Examining the relationships between cognition and auditory hallucinations: A systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: Auditory hallucinations (hearing voices) have been associated with a range of altered cognitive functions, pertaining to signal detection, source-monitoring, memory, inhibition and language processes. Yet, empirical results are inconsistent. Despite this, several theoretical models of auditory hallucinations persist, alongside increasing emphasis on the utility of a multidimensional framework. Thus, clarification of current evidence across the broad scope of proposed mechanisms is warranted. METHOD: A systematic search of the Web of Science, PubMed and Scopus databases was conducte

Inpatient Institutional Care: The Forced Social Environment.

The landscape of mental health recovery is changing; there have been calls for a shift from the clinical expertise being the dominant voice within mental healthcare towards a more personalised and collaborative service that supports those in need of mental healthcare to define what recovery is for the individual. Within this new recovery movement, there has been a recognition of the importance of the social environment in which individuals are situated and the relationship of this to mental health and wellbeing. Included in this is the importance of an individual's role within society and the

Maternal Responsiveness to Gestures in Children With Down Syndrome.

PURPOSE: This study compared gesture use in young children with Down syndrome (DS) and typical development (TD) as well as how mothers respond to child gestures based on child age and diagnosis. METHOD: Twenty-two mother-child dyads with DS and 22 mother-child dyads with TD participated. The child participants were between 22 and 63 months and were matched on chronological age. We coded child gesture use and whether mothers recoded child gestures (i.e., provided a verbal translation) during naturalistic interactions. RESULTS: The children with DS used more gestures than peers with TD. After

Formant frequency estimation of high-pitched vowels using weighted linear prediction.

All-pole modeling is a widely used formant estimation method, but its performance is known to deteriorate for high-pitched voices. In order to address this problem, several all-pole modeling methods robust to fundamental frequency have been proposed. This study compares five such previously known methods and introduces a technique, Weighted Linear Prediction with Attenuated Main Excitation (WLP-AME). WLP-AME utilizes temporally weighted linear prediction (LP) in which the square of the prediction error is multiplied by a given parametric weighting function. The weighting downgrades the contrib

[Dissociations between music and language functions after cerebral resection: A new case of amusia without aphasia].

We present the neuropsychological study of a patient, I.R., who sustained bilateral damage to the temporal lobes and to the right frontal lobe as a result of successive brain surgeries that occurred ten years earlier. The patient is 40 years old and right-handed; she had no special training in music or in language, representing, therefore, the large majority of listeners. Her performance is compared to that of four neurologically intact subjects who are closely matched in terms of education, sex and age. In the present study, we report I.R.'s performance on various tests aiming at assessing he

The robotic PIANO: a critical narrative review of surgeon-controlled operative polyphony, human factors, and robotic training.

Robotic surgery can concentrate control of several technical functions at the console, but such concentration does not itself confer clinical independence, reduce dependence on the perioperative team, or improve patient outcomes. We define surgeon-controlled operative polyphony as the phase-bounded coordination of multiple partially independent technical control streams by one console operator within a distributed perioperative system. This critical narrative review and conceptual synthesis asks which technical functions can be concentrated coherently, where human-factors and team dependencies

Bridging the Gap: A Qualitative Study Exploring the Impact of the Involvement of Researchers With Lived Experience on a Multisite Randomised Control Trial in the National Probation Service in England and Wales.

INTRODUCTION: Methodological and ethical arguments support the involvement of individuals with lived experience in research to reduce engagement barriers and ensure those directly affected by studies contribute to knowledge generation. However, there is limited evidence on the impact of including researchers with lived experience of serving a prison or community sentence in clinical trials. This qualitative study aimed to explore the value of involving researchers with lived experience of the criminal justice system as data collectors in the Mentalization for Offending Adult Males (MOAM), a mu

Linguistic, Content and Face Validity of the Swedish Version of a Quality-of-Life Assessment for Children, Teenagers and Adults with Spina Bifida.

Spina bifida includes a spectrum of different neural tube defects. Myelomeningocele is the most serious type and is associated with a risk of paralysis and sensory dysfunction below the affected level, bladder/bowel dysfunction, brain dysmorphology, and impaired health-related quality of life (HRQoL). The aim of this study was to describe the establishment of linguistic, content and face validity of the Swedish version of a Quality-of-Life Assessment for children (QUALAS-C, n = 10 items), teenagers (QUALAS-T, n = 10 items) and adults with spina bifida (QUALAS-A, n = 15 items) based on the orig

Undergraduate medical education for neurodivergent students: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Recognition of the importance of the neurodiversity paradigm is growing within medical education, as is understanding of how current practices may create barriers for neurodivergent students. This review aims to explore existing empirical research regarding undergraduate medical education for neurodivergent students, in order to provide practical considerations for educators and inform planning of future research. METHOD: Following frameworks outlined by Arksey and O'Malley and the PRISMA Extension for Scoping Reviews, six electronic databases were searched in April 2024 for empir

Introducing a brain-computer interface to facilitate intraoperative medical imaging control - a feasibility study.

BACKGROUND: Safe and accurate execution of surgeries to date mainly rely on preoperative plans generated based on preoperative imaging. Frequent intraoperative interaction with such patient images during the intervention is needed, which is currently a cumbersome process given that such images are generally displayed on peripheral two-dimensional (2D) monitors and controlled through interface devices that are outside the sterile filed. This study proposes a new medical image control concept based on a Brain Computer Interface (BCI) that allows for hands-free and direct image manipulation witho

Early psychotic experiences: Interventions, problems and perspectives.

Psychotic or psychotic-like experiences and symptoms may precede and be indicative of later psychosis emergence. DSM-5 has introduced Attenuated Psychosis Syndrome (APS) as a condition for further study, arguing for its clinical validity and the need for identifying sub- threshold psychotic states. Early psychosis intervention has an already established role in reducing the Duration of Untreated Psychosis (DUP), delaying psychosis onset and relieving Ultra High Risk (UHR) individuals from their presenting symptoms. Pharmacological and mainly psycho-therapeutical approaches are suggested for th

Brain tumor segmentation using neuro-technology enabled intelligence-cascaded U-Net model.

According to experts in neurology, brain tumours pose a serious risk to human health. The clinical identification and treatment of brain tumours rely heavily on accurate segmentation. The varied sizes, forms, and locations of brain tumours make accurate automated segmentation a formidable obstacle in the field of neuroscience. U-Net, with its computational intelligence and concise design, has lately been the go-to model for fixing medical picture segmentation issues. Problems with restricted local receptive fields, lost spatial information, and inadequate contextual information are still plagu

Pediatric Graves' Disease: Surgical Interventions in a Single Institution - A Comprehensive Case Series.

INTRODUCTION: Graves' disease (GD) is the most common cause of hyperthyroidism in children and adolescents. Data regarding pediatric GD in Indonesia are limited and pose challenges to diagnosing and treating the patients. In many aspects the clinical presentation of GD in children and adolescents resembles that of the adult population. There are three treatments for pediatric GD: anti-thyroid drugs, radioiodine ablation, and thyroidectomy. Although surgery is gaining acceptance as the definitive first-line treatment for children with GD, several studies examining pediatric populations have sho

Global report on preterm birth and stillbirth (5 of 7): advocacy barriers and opportunities.

BACKGROUND: Efforts to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) to improve maternal and child health can be accelerated by addressing preterm birth and stillbirth. However, most global health stakeholders are unaware of the inextricable connections of these adverse pregnancy outcomes to maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH). Improved visibility of preterm births and stillbirths will help fuel investments and strengthen commitments in the discovery, development and delivery of low-cost solutions globally. This article addresses potential barriers and opportunities to increasing globa

AI Caretaker: An Intelligent Voice-Activated Support System for Dementia Care.

Introduction Dementia care frequently requires continuous supervision, a demand that becomes difficult to meet when caregivers must balance outside responsibilities, particularly in home-based care, where unsupervised periods expose dementia patients to wandering, missed medication, loneliness, and a multitude of injuries. Existing tools often depend on manual patient input, an unrealistic expectation for individuals with impaired memory and judgment. This study presents the AI Caretaker, a voice-interactive support system that assists patients through natural conversation rather than commands
