This study describes hospitalized injuries among workers in British Columbia lumber industry. Between April 1989 and December 1997, from the hospital records of 5,745 male sawmill workers were analyzed for the present study. Public safety personnel (PSP) are at risk of developing posttraumatic stress injury (PTSI) due to exposure to traumatic experiences and accidents. Rehabilitation programs are available, but their success varies. Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is a rare cancer with a poor prognosis. The disease is of importance, since the incidence in Denmark is increasing despite cessation of the use of asbestos in the 1980s. MPM has a long latency period, and the first symptom is often dyspnoea, typically caused by pleural effusion. The diagnosis is a challenge, because cytology often is non-conclusive, and thoracoscopy is needed to obtain biopsies for immunohistochemistry. The occupational history is important, since the patients are entitled to compensation. The treatment is often limited to palliation.

DESIGN: A self-administered questionnaire was mailed to all of the 160 registered veterinary practices in Western Australia.

A population-based cross-sectional study of occupational injuries among a random sample of 287 migrant farmworkers demonstrated frequent obstacles to health care; 65% (11/17) of the more seriously injured subjects did not receive prompt care or never received care. Subjects not receiving prompt care were twice as likely to have incomplete recovery. Employers covered medical expenses for only 5/13 (38%) of the injured workers, and only 3/15 were compensated for lost work. This study indicates that comprehensive Workers' Compensation coverage is urgently needed in North Carolina.

QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: We examined the effects of a variety of factors, such as age, gender, and socioeconomic status on the management of both carpal and cubital tunnel syndromes.
