Cheerleading is a highly popular youth sport in the United States and has been increasingly recognized in recent years for its athleticism and competitive nature. The sport has changed dramatically since its inception. When the sport of cheerleading was first developed, its primary purpose was to entertain crowds and support other athletes. Today, cheerleaders are competitive athletes themselves. Cheerleaders, most of whom are in the pediatric age group, and their parents commonly approach orthopaedic surgeons and sports medicine physicians with questions regarding the risks associated with pa

Increased lateral trunk bending to the injured side has been observed when ACL injuries occur. The purpose was to quantify the effect of mid-flight lateral trunk bending on center of mass (COM) positions and subsequent landing mechanics during a jump-landing task. Forty-one recreational athletes performed a jump-landing task with or without mid-flight lateral trunk bending. When the left and right trunk bending conditions were compared with the no trunk bending condition, participants moved the COM of the upper body to the bending direction, while the COM of the pelvis, ipsilateral leg, and co

Tendons adapt in response to sports-specific loading, but sometimes develop tendinopathy. If the presence of ultrasound changes like hypoechoic areas and neovascularization in asymptomatic tendons precede (and predict) future tendon problems is unknown. The aim of this prospective cohort study was to investigate the relationship between the development of ultrasound changes in the patellar and quadriceps tendons and symptoms of jumper's knee, as well to examine the medium-term effects of intensive training on tendon thickness among adolescent athletes. Elite junior volleyball athletes were fol

OBJECTIVES: Many athletes with patellar tendinopathy participate in sports with symptoms during or after activities. Current treatments do not decrease pain in-season; eccentric exercises in-season result in an increase in pain. This study examined if isometric and isotonic exercises relieved pain in competing athletes with patellar tendinopathy.
DESIGN: Randomised clinical trial.
METHODS: Jumping athletes with patellar tendinopathy playing at least three times per week participated in this study. Athletes were randomised into an isometric or isotonic exercise group. The exercise programs co

BACKGROUND: Lumbar spondylolysis, a common identifiable cause of low back pain in young athletes, reportedly has a higher incidence rate in males. However, the reason for its higher incidence in males is not clear. This study aimed to investigate the epidemiological differences between the sexes in adolescent patients with lumbar spondylolysis.
METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted in 197 males and 64 females diagnosed with lumbar spondylolysis. These patients visited our institution from April 2014 to March 2020 with their main complaint being low back pain, and they were followed-up

The epidemiology of sports-related concussions (SRCs) and closed head injuries (CHIs) in high school females remains undefined at the national level, especially for unorganized sports and recreational activities. This study examines 1,176,092 national weighted estimates of SRCs or CHIs in female patients 14-18 years of age presenting to United States (US) emergency departments (EDs) between 2000 and 2019 in the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS). The national weighted estimate of female patients in our study increased significantly (p < 0.001) between 2000 (9,835; 95% Confi

Graft failure rates were higher and inferior subjective outcomes were observed after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction in patients with generalized hypermobility. This is a clear and corroborative finding that is highly consilient with other reports of similar studies from the published literature. However, controversy remains regarding other potentially predictive and confounding variables. For example, age, activity level, sex, and dynamic neuromuscular control were not considered in this interesting, important, and potentially impactful study. Dynamic stability of the knee joint is

The aim of this study is to investigate the predictive value of landing stability and technique to gain insight into risk factors for ankle and knee injuries in indoor team sport players. Seventy-five male and female basketball, volleyball or korfball players were screened by measuring landing stability after a single-leg jump landing and landing technique during a repeated counter movement jump by detailed 3-dimensional kinematics and kinetics. During the season 11 acute ankle injuries were reported along with 6 acute and 7 overuse knee injuries by the teams' physical therapist. Logistic regr

OBJECTIVES: We examined the natural groupings of leisure-time physical activities (LTPA) among US adolescents and their correlates.
METHODS: Data came from the 1999-2006 NHANES, restricted to 3865 boys and 3641 girls 12-19 years old. Respondents were asked to report > 40 types of moderate-to-vigorous LTPA in the past month. Latent class analyses were used to identify natural groupings of the top 10 LTPA using the proportion of each activity's metabolic equivalents (METs) to total energy expenditure from all physical activities.
RESULTS: For each gender, 5 natural groupings of LTPA were ident

The purpose of this preliminary investigation was to determine the relative role of the distal lower extremity tissue masses of varsity athletes in predicting distal lower extremity injury sustained during a competitive season. One hundred male and female varsity athletes (basketball, volleyball, soccer, cross country) completed a questionnaire on general health, physiological, and psychosocial variables, during each sport's respective training camp. A series of anthropometric measurements were used as inputs to distal lower extremity tissue mass prediction equations to calculate lean mass, fa

A recurrent challenge in scaling ultra-wideband (UWB) motion-capture systems is interference management when many ranging transactions coexist in time and space. To address this, we study a two-layer localization architecture that separates field-level player localization from local on-body pose tracking, allowing the two tasks to operate with different communication regimes and spatial-reuse policies. A stochastic-geometry framework is used to map sport-dependent parameters, including player density, field size, tag count, anchor count, update rates, and ranging airtime, to reliability and up

The deleterious consequences of mental fatigue (MF) on athletes in diverse sporting domains have been subject to extensive inquiry. However, the efficacy of interventions to counteract the effects of MF remains largely elusive. This review aims to evaluate the effects of counteractive interventions on the sport-specific performance of mentally fatigued athletes. Moreover, synthesizes the current evidence on which sports effectively counter the detrimental effects of MF with interventions, highlighting potential avenues for upcoming research. A systematic search was executed via Web of Science,
