Attentional bias toward negative information in patients with fibromyalgia syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: In addition to central nervous sensitization, affect dysregulation constitutes an important factor in the pathogenesis of fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS). The present study is concerned with emotional influences on information processing in FMS. The hypothesis of attentional bias, i.e., selective processing of negatively connoted stimuli, was tested. METHODS: Twenty-seven female FMS patients and 34 healthy women undertook an emotional modification of the Stroop task. Subjects had to decide whether the colors of positive, negative, and neutral adjectives accorded with color words presen

Developmental language disorder: similarities and differences between 6-year-old mono- and multilingual children.

This study investigated language ability in 6-year-old mono- and multilingual children who, at age 2;6 years, had screened positive for developmental language disorder (DLD). One hundred children (32 girls, 68 boys) were assessed at an average age of 2;9 years (T1) and 85 of them (30 girls, 55 boys) were reassessed at age 6;0 years (T2) using a standardised test battery. Of these, 68 (23 girls, 45 boys) met the criteria for DLD diagnosis; 28 of them were monolingual and 40 multilingual. Language profiles at T2 were analysed, as were the associations between DLD and a mono- or multilingual back

Hippocampal Volume and Episodic Associative Memory Identify Memory Risk in Subjective Cognitive Decline Individuals in the CIMA-Q Cohort, Regardless of Cognitive Reserve Level and APOE4 Status.

BACKGROUND: Subjective cognitive decline (SCD) was proposed to identify older adults who complain about their memory but perform within a normal range on standard neuropsychological tests. Persons with SCD are at increased risk of dementia meaning that some SCD individuals experience subthreshold memory decline due to an underlying progression of Alzheimer's disease (AD). OBJECTIVE: Our main goal was to determine whether hippocampal volume and APOE4, which represent typical AD markers, predict inter-individual differences in memory performance among SCD individuals and can be used to identify

Altered functional connectivity is related to impaired cognition in left unilateral asymptomatic carotid artery stenosis patients.

BACKGROUND: Asymptomatic carotid artery stenosis (aCAS) impairs haemodynamic and cognitive functions; however, the relationship between these changes and brain network connectivity remains largely unknown. This study aimed to determine the relationship between functional connectivity and neurocognition in patients with aCAS. METHODS: We compared functional status in 14 patients with aCAS and 15 healthy controls using resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging sequences. The subjects underwent a full range of neuropsychological tests and a graphical theoretical analysis of their brain

Lowered serum cesium levels in schizophrenia: association with immune-inflammatory biomarkers and cognitive impairments.

OBJECTIVES: A previous study has shown that schizophrenia (SCZ) is accompanied by lowered levels of trace/metal elements, including cesium. However, it is not clear whether changes in cesium, rubidium, and rhenium are associated with activated immune-inflammatory pathways, cognitive impairments, and the symptomatology of SCZ. METHODS: This study measured cesium, rubidium, and rhenium, cognitive impairments (using the Brief Assessment of Cognition in Schizophrenia [BACS]), and the levels of cytokines/chemokines interleukin (IL)-1β, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, and eotaxin (CCL11) in 120 pati

Components of executive function model regional prefrontal volumes.

OBJECTIVE: Designed to measure a diversity of executive functioning (EF) through classical neuropsychological tests, the Delis-Kaplan Executive Function Scale (D-KEFS) allows for the investigation of the neural architecture of EF. We examined how the D-KEFS Tower, Verbal Fluency, Design Fluency, Color-Word Interference, and Trail Making Test tasks related to frontal lobe volumes, quantifying the regional specificity of EF components. METHOD: Adults from the Nathan Kline Institute-Rockland Sample (NKI-RS), an open-access community study of brain development, with complete MRI (3T scanner) and

Cerebrovascular function during cognition in Parkinson's disease: A functional transcranial Doppler sonography study.

OBJECTIVE: Recent evidence has linked cerebrovascular abnormalities with Parkinson's Disease (PD), which may provide a new neurophysiological understanding of cognitive impairment in PD. The current study aimed to compare cerebrovascular functioning, during a cognitive task and at rest, in those with and without PD. METHODS: Idiopathic PD patients (n = 30) and age- and gender-matched healthy controls (n = 30) undertook cognitive testing and completed a word generation task while blood flow velocity was monitored bilaterally with functional transcranial Doppler sonography (fTCD) of the middle

Obese Adolescents Show Reduced Cognitive Processing Speed Compared with Healthy Weight Peers.

BACKGROUND: Childhood obesity and obesity-associated diabetes and metabolic syndrome (MetS) continue to rise. Obesity has been linked to structural and functional brain abnormalities, particularly in the frontal lobe. METHODS: One hundred sixty-two adolescents (aged 19.53 ± 1.53 years) underwent medical, neurocognitive, and brain magnetic resonance imaging assessments. Participants were either healthy weight (BMI <25.0 kg/m2 or BMI percentile <85%) or obese (BMI ≥30.0 kg/m2 or BMI percentile ≥95%). We evaluated frontal lobe cognitive functions and the size of the corpus callosum (CC). RESULT

Diagnostic Utility of Multi-Domain Language Measures Across the Alzheimer Disease Continuum.

OBJECTIVES: Alzheimer's disease (AD) progresses from a cognitively unimpaired stage through mild cognitive impairment (MCI) to dementia. Because language impairment often emerges before dementia, it is a candidate marker of disease stage. Yet the standard batteries of large AD research cohorts rely on a narrow set of tests that mainly evaluate the lexical-semantic domain (i.e., picture naming and verbal fluency), leaving other language domains, such as semantic memory, phonology, morphosyntax, and single-word reading, rarely assessed. We evaluated the diagnostic utility of standard and special

Important considerations in lesion-symptom mapping: Illustrations from studies of word comprehension.

Lesion-symptom mapping is an important method of identifying networks of brain regions critical for functions. However, results might be influenced substantially by the imaging modality and timing of assessment. We tested the hypothesis that brain regions found to be associated with acute language deficits depend on (1) timing of behavioral measurement, (2) imaging sequences utilized to define the "lesion" (structural abnormality only or structural plus perfusion abnormality), and (3) power of the study. We studied 191 individuals with acute left hemisphere stroke with MRI and language testing

EEG based depression detection by machine learning: Does inner or overt speech condition provide better biomarkers when using emotion words as experimental cues?

BACKGROUND: Objective diagnostic approaches need to be tested to enhance the efficacy of depression detection. Non-invasive EEG-based identification represents a promising area. AIMS: The present EEG study addresses two central questions: 1) whether inner or overt speech condition result in higher diagnositc accuracy of depression detection; and 2) does the affective nature of the presented emotion words count in such diagnostic approach. METHODS: A matched case-control sample consisting of 10 depressed subjects and 10 healthy controls was assessed. An EEG headcap containing 64 electrodes me

Electrophysiological Assessment of Semantic Processing of Cochlear Implant Users Using an Audiobook.

Cochlear implants (CI) afford listeners with limited spectral resolution, thereby constraining semantic processing. Prior research has predominantly used isolated words or sentences without context, a method that lacks ecological validity and may place greater demands on working memory (WM) due to the absence of contextual linguistic information. This study examined the semantic processing of experienced CI users (N = 21) and age-matched normal-hearing controls (NH, N = 21) using an audiobook. We measured neuroelectric brain activity while participants listened to a story in which we inserted

Genome-wide association study of word reading: Overlap with risk genes for neurodevelopmental disorders.

Reading disabilities (RD) are the most common neurocognitive disorder, affecting 5% to 17% of children in North America. These children often have comorbid neurodevelopmental/psychiatric disorders, such as attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The genetics of RD and their overlap with other disorders is incompletely understood. To contribute to this, we performed a genome-wide association study (GWAS) for word reading. Then, using summary statistics from neurodevelopmental/psychiatric disorders, we computed polygenic risk scores (PRS) and used them to predict reading ability in our

Cognitive Correlates of Developmental Surface Dyslexia: A Single Case Study.

Recently, there have been several reports of developmental analogues of the specific orthographic processing deficits observed in acquired surface dyslexics (Goulandris & Snow ling, 1991; Hanley, Hastie, & Kay, 1992). How ever, very little has been discovered about w hat basic cognitive deficits might be associated w ith this particular kind of reading disorder. This paper describes the case of MI, a 10-year-old boy w ith a high IQ and no known history of neurological impairment. He demonstrates extremely poor performance for his age and reading level on irregular word reading tasks, but perfo

Latent Semantic Structure of the WMS-III Verbal Paired-Associates.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the factor structure of the verbal paired-associates (VPA) subtest in the WMS-III using a theoretically driven model of semantic processing previously found to be well-fitting for the WMS-IV version of the test. METHOD: Archival data were used from 267 heterogeneous neurosciences patients and 223 seizure disorder patients who completed the WMS-III as part of a standard neuropsychological evaluation. Confirmatory factor analysis was used to test theoretically driven models for VPA based on principles of semantic processing. Four nested models of different complexities

Efficacy of rivastigmine on executive function in patients with Parkinson's disease dementia.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Rivastigmine is approved in the USA for the treatment of mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease dementia (PDD). Executive function (EF) deficits are a core symptom of PDD. The current objective was to investigate the effects of rivastigmine capsules versus placebo on EF in PDD, focusing on secondary outcome measures from a large, international, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, 24-week trial (EXPRESS, CENA713B2311). METHODS: Secondary outcomes included Delis-Kaplan Executive Function System (D-KEFS) measures of EF. Data from three D-

Impairment in recognition memory may be associated with near-term risk for suicide attempt in a high-risk sample.

INTRODUCTION: Prior work has implicated several neurocognitive domains, including memory, in patients with a history of prior suicide attempt. The current study evaluated whether a delayed recognition test could enhance prospective prediction of near-term suicide outcomes in a sample of patients at high-risk for suicide. METHODS: 132 Veterans at high-risk for suicide completed a computer-based recognition memory test including semantically-related and -unrelated words. Outcomes were coded as actual suicide attempt (ASA), other suicide-related event (OtherSE) such as aborted/interrupted attemp

Audiometric Age-Related Hearing Loss and Cognition in the Hispanic Community Health Study.

BACKGROUND: Age-related hearing loss (HL), a common and treatable condition, has been associated with other age-related conditions. Late life cognitive impairment is a major public health concern that is rarely treatable. Studies examining the relationship between HL and cognition have been limited by non-Hispanic cohorts, small samples, or limited confounding control. We overcome these limitations in a large Hispanic cohort. METHODS: This was a multisite cross-sectional study of 5,277 subjects at least 50 years old (Hispanic Community Health Study, HCHS). The main exposure was audiometric HL

What and where in mirror reading.

In a combined voxel-based morphometry and functional magnetic resonance imaging study on the practice of mirror reading, we recently found a shift of activation from right superior parietal to right dorsal occipital cortex and a corresponding increase of gray matter. We interpreted this shift of activation and the corresponding structural changes as a shift from effortful visuospatial transformation to a more direct processing of mirrored words (Ilg et al., 2008). To test this hypothesis, we now analyzed brain activation patterns associated with different aspects of mirror reading. Activation
