Laryngeal pacing in unilateral vocal cord paralysis. An experimental study.

In an attempt to remobilize a unilaterally paralyzed vocal cord, experiments were made in five adult dogs. Adduction of the paralyzed vocal cord for phonation in synchrony with the intact cord was achieved by electrical stimulation of the adductor muscles that was triggered by the signals from the cricothyroid muscle. The difference in the level of action potentials of the cricothyroid muscle between during phonation and during respiration was used for setting the threshold so as to differentiate phonation from respiration. Nearly synchronous movement of the two vocal cords thereby attained du

Acoustic repertoire and vocal activity of three juvenile female cerrado red-nosed mice, Wiedomys cerradensis (Rodentia: Cricetidae).

We describe and classify the vocal repertoire of three juvenile female Wiedomys cerradensis from 144 h of continuous recordings. We identified 42 260 calls, categorized into six distinct vocalization types: quaver, flat, varied, sustained, sweep, and scream. A supervised Random Forest algorithm mathematically validated these classifications with high accuracy (98.12%; Kappa = 0.96), identifying frequency modulation and spectral structure as the most informative parameters for discrimination. Preliminary analysis revealed daily activity peaks across the 24 h cycle. This preliminary study charac

[Behavioral Features and Neural Basis of Vocal Communication in Mice].

Mice use ultrasonic vocalizations beyond the range of human hearing to achieve social communication. This review summarizes the behavioral features of mouse ultrasonic vocalizations, including pup calls, male courtship vocalizations, and vocalizations emitted during female-female and male-male interactions. It also compares mouse vocalizations with rat ultrasonic calls and bird songs. Finally, this review discusses male courtship vocalizations as an index of sexual motivation and emotional expression, and outlines their neuroendocrine regulation through sex hormones and neural circuits centere

A deep learning pipeline for age prediction from vocalisations of the domestic feline.

Accurate age estimation is essential for advancing interspecies communication but remains a challenge across non-human species. This study presents the first dataset of domestic feline vocalisations specifically designed for age prediction and introduces a novel deep learning pipeline for this purpose. By applying transfer learning with models like VGGish, YAMNet, and Perch, we demonstrate the potential for automated age classification, with VGGish achieving the best results. Our findings hold significant potential for applications in veterinary care and wildlife conservation, building on exis

Aerodynamics and motor control of ultrasonic vocalizations for social communication in mice and rats.

BACKGROUND: Rodent ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs) are crucial to their social communication and a widely used translational tool for linking gene mutations to behavior. To maximize the causal interpretation of experimental treatments, we need to understand how neural control affects USV production. However, both the aerodynamics of USV production and its neural control remain poorly understood. RESULTS: Here, we test three intralaryngeal whistle mechanisms-the wall and alar edge impingement, and shallow cavity tone-by combining in vitro larynx physiology and individual-based 3D airway recons

Evidence of stereotyped contact call use in narwhal (Monodon monoceros) mother-calf communication.

Narwhals (Monodon monoceros) are gregarious toothed whales that strictly reside in the high Arctic. They produce a broad range of signal types; however, studies of narwhal vocalizations have been mostly descriptive of the sounds available in the species' overall repertoire. Little is known regarding the functions of highly stereotyped mixed calls (i.e., biphonations with both sound elements produced simultaneously), although preliminary evidence has suggested that such vocalizations are individually distinctive and function as contact calls. Here we provide evidence that supports this notion i

A comparative characterization of laryngeal anatomy in the singing mouse.

Sexual displays are some of the most dramatic and varied behaviors that have been documented. The elaboration of such behaviors often relies on the modification of existing morphology. To understand how display elaboration arises, we analyzed the laryngeal anatomy of three species of mice that vary in the presence and complexity of their vocal displays. Mice and rats have a specialized larynx that enables them to produce both low-frequency "audible" sounds, perhaps using vocal fold vibration, as well as distinct mechanisms that are thought to enable higher frequency sounds, such as vocal membr

Group living facilitates the evolution of duets in barbets.

The duets of birds have intrigued biologists for a long time, yet much remains unknown about the evolution of these striking collective displays. This is partly because previous studies on duet evolution have been biased to songbirds and neglected other bird groups. In songbirds, the absence of migration has been found to predict the occurrence of duetting, indirectlysupporting the idea that duet communication is linked with pair bonding. Here, we used phylogenetic comparative analyses in a sedentary clade of non-songbirds, the barbets (Capitonidae), to reveal new correlates of duet evolution.

New perspectives on the origins of the unique vocal tract of birds.

Birds utilize a unique structure, called a syrinx, for the production of their vocalizations. The origins of the syrinx are not well understood. New work, utilizing first principles-based models, suggests that a key element in selection for the early syrinx might be the position of this vocal structure: although the larynx sits at the cranial end of the airway, the avian syrinx is located at the base of the airway at the split of the trachea to the lungs. This position may make the syrinx intrinsically more efficient, which might have been critical in the origin of this anatomical feature.

Click communication in wild harbour porpoises (Phocoena phocoena).

Social delphinids employ a vocal repertoire of clicks for echolocation and whistles for communication. Conversely, the less social and acoustically cryptic harbour porpoises (Phocoena phocoena) only produce narrow-band high-frequency (NBHF) clicks with properties that appear poorly suited for communication. Nevertheless, these small odontocetes likely mediate social interactions, such as mate choice and mother-calf contact, with sound. Here, we deployed six tags (DTAG3) on wild porpoises in Danish waters for a total of 96 hours to investigate if the patterns and use of stereotyped NBHF click t

Reversal to air-driven sound production revealed by a molecular phylogeny of tongueless frogs, family Pipidae.

BACKGROUND: Evolutionary novelties often appear by conferring completely new functions to pre-existing structures or by innovating the mechanism through which a particular function is performed. Sound production plays a central role in the behavior of frogs, which use their calls to delimit territories and attract mates. Therefore, frogs have evolved complex vocal structures capable of producing a wide variety of advertising sounds. It is generally acknowledged that most frogs call by moving an air column from the lungs through the glottis with the remarkable exception of the family Pipidae, w

Acoustic signals in the sand fly Lutzomyia (Nyssomyia) intermedia (Diptera: Psychodidae).

BACKGROUND: Acoustic signals are part of the courtship of many insects and they often act as species-specific signals that are important in the reproductive isolation of closely related species. Here we report the courtship songs of the sand fly Lutzomyia (Nyssomyia) intermedia, one of the main vectors of cutaneous leishmaniasis in Brazil. FINDINGS: Recordings were performed using insects from three localities from Eastern Brazil: Posse and Jacarepaguá in Rio de Janeiro State and Corte de Pedra in Bahia State. The three areas have remnants of the Brazilian Atlantic forest, they are endemic fo

Acoustic communication in crocodilians: from behaviour to brain.

Crocodilians and birds are the modern representatives of Phylum Archosauria. Although there have been recent advances in our understanding of the phylogeny and ecology of ancient archosaurs like dinosaurs, it still remains a challenge to obtain reliable information about their behaviour. The comparative study of birds and crocodiles represents one approach to this interesting problem. One of their shared behavioural features is the use of acoustic communication, especially in the context of parental care. Although considerable data are available for birds, information concerning crocodilians i

[Cell-type-specific targeting strategies for elucidating neural circuits and pathophysiological mechanisms in the marmoset brain].

As a primate animal model for neuroscience research, the common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus) provides an unprecedented opportunity to gain a better understanding of the human brain function and pathophysiology of neurological and psychiatric disorders, thereby helping in the diagnosis and treatment of those disorders. The marmoset is particularly useful in studying the neural mechanisms underlying social behavior, as their prosocial behavior and visual and vocal communication systems are well-developed. Despite recent advances in biotechnology such as the creation of genetically engineered ma

Development of Excised Larynx.

The larynx is a complex organ which has a role in a variety of functions such as phonation, breathing, and swallowing. To research these functions, it is widely accepted that in vivo studies provide more anatomically and physiologically relevant findings. However, invasive procedures are generally needed to measure variables such a subglottal pressure, vocal fold tension and stiffness, and cricothyroid muscle stretch. Performing studies using excised larynges is a useful technique which makes it possible to not only measure phonation parameters but control them as well. Early studies using exc

Evidence for contact calls in fish: conspecific vocalisations and ambient soundscape influence group cohesion in a nocturnal species.

Soundscapes provide a new tool for the study of fish communities. Bigeyes (Pempheris adspersa) are nocturnal planktivorous reef fish, feed in loose shoals and are soniferous. These vocalisations have been suggested to be contact calls to maintain group cohesion, however direct evidence for this is absent, despite the fact that contact calls are well documented for many other vertebrates, including marine mammals. For fish, direct evidence for group cohesion signals is restricted to the use of visual and hydrodynamic cues. In support of adding vocalisation as a contributing cue, our laboratory

[Mechanisms of action of antidepressants: new data from Escitalopram].

A first improvement in the treatment of depression was achieved in 1970-80 with the development of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI) because these drugs, which are as potent antidepressants as the tricyclics, are devoid of most of the secondary effects of the latter drugs (orthostatic hypotension, weight gain, dry mouth, etc, mainly caused by their capacity to block alpha1-adrenergic, H1 histaminergic and muscarinic receptors). However, SSRI did not solve all the problems inherent to the treatment of depression because (i) approximately 30% of depressed patients do not respond to

Distinct early development trajectories in Nf1± and Tsc2± mouse models of autism.

BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by deficits in social communication and interaction, and repetitive behaviors. Males are three times more likely to be diagnosed with ASD than females, and sex-dependent alterations in behavior and communication have been reported both in clinical and animal research. Animal models are useful for understanding ASD-related manifestations and their associated neurobiological mechanisms. However, even though ASD is diagnosed during childhood, relatively few animal studies have focused on neonatal developmen

Fear of Predators Suppresses Neurogenesis in the Brains of Wild Songbirds.

Fear of predation can lead to behavioral changes indicative of an enduring memory of fear, as acknowledged by both ecologists and biomedical scientists studying post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Enduring memories are often linked to suppressed neurogenesis in laboratory rodents as a potential mechanism to prevent the replacement of existing memories. We used predator vocalizations to assess the enduring effects of fear on neurogenesis in a wild songbird, black-capped chickadees (Poecile atricapillus), quantifying cell proliferation (PCNA immunoreactivity), and immature neurons (doublecort
