trialed with each child: phonological contrast; core vocabulary and PROMPT. The accuracy and intelligibility of the children's connected speech improved throughout the course of the programme. Intervention that focused on teaching a rule about the contrastive use of phonemes was most successful for a child who consistently made non-developmental errors. Children making inconsistent errors received most benefit from the core vocabulary approach that marke…
